Chapter 151: Ch 150: Systemic Allostatic Dysfunction

"Do you expect me to believe such nonsense? You even hesitated there—"

"If you are accusing Kael, then bring proof! He already made a vow with his magic and was declared innocent. Are you willing to stake your life on the line and make one yourself?"

Leon asked, and Cardinal Flux finally dropped the matter.

"Since you are a child and a victim of these circumstances, I will overlook your words this time. As for the Saintess’s choice, why don’t we let her make it again? But to make it fair, let her stay in the temple for a few days to see how she likes it."

It was a fair deal...but also shady as hell.

"No. And this is not up for debate. I will be taking Seraphina back with me."

Kael declared, and he was ready to attack the Cardinal and grab Seraphina when he saw her moving.

Seraphina stood up and walked two steps toward him before she collapsed.

Panic spread across the hall in an instant as everyone looked at their unconscious Saintess. People yelled over each other, wondering what they should do.

Kael immediately looked toward the Cardinal, ready to kill him if he was behind this. But the Cardinal looked as calm as ever.

[Status update...]

[Target Seraphina is not in a critical state.]

[Intervention required: None]

The World Magic told Kael not to interfere, but he was not sure whether it was telling him not to interfere with Seraphina’s condition or the overall situation.

Moreover, did this mean he needed to let Seraphina remain at the temple for now?

"What a headache this is turning out to be. Did she have to become the center of attention any more than she already was?"

Leon muttered as Kael walked past him and toward Seraphina. He grabbed her and pulled her up before checking on her.

He could not feel any traces of magic on her, which reassured him that she was simply unconscious and nothing more.

But the underlying panic was still ever-present.

"You—! Get out of the way. Let the doctor see the patient."

Kael was pushed aside by the Cardinal, and Seraphina was handed over to the doctor, who looked shocked at such rough treatment.

After looking over Seraphina, the doctor only shook his head in regret.

"I am afraid that she is going through Systemic Allostatic Dysfunction. It would be best to let her rest and keep an eye on her for the time being."

The doctor shook his head, and everyone panicked at his words. However, Kael recognized those familiar words instantly.

As a psychiatrist, how could he not know what Systemic Allostatic Dysfunction was?

"Doctor, are you telling me that Seraphina got so stressed that she collapsed?"

Kael asked, and the doctor shrank as soon as he saw all the eyes looking at him.

"T-That’s...I-I don’t know..."

The doctor was not useless, but he might as well have been with how tense he was. Kael did not know whether he felt threatened or was simply being cautious, nor did he care. All he wanted to know was when Seraphina would wake up.

"So, when is she going to wake up?"

Kael asked, and the doctor looked even more nervous.

"T-That...I cannot say right now. Please, forgive me..."

The doctor kept apologizing, causing the Cardinal to step forward and place a hand on the doctor’s shoulder.

"Grand Master Kael, I know that you are upset by the situation. Believe me when I say that I am just as concerned as you are. However, our emotions won’t help the situation. What we need to do now is let Saintess Seraphina rest."

Cardinal Flux gestured for a guard to grab Seraphina and take her to the resting room, and Kael immediately followed.

"Well, it seems like the Saintess has no choice but to remain in the temple’s custody for some more time. Hopefully, this won’t be the last the temple sees of her."

Now the Cardinal was asking Kael to become angry with him.

But Kael could play nice for now. Instead of lashing out, he was going to bottle up all his anger, and once this situation was over, he would unleash it and show the temple what he was capable of.

__________

"What is going on here? My head hurts! And I cannot open my eyes. Am I...asleep?"

Seraphina questioned as she tried to open her eyes and look around, but her body refused to comply. Everything hurt, and she was not even sure if it was possible for her to move.

Moreover, she could sense that she was not the only presence inside her mind.

"Oh! So you decided to wake up after all. Sorry about your body not being available right now. I needed an excuse to remain in the temple, so I decided to knock us out."

Her inner voice explained cheerfully, almost as if that resolved any issue Seraphina was having.

"What do you mean you knocked me out? What did you do to my body?"

Nothing felt wrong, but with her inner self, you could never know.

"Oh, don’t worry! I just did a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Before anyone knew it, you were knocked out. Kael was really worried, and I was sure he would blow the temple apart. Luckily for us, he did not deprive us of our chance at revenge."

Her inner self sounded far too happy with this outcome, but Seraphina did not feel the same.

However, it was nice to know that Kael was worried about her...that was not the point here.

"So, what are you planning? If you are going to use my body, then you might as well keep me updated."

This was not a declaration that she was willing to cooperate, but if she was going to be involved anyway, then she might as well do it on her terms.

"But aren’t we already doing this on your terms? We are both the same person here. Still, you are welcome to sleep through it all. Should I knock you out—"

"There is no need to. Just guide me on what needs to be done. I will take care of the rest."
