Chapter 145: Ch 144: A New Student

Cardinal Flux was busy these past two days with constant letters and meetings. He was happy but also exhausted, which made him cranky, and he complained to his assistant.

"Tsk, they all shunned me until now. But now that I have gotten rid of that Grand Master and gained control of the Hero, suddenly everyone wants to meet me? They’re all hypocrites."

Despite complaining about this, Cardinal Flux looked happy, so his secretary did not take it to heart.

"Sir, you have another meeting in 5 minutes. The Tower Master is here to meet you and the Hero. And I am afraid that this is one meeting you cannot postpone, even if you want to."

Cardinal Flux gave his assistant an annoyed glance before he pushed himself out of his chair.

"Tsk, I do know that. But that does not mean I have to be happy about it. Now, let’s get going."

The assistant nodded, and they entered the guest room. Neil was already waiting for them there with a nervous look on his face. The kid fidgeted in his place, wondering what he was supposed to do, when Cardinal Flux sat beside him and gave him a nod of acknowledgment.

Neil did not know where to look—he felt awkward around the Cardinal, and the Tower Master...was scary.

"Cardinal Flux, welcome to this meeting. I assume you are too busy these days to keep track of time?"

The subtle jab did not go unnoticed by the Cardinal, and he gritted his teeth in anger. But then, he slowly started to calm himself down and let out a sigh that almost mocked the Tower Master.

"I have to admit that I am too busy to entertain most guests these days. However, I can make time for important ones. So, how can I help you today?"

He asked, and the Tower Master smiled at his words.

"Well, thank you for hearing me out. And I apologize for visiting you during such a busy time. I am sure that this business is also the reason you forgot about the deal between the temple and the Magic Tower."

Cardinal Flux had just picked up his tea when he paused and brought it back down.

He had a feeling he was about to hear something ridiculous from the man in front of him.

"Excuse me, but what do you mean to say?"

The Tower Master smiled harmlessly, but Cardinal Flux was not fooled by his gentle expression. Instead, he waited for the cutting words he needed to argue against.

"Well, we had a deal that the Hero would be looked after by Grand Master Kael. Leon was entrusted to him for the same reason. So it is only natural that the new Hero should also be handed to Kael to look after."

The Tower Master proclaimed, and Cardinal Flux felt like the ground was shaking under his feet.

He did recall this deal, but he had no intention of honoring it. He was going to monopolize the Hero this time.

"I am afraid that it won’t be possible. Grand Master Kael is already looking after Leon. So having the new Hero there would make the atmosphere awkward. It would be better if the temple trained the new Hero."

Neil shattered his expectations by speaking those absurd words. The Cardinal was so shocked that he did not even have time to react to what was happening.

Meanwhile, the Tower Master nodded and grabbed the kid’s hand to lead him out.

"Since this has been decided, I will take the new Hero now and hand him over to Leon. I hope you have a good time, Cardinal."

"H-Hey, wait-!"

The Tower Master left the room with Neil, and Cardinal Flux was left standing with his hand outstretched.

He still found it hard to believe what had happened.

Not only had Neil betrayed him for Kael, but he had also done it in front of the worst person possible.

"Darn it! What do I do now?"

Cardinal Flux complained, wondering how much damage control he would have to do because of it.

A lot of nobles were asking to meet the new Hero, and he had agreed in exchange for noble connections. And now he could no longer deliver on that promise.
