Chapter 139: Ch 137: Temporary Fairwell
[Dear Grand Master Kael,
I heard about your return, and I would like to express my delight to see that you are alright. However, if something like this ever happens again, you should contact me first and make arrangements to leave the Saintess and Hero in my custody.
Speaking of the Saintess and the Hero, I would like to invite them and, by extension, you to the temple for a quick meet and greet. I would like to make sure they are fine, as well as officially declare the Saintess’s return.
Please let me know when you can visit us at the earliest.
Regards,
Cardinal Flux]
Kael burned the letter as soon as he was done reading it.
’Tsk, it has not even been a single day since I came back. How did that Cardinal know he should send me a letter now?’
Kael wanted to blame it on some secret power that told the Cardinal when he was back. But he knew that it was more than likely a coincidence.
"What does the temple want?"
Leon asked in a curious tone, and Kael decided to answer him.
"Cardinal Flux is inviting you and Seraphina to officially announce your return from the war. Do you want to go...your face tells me all I need to know."
Leon looked irritated at the thought of visiting the temple, and Kael was prepared to write a letter expressing his regrets about not being able to visit the temple.
But the Hero changed his mind at the last second.
"I have a feeling that Cardinal Flux will keep annoying us if we don’t take his words seriously. I would rather get this situation over with quickly."
Kael had a regretful look on his face, but he decided to go with Leon’s suggestion.
"Alright. I’ll send a letter back, and we can head to the temple tomorrow. For now, let’s head back to our rooms and rest. I will announce this new trip during dinner."
...
Dinner time arrived in a blink, and Kael also had another visitor to take care of.
Lyra, the Demon Queen, stepped into Kael’s house in her human form for the first time, and she had a proud look on her face.
"Everyone, the magnificent Demon Queen is here in all her glory. Usually, people bow in my presence, but I will allow you the special privilege of sitting as my equal...hey, pay attention to my speech!"
Lyra loudly announced herself while dinner was ongoing, but everyone just looked at her for a second before they went back to eating...except Kael.
Knowing Lyra’s temper, there was no telling when she might lose it and decide to do something drastic. So he noticed her sour mood immediately.
"Demon Queen Lyra, why don’t you take a seat for now? I will serve you something that you are sure to like."
Kael told her, and Lyra felt intrigued enough to follow his instructions.
"You will serve me something I will surely like? How would you even know my preferences? My palate is rather refined and-"
Kael placed a plate of normal-looking noodles in front of her, and Lyra’s mouth watered. She almost reached for the plate before she recalled where she was and what she was doing.
Cough
"Do you think something this simple can impress me? I have tasted all kinds of delicacies. This much is nothing."
Lyra declared, but her mouth was already watering with the need to taste those noodles ever since she had first smelled them while she was cursed.
"Oh! So you don’t want these noodles? That’s fine. I can give them to someone else then. I just thought you would want to taste the thing you always rushed for when you were cursed."
Kael had seen all kinds of red-faced people due to his profession, but he had never seen anyone turn as red as Lyra did in that brief period.
In fact, he was sure it was biologically impossible for a human to get that red. The only possible explanation was her demon blood.
"Y-You think I liked the smell of these noodles when I was cursed? And what do you mean by cursed? How can a dignified Demon Queen like me get cursed..."
The more Lyra spoke, the deeper she dug her own grave. She was so nervous that she was even forgetting what she was saying.
Kael felt a laugh bubble up in his throat, but he held it back. After all, he did not want to embarrass Lyra too much.
Instead, he reached toward the bowl placed in front of Lyra and grabbed it.
"So I assume you won’t be eating this-"
"Well, since it’s already prepared, I might as well take a bite to taste it...just to make sure it’s alright for consumption. This is a very important matter after all."
Lyra nodded to herself while inching the bowl closer to herself.
Kael did not say anything, but he did hear Leon calling Lyra a ’headache’.
Once dinner finished, Lyra decided to take Elena back with her for the ’official’ paperwork.
After a lot of gentle coaxing, Lyra finally managed to take Elena with her. And by that, Kael meant that she grabbed Elena by the back and decided to drag her out. Leon even helped her by opening the doors.
"M-Mother-! Don’t abandon me. Take me with you-"
"Ugh, we will be back soon anyway. Just stop fighting me and come along."
"Elena, be a good girl. You will come back soon."
Finally, it was peaceful once more. But Kael knew that this peace was only temporary. After all, they needed to head to the temple in a few hours.
Kael went to bed with the hope that something would happen that would make him not visit the temple. Heck, he even thought about faking an accident.
Unfortunately, by the time he made up his mind, it was already time for them to leave.
They teleported to the temple with sour looks on their faces and were instantly greeted by Cardinal Flux and his people.
"Welcome, Saintess, Hero, and everyone else. It is my honor to welcome you here. Saintess, please follow the female servants. Hero Leon, you can follow the paladins. As for the other two, please come to the guest room with me. The kids will be there soon once they are ready."
