The Valley, The Northern Territories, The Runner Communication — Spring
Brother Solen named it on the forty-first day of the spring.
He named it during the morning practice, in the interval between the practice’s second and third movements where the practitioners held the achieved position and the mana’s response to the holding expressed itself through the root network in the form that the genuine position produced rather than the adequate approximation of it. Helena had been reading the root network at this interval every morning for eight months and understood its quality in the specific depth that eight months of the daily reading built, which was the depth that distinguished the variation from the change, the variation being the ordinary fluctuation of the complex system and the change being the thing that persisted across the variation.
She had been reading a change for three days without the name for it.
Solen said: "The northern quality."
She looked at him across the practice’s held position with the question in the quality of the attention rather than the form of the speech, and he answered it in the same form, with the specific patience of someone who had been in the original practice long enough to understand that some things arrived in the language before they arrived in the explanation.
After the practice concluded, in the working tent where the botanical record accumulated in its careful pages, he told her what he meant.
"The northern territories," he said. "The mana there has a quality that the other territories don’t carry. Has had it since the first dissolution. I’ve been reading it in the runner communications from the practice community in the Harren’s Ridge adjacent settlement, and in my own readings at the valley’s range." He paused in the sitting-with. "The quality is not only the dissolved administration’s absence. It’s something the mana carries in that territory that it doesn’t carry here yet. Something prior."
She received this.
"Prior," she said.
"Older than the suppression," he said. "The way that the seventh Forgotten Place was older than the suppression. The way that the high meadow held the original condition not because the suppression had been removed there but because the suppression had never fully reached it." Another pause. "The northern territories’ substrate is carrying something similar. Not in the full form. In the direction of it, but more advanced than what we read here. As though the northern mana had more to return to."
She extended the vines into the tent’s floor soil at the range the Uncos permitted and read what the ambient quality at the northern range produced.
It was there.
She had been reading it as the signal’s effect on the northern territories, the signal’s movement through the mana producing the altered quality she had identified in the autumn and named in the document Amari had sent. But Solen was pointing at something beneath the signal’s quality, something that the signal’s ambient movement through the northern substrate had been overlaying without eliminating.
The northern mana carried a quality that was not the signal and was not the practice’s increment and was not the dissolved administration’s absence.
It was the quality of the place where the covenant’s original condition had been expressed most fully and most recently.
She held the reading for a long time.
"John," she said.
The word arrived in the flat quality of the accurate identification rather than the quality of the grief, the grief being present and real and not the form the identification required. The identification required the accurate form, which was: the northern territories carried the quality of the place where the staff had expressed the covenant’s original condition in the engagements that had dissolved the three gods, and the expression had left something in the substrate that the dissolved administration’s absence was now allowing to surface, the way that the creek bed had surfaced the water the watershed redirection had suppressed.
The mana in the northern territories was carrying the memory of what the staff had done there.
Not the memory in the human sense. The arboreal sense, the geological sense, the sense in which very old things and very deep systems held the record of the significant events that had moved through them, the record being present in the quality of the subsequent condition rather than in the form of the documentation.
John had moved through the northern territories with the staff expressing the covenant’s original condition, and the covenant’s original condition had reached the substrate, and the substrate held it now in the form that significant things were held when they had reached the depth.
Solen was watching her with the patient attention of someone who had named the thing and was waiting for the naming to arrive in the other person in the form the other person’s route produced.
"He left something there," she said.
"Yes," Solen said.
"Not intentionally."
"No. The way the significant work leaves something in the places it passes through. Not through the intention but through the depth of the expression." He looked at the botanical record’s most recent pages, where the substrate path notations had been building the map’s northeastern extension across the spring’s fifty-one days. "The northeastern substrate formation that you found in the autumn. The old water table path running toward the border territories."
She looked at the map.
The northeastern formation ran from the valley’s geological base toward the border territories and through them toward the northern administrative boundary, the boundary being the edge of where the dissolved administration had been and where the four remaining gods’ suppression began.
The northern territories were on the other side of that boundary.
"The path reaches the northern substrate," she said.
"The path reaches the substrate that carries the quality John left in it," Solen said. "The path and the quality are the same substrate formation. The same geological architecture. The mana moving through the path is moving toward the place where the expression was deepest and the substrate has been returning to what it was since the dissolution."
She looked at the map for the interval of the genuine thinking.
The practice in the valley producing the increment, the increment widening the gap, the gap changing the local mana quality, the changed mana quality interacting with the substrate paths, the substrate paths carrying the lateral movement toward the border territories, the border territories’ nine percent residual opening in the western gap connecting to the northeastern formation, the northeastern formation running toward the northern territories’ substrate that carried the quality of the covenant’s expression at its deepest recent reach.
The whole structure visible at once, in the form that the accumulated evidence produced when the genuine attention had been applied to it long enough for the structure to become legible.
"The practice isn’t only widening the gap," she said.
"No," Solen said. "The practice is creating the channel. The channel connects the valley’s increment to the northern quality. When the channel reaches the northern substrate, the quality John left there will have a path back."
She held the full form of this.
Not triumph. Not the performed realization of the significant thing. The honest form, which was the quality of the significant understanding arrived at through the sustained work, carrying the weight of what the understanding implied and what it would require and what it meant for the long timeline.
"How long," she said.
Solen looked at the map’s scale notation, at the distance between the valley’s geological formation and the northern territories’ boundary.
"Years," he said. "The channel building at the rate the practice produces. The substrate paths conducting the lateral movement at the rate the mana’s own movement permits." He calculated in the patient form of someone for whom the years were the honest timeline rather than the discouraged one. "Five years for the channel to reach the northern boundary’s substrate. Perhaps more."
"Then the quality begins its return," she said.
"South," he said. "Through the connected substrate. Through the paths the mana is finding. By the increment."
She looked at the botanical record’s pages, at the fern colony at eighty percent and the willowherb at seventy-three and the sedge at eighty-eight and all the careful notations of the living things conducting themselves in the deficit and reaching toward what they required.
In five years, or more, something of what John had expressed in the northern territories would begin moving south through the substrate toward the valley and beyond.
She would keep the record until then.
She would continue the practice until then.
And after then, as long as the continuing required.
The runner communication from Shen Wei arrived in the seventh week of the spring.
Helena had sent the initial communication in the third month of the winter, through Fenwick’s runner network, addressed to the mountain monastery where the transmission’s records indicated Shen Wei had returned after John’s death, the return being the form that the person who had sent John on the journey took when the journey had concluded in the form it had concluded in.
She had written the communication in the plain language of the person who had been on the journey and who had specific questions that the person who had prepared the traveler for the journey might be able to answer.
She had not been certain Shen Wei would respond.
The response arrived in the form of three pages written in the quality of someone very old whose hand had remained precise in the way that the essential functions remained precise in the very old when they had been conducted across enough time to become the condition of the body rather than the application of the will.
She read it once.
She read it again, in the quality of the reading that the significant document required, which was the quality of the genuine reception rather than the managed one.
She went to find Solen.
He read it in the lamp’s evening light, taking the time the reading required without the compression that the functional reading applied to the documentation that required only the information rather than the full form.
When he had finished he set it on the table between them and looked at it for the interval of the honest sitting-with.
"He didn’t know," Solen said.
"No," she said. "He suspected. The communication describes what he suspected in the careful language of someone who had thought about this for a very long time and who was uncertain whether the suspicion was the accurate assessment or the hope organized into the form of the assessment."
Solen looked at the pages.
She read the relevant section aloud, not in the performed form but in the plain form of the accurate transmission of the content to the person who had already read it and for whom the reading aloud was the form of the shared holding rather than the information transfer.
Shen Wei had written: John did not go north to defeat the gods. He went north because the staff was moving north and because six centuries of the particular kind of attention had produced in him the specific quality of knowing when the thing he was an instrument of was moving in a direction, and the honest form of the person who had developed that quality was the form of the following rather than the directing. He may have understood, in the final months, what he was an instrument of. He did not tell me, which means he was either uncertain or he understood that the telling would have changed the form of my sending, and he did not want the form of my sending changed.
She set the pages down.
Solen was quiet for the interval of the full reception.
"He went because the staff was moving," Solen said.
"Yes," she said.
"Not because the prophecy predicted the Seeker would go."
"The prophecy described what would happen when the accumulated person received the staff," she said. "Shen Wei’s account suggests John understood this in the late period of the journey, possibly at the seventh Forgotten Place. The staff wasn’t leading him to the rightful holder. The staff was leading him to the person who could receive the transmission."
Solen looked at the lamp’s flame in the quality of the genuine thinking conducted in the presence of the significant understanding.
"Amari," he said.
"John had to reach Amari," she said. "Not through the direct path, which wasn’t available. Through the path the staff required, which was the path through the engagements that changed the mana’s quality in the northern territories and left something in the substrate and produced the covenant’s expression in the form deep enough to reach the substrate’s depth." She paused. "The rightful holder received the staff. The staff reached Amari. Both were necessary. John was the instrument of both."
"He knew he wouldn’t survive to see it complete," Solen said.
"Shen Wei thinks he knew from the fourth month of the journey," she said. "The honest arithmetic. He was not a person who avoided the honest arithmetic."
The lamp held its quality between them in the evening’s stillness, the tent’s walls carrying the spring night’s cold at a distance, the botanical record’s pages spread across the working surface with the map’s accumulated notations and the northeastern formation’s extension toward the northern territories’ boundary.
Solen looked at the map.
"The channel we’re building," he said. "The substrate path toward the northern quality."
"Yes," she said. "What John left in the northern territories. What the practice will eventually connect to. What will come back south through the substrate over the years." She looked at the northeastern formation’s notation. "He completed the conditions. The work is completing the rest."
Solen received this in the full form.
After a long interval he said: "The practice community in the northern territories. The monks there, conducting the original form in the adjacent settlements. They’ve been reading the northern quality for eight months without understanding its source."
"I’ll write to them," she said.
"They should know what they’re practicing beside," he said.
She thought of John in the high meadow receiving the covenant’s complete picture through the root network with the quality of someone receiving the confirmation of the thing already understood, and she thought of him saying He was part of it about Kiran and meaning the mana’s return and meaning also the thing that every element of the genuine work was part of, which was the larger work that the larger work was part of, each the genuine thing conducting itself toward the return through the form available to it.
She thought of the staff’s transmission, which she had read in the document Amari had sent in the autumn, carrying in the account’s interior a reference she had recognized in the specific way of the person who knew the person being referenced.
The staff contained John’s name once.
Not in the form of the biography or the record. In the form the oldest naming used when it meant the person who had come before the receiving, the person whose passage had made the receiving possible. Not the hero of the theological narrative, not the exceptional individual, not the destined figure. The person whose six centuries of the particular quality of attention, and whose specific passage through the northern territories with the staff expressing the covenant’s original condition, had produced the substrate quality that Solen had named that morning and that the northeastern formation was carrying toward the boundary in the lateral movement of the mana’s own return.
He came before.
That was the complete statement. That was the form the accurate acknowledgment took when the accurate acknowledgment was organized around what had actually been accomplished rather than the form the narrative required.
She looked at the lamp.
She thought of amber eyes and the wolf’s recognition and eleven seconds and his hand in hers and John sitting on the other side saying the name once in the form that meant I see you, and she held all of it in the full weight without the management, the grief and the anger and the sharpness and the depth and the continuation all present simultaneously in the way of the honest things that occupied the same interior when the interior had the room.
She had the room.
"I’ll write the communication tonight," she said.
She pulled the writing materials toward her and began.
In the northern territories, in the settlements where the mana’s quality had been carrying the covenant’s expression at the substrate depth since the three engagements, the practice community of four monks conducted the original form every morning at the early hour in the specific quality of people who had been reading something in the mana that they did not have the full framework for.
Brother Aldric, the eldest of the four, who had handed the staff to Fenwick in the plain transfer twenty-three days before Fenwick had reached Carthon, had been reading the northern quality since the dissolution and had not yet named what he was reading in the legible form.
He had been waiting for the naming to arrive in the form that the significant things arrived in, which was the form of the genuine understanding rather than the provisional framework.
Helena’s communication would reach him in the third week of the spring through Fenwick’s runner network.
He would read it once and then go to the practice’s starting position and read the northern mana in the full depth of the original form with the information the communication carried, the information changing the reading in the specific way that the framework changed the reading when the framework was the accurate one rather than the provisional.
He would find what he had been reading for eight months in the legible form.
He would sit with it in the quality of the genuine reception.
He would say, in the quiet of the northern morning with the spring’s quality in the air and the mana carrying the covenant’s expression at the substrate depth around him, the name once.
In the form that meant: I see you.
Which was the only form the accurate acknowledgment required.
