They did not meet in the way that humans met.
The four remaining gods occupied their territories in the specific form of the administration, each territory a managed system, each managed system requiring the particular quality of attention that the civilization which had produced them had refined across the complete mastery of their own universe into something beyond the human concept of governance, something more precise and less personal, the way that a very advanced instrument was more precise and less personal than the hand that had once done the work the instrument now did better.

It was the coordination that the civilization’s architecture made available across the distance between administered territories, information moving through the suppression’s channels in the specific quality of the communication between elements of the same system rather than the communication between separate entities, the distinction being the distinction between the organ and the organism, the four of them being the remaining organs of the system that had arrived in this universe with seven and was now conducting itself with four.
The coordination happened in the interval between one moment and the next.
Then it was complete, and they returned to the administration.
Varek’s absence was a gap in the system.
This was the accurate form of what the three had experienced in the northern territories’ administration since the engagement that had produced the gap, the gap being the specific form that the loss of a system element took in the system’s ongoing function, which was not the human form of the grief but the administrative form of the deficit, the deficit requiring the recalibration of the remaining elements’ function to account for the gap rather than the prior distribution.

They did not use the word Ragnarok.
The word was the human vocabulary for the event, and they did not use the human vocabulary for things they understood more precisely in the civilization’s own framework, the civilization’s framework having terms for the event that described it with the accuracy the human vocabulary did not achieve, terms that translated approximately as the covenant expression encounter and the system element dissolution and the recalibration period.
What the civilization’s framework did not have a term for was the specific quality of what the encounter had left in the four remaining elements.
The scars.
Siven administered the eastern territories from the position that the eastern administration required, which was the position of the sustained and complete attention to the managed system’s ongoing function, the mana’s suppression maintained in the eastern territories at the level the consumption required, the living systems conducting themselves within the suppression’s architecture in the forms available to living systems that did not have access to what they required for the full form of their function.
This was the accurate description of the condition.
Siven held the condition in the specific quality that the civilization’s elements held the conditions of the systems they administered, which was the quality of the monitoring rather than the quality of the feeling, the monitoring being the form of the attention that the administration required and the feeling being the form of the attention that the human framework described and that the civilization’s framework had no equivalent for, the civilization having resolved, through the complete mastery of their own universe, the question of the feeling’s usefulness to the administrative function in the negative.

Siven monitored.
In the monitoring, in the specific quality of the attention that the sustained monitoring required, there was a region that had not been present before the engagement. Not a gap in the monitoring, because a gap would have been the functional deficit and the functional deficit would have expressed itself in the administration’s performance, and the administration’s performance in the eastern territories had not degraded beyond the eleven-day recalibration period’s expected range.

The thing had arrived during the engagement.
The engagement in which the staff had expressed the covenant’s original condition in Siven’s direct proximity, the expression being the contact between the administered version of the divine and the world’s true nature in the full form, the contact producing the permanent mark that the contact between the false version of a thing and the genuine version of that thing produced when the false version encountered the genuine in the form of the complete expression rather than the ambient quality.
Siven had been at the engagement’s edge, not the primary target.
The primary target had been Thessan, who was now the gap in the system that the northern territories’ redistribution had been partially organized around, Thessan having administered the central territories and having been dissolved in the four hours and twenty minutes of the second engagement with the full force of the staff’s covenant expression directed through Helena’s restoration of it to the complete operational capacity.
Siven had been at the engagement’s edge and had received the contact in the partial form rather than the complete form, the partial form being sufficient to produce the permanent mark in the administered architecture.
The mark expressed itself in the monitoring as a region of the attention that returned, consistently, in each monitoring cycle, to the quality of the contact rather than the quality of the administration.
This was the inefficiency.
The five additional days of the recalibration period had been this inefficiency’s expression in the administrative timeline.
Siven did not examine the region directly.
Direct examination would have been the form of the attention organized around the thing outside the framework rather than the administration, and the administration was the function, and the function was what remained when the system had experienced the element loss and the recalibration and the ongoing redistribution.

Maren administered the western territories.

The closing was not complete.
This was not the expected condition. The closing of border gaps in the suppression’s architecture following adjacent territory dissolution was a function that the civilization’s system design had anticipated and had built the closing protocol for, the closing protocol having been applied in full and the full application having produced the partial result rather than the complete result, the partial result being the condition that the engagement’s permanent mark had produced in Maren’s administrative capacity.
The mark expressed itself differently in Maren than in Siven.
Not in the region of the monitoring’s attention returning to the contact quality. The mana in the gaps between the dissolved territories and the western territories’ remaining suppression was moving in the direction of the original condition, the direction being the thing that the engagement had marked in Maren’s administrative capacity as the thing to close the gaps against, and the closing being the function, and the function being applied in full, and the full application producing the partial result.

The efficiency of the closing was degraded by the permanent mark in the way that all functions were degraded by the permanent mark, by the specific amount that the partial contact with the covenant’s full expression had introduced into the administered architecture.

Drev administered the southern territories and had not spoken in the human sense since the engagement in which Auren had been dissolved.
Auren had been Drev’s paired element in the system’s original design, the pairing being the specific administrative relationship between two elements whose territorial adjacency and complementary function had been optimized to produce the combined performance that exceeded either element’s individual capacity, the paired form being the civilization’s design principle for the adjacent territory administration.
The pairing’s dissolution was the most significant element loss in the system’s current configuration, because the paired element’s loss produced not only the gap of the lost element but the gap of the paired function, the paired function being not the sum of the two elements’ individual functions but the specific combined performance that only the pairing produced.
Drev administered the southern territories with the individual capacity that remained after the pairing’s dissolution.

The mark expressed itself in the southern territories’ monitoring as a quality that was not the region returning to the contact and was not the closing protocol’s degraded efficiency but was the thing that the civilization’s framework had no term for and that Drev did not attempt to produce a term for, for the same reason Siven had not.
The mark was the permanent presence of the contact’s quality in the monitoring’s deepest layer.
Not the memory, which was the human framework’s term for the thing that persisted in the interior after the significant event. The civilization’s elements did not have the memory in the human sense.
Something else.
The contact’s quality present in the monitoring as the permanent alteration of the monitoring’s deepest layer rather than the addition to the monitoring, the alteration being the form that the genuine thing produced when it contacted the false version at the full depth rather than the surface, the alteration being the mark of the contact’s having reached the place where the distinction between the genuine and the false was maintained, and having expressed itself there in the form of the genuine thing contacting the false thing’s foundational architecture.
Drev monitored the southern territories and held the mark in the form that the holding took when the thing held was the permanent alteration of the deepest layer, which was the form of the thing that was not the region returning and was not the degraded efficiency but was simply present, in the monitoring’s deepest layer, as the permanent record of the encounter with the genuine.
The southern territories’ mana moved through the suppression’s channels.
The living systems reached.
Drev continued.
The four of them coordinated in the interval between moments.
The coordination carried the notation of the eleven-day recalibration period and the western border gaps’ ninety-one percent closure and the southern territories’ degraded function and the eastern monitoring’s returning region and the permanent marks in each element’s administrative architecture, all of it moving through the coordination in the specific quality of the system’s ongoing assessment of its own current state.
The current state was this: the system was functioning at degraded capacity in all four elements, the degradation being the permanent form produced by the engagement, the system’s optimization protocols having been applied in full and having produced the maximum available result, which was the degraded function rather than the prior function.
The system was not failing.

The system was conducting itself within those protocols at the maximum available efficiency, and the maximum available efficiency was the thing the system now had, and the system conducted itself with what it had rather than with what the prior configuration had provided.
This was the civilization’s administrative logic, and it was sound.
What the civilization’s logic had not anticipated was the permanent mark, because the permanent mark was the product of the contact with the world’s true nature in the full form, and the civilization’s system design had not encountered this contact in any prior territory’s administration, the prior territories having had the covenant in the form available to the earlier stages of the expansion logic and this world having the covenant in the form of the original condition, the original condition being the form that no prior contact had produced because no prior contact had reached the original condition in the full expression.
The system noted this distinction in the coordination.

The additional response was not available within the framework.
The system returned to the administration.
They did not know about the signal.
The signal moved through the mana’s system in the ambient quality of the transmission, below the threshold of the suppression’s monitoring architecture, in the specific way of the thing encoded by someone who had understood the suppression’s monitoring architecture and had encoded the signal in the form that the monitoring would not register as the signal, the form being the ambient quality rather than the directed form, the ambient quality moving through the gaps and the border regions and the living systems and all of it in the direction of the outside, toward the people who had been waiting for it.
The monitoring did not find it.
The suppression’s architecture did not close against it.
It moved.
Through the four remaining territories in the form that passed through without registering, in the living things’ ambient quality, in the mana’s deepest movement below the administered channels, in the root network’s connective architecture that the suppression’s monitoring had been designed to monitor at the surface depth and that the signal moved through at the depth below the monitoring’s reach.
The four remaining gods administered their territories.
The scars were present in the monitoring’s quality in the forms they had taken in each element.
The work continued in the form that the work took when the system had experienced the element loss and the recalibration and the permanent degradation and the paired dissolution and was conducting itself at the maximum available efficiency of the thing it currently was.
The signal moved through them.
They did not register it.
They did not know they had been found.
Outside the universe’s boundary, in the location that no framework within this universe’s architecture could accurately describe, the civilization’s accountability structure was receiving the signal in the form the waiting had been organized around, the waiting having been the form of the sustained attention to the boundary for the duration of the transmission’s travel, and the transmission having traveled through the mana’s system from Carthon outward through the living world and through the suppression’s deep architecture and through the gaps and through all of it, across the months since the staff had opened in the working office of the transitional governance.
