Chapter 130: The Companion Who Survived

The Valley — Spring into Summer into the Following Year

She woke before the light.

This had been true since Kiran, and before Kiran since the second Forgotten Place, and before the second Forgotten Place since the first engagement where she had conducted the Uncos at the maximum available intensity and had come back to the camp afterward in the specific quality of someone whose interior had been rearranged by what the intensity required and who needed the early hour’s stillness to take the accounting of what remained.

The early hour had become the form the day began in. Not the choice and not the discipline. The honest condition of someone whose interior had been rearranged enough times that the rearrangement was the condition rather than the event.

She dressed in the valley’s cold and went out.

The root network in the spring was different from the root network in the winter in the specific way that the same system expressing itself through different seasonal conditions was different, which was different in the form rather than the substance, the substance being the mana’s directional movement through the living things and the form being the form available to each season’s particular expression of that movement.

In winter the movement was slow and legible in the way of slow things, each element of the reading distinct from the others in the way that cold separated things into their individual qualities.

In spring the movement was faster and more complex and required the depth that the journey had built to read accurately, the depth being necessary because the spring’s complexity produced, in the shallow reading, the impression of the greater return than the accurate reading confirmed, the living things’ acceleration of activity creating the surface quality of the mana’s abundance when the accurate reading found the deeper condition, which was the mana moving in the direction of the return at a rate that the spring’s acceleration temporarily amplified without changing.

She had learned to read past the amplification in the third week of the spring.

It had taken three weeks because the amplification was genuinely similar to the return in its surface expression and because the distinction between the two required the depth that distinguished the direction from the arrival, the direction being present in both the amplification and the return and the arrival being the thing only the return contained.

She extended the vines into the valley’s morning soil and read what the reading produced.

The mana was moving.

The gap that she had found at the valley’s northern edge in the forty-second day of the winter had widened across the subsequent months by the increment that the practice in the adjusted positioning produced, the widening being present in the root network’s quality in the form of the slightly altered ratio between the suppression’s architecture and the mana’s freedom of movement within the territory above the valley, the ratio shifting in the direction of the freedom by the amount the practice’s sustained conduct in the specific location had produced.

The amount was small.

The direction was real.

The change was in what the practice included that it had not included before the staff arrived in the valley through the ambient quality of the mana’s movement, which was not the staff’s physical presence, the staff being in Carthon in the working office, but the staff’s effect on the mana’s directional movement, the effect propagating through the root network from Carthon southward and expressing itself in the valley’s root network in the form of a subtle alteration in the quality of the direction.

She had noticed this in the second month of the spring.

She had not named it immediately, because the naming required the accurate form and the accurate form required the sustained observation across enough instances to distinguish the new element from the variation, the variation being the ordinary fluctuation that any complex system expressed and the new element being the thing that persisted across the variation.

It had persisted.

She had named it in the third month: the mana’s direction in the valley had acquired a quality she did not have the prior language for, a quality that was not the practice’s effect and was not the gap’s widening and was not the seasonal amplification but something adjacent to all three and reducible to none of them, something that expressed itself in the root network as the faint quality of the system receiving information from a source outside its immediate architecture.

She did not know what the source was.

She knew the quality of the receiving, which was the quality available to the honest attention in the depth the journey had built, the depth being the form of the knowing that six months of the valley’s practice had not produced on its own but that the journey’s nine months and the Forgotten Places and the covenant’s complete picture had produced and that the valley’s practice had been developing since, the way that sustained engagement with the genuine thing developed the capacity to receive the genuine thing in deeper form over time.

She told Brother Solen what she was reading.

He listened in the quality of the genuine attention and then sat with it for the interval of the honest thinking, which was the interval that was not the hesitation of someone uncertain of the response but the sitting-with of someone arriving at the response through the complete account rather than the partial one.

She received this.

The northern territories. The valley. The same quality in the root network arriving in different locations through different expressions of the same system.

She did not know what it was.

She noted this in the record with the accurate notation.

The willowherb on the valley’s south slope was performing at seventy-three percent, the deficit expressing itself in the early termination of the flowering cycle, the flowers completing at a rate three weeks faster than the full capacity required, the early termination being the plant’s response to the mana’s insufficient provision for the completion of the full cycle.

She noted this.

The sedge grass along the valley’s water source was performing at eighty-eight percent, the deficit smaller here because the sedge’s particular relationship to the mana was mediated through the water source and the water source was in the direct path of the gap’s widening effect, the gap having widened sufficiently in six months to improve the water source’s mana quality above the valley’s general condition.

She noted this also, and noted the distinction between the sedge’s condition and the fern’s, and noted what the distinction implied about the gap’s directional effect on the valley’s mana distribution, which was that the gap produced improvement in the mana quality that was not uniform across the valley but was concentrated along the path of the mana’s movement through the gap, the path being the northern edge’s corridor through the territory above.

She had been reading the root network for six months without the record’s form, the reading living in the interior in the form of the accumulated knowing rather than the documented form, and the accumulated knowing was the form available to the single reader and the documented form was the form available to the people the knowing needed to reach, the distinction being the distinction between the knowledge that lived in one person and the knowledge that lived in the system.

She wrote carefully, in the specific language of the botanical observation rather than the language of the covenant or the mana’s theory, because the botanical language was the language that carried the precision the documentation required and was the language available to the people outside the practice community who would need to read the record and understand what it described.

Brother Solen read the first month’s record in the quality of someone who had been present for the observations and who was finding, in the written form, the thing the observations had been building toward in a shape more complete than the individual observations had produced.

"The deficit is not uniform," he said.

"No," she said.

"It follows the suppression’s architecture," he said.

"Yes," she said. "The territories where the architecture is denser show deeper deficits in the species most sensitive to the mana’s quality. The territories where the architecture is thinner, or where it has been disrupted, show the deficits in proportion to the disruption’s extent."

He looked at the record.

"This is a map," he said.

She had understood this since the third week of the record’s writing without having used the word, the word arriving now through Solen’s naming of it in the form of the accurate label for the thing the record had been building.

"Yes," she said.

A map of the suppression’s architecture, expressed through the living things conducting themselves within it, the living things being the instrument of the mapping because the living things were the system the suppression acted upon and their responses to the suppression’s conditions were the evidence of those conditions in the form most legible to the genuine attention.

The record was twelve pages.

It would be longer.

She went back to the writing.

She thought about Kiran in the summer in the specific form that the summer produced, the summer’s fullness being the season that expressed most clearly the gap between what the world was and what the seventh Forgotten Place had shown her it had been, the showing having been in the form of the direct experience of the world’s original condition through the root network in the high meadow, the original condition being the form the summer would have taken if the four centuries had not taken it in the direction they had taken it.

She thought about Kiran because Kiran had been the summer in the quality of his particular presence, warm and precise and managing the care he felt for things in the form available to someone who had learned that the management of what you felt was the form the having of it required, and the summer’s fullness made his absence the particular shape of the season rather than the general shape of the loss.

She did not manage the thinking.

She held him in the full form, amber eyes and the wolf’s recognition and the eleven seconds and his hand in hers at the end, and she let the holding be what the holding was, which was grief in the honest form rather than the managed version.

Then she returned to the record.

This was the form the continuing took. Not the resolution and not the movement past the grief but the grief and the record simultaneously, each in its full form, the two forms not canceling each other but occupying the same interior in the way that the honest things occupied the same interior when the interior had enough room for both, the room having been produced by the structural exhaustion’s removal of the management that had kept things separate and contained.

She had more room now than she had had before the structural exhaustion.

The room was not comfortable.

It was accurate.

John she thought about differently.

Not because the loss was smaller, which was not the form that the genuine accounting produced when it was conducted honestly. Because the form of the loss was different in the specific way that the loss of someone who had lived for six centuries and understood the living as the preparation for the work’s completion was different from the loss of someone who had been thirty-one and the wrong configuration at the wrong moment.

John had known.

She had understood this since the high meadow, where the covenant’s complete picture had arrived in both of them through the root network simultaneously and where she had read, in the quality of his reception of the complete picture, the specific quality of someone who was receiving the confirmation of the thing he had already understood would require everything and who was receiving the confirmation in the form of the accepted cost rather than the form of the resistance.

She had not named this at the time because the naming had required more distance than the high meadow provided.

She named it now in the summer of the valley, walking the eastern edge with the vines extended and the botanical record building in the daily notation, the naming being: John had understood that the completion was his function and that the completion required his death and had conducted himself toward the completion in the full knowledge of this, which was not the form of the sacrifice organized around the performance of the sacrifice but the form of the honest arithmetic applied to the honest assessment of what the work required.

She held this.

She thought about what six centuries of the particular kind of attention produced in a person, the attention having been turned toward the covenant and the mana and the living world and the Forgotten Places and the assembly and all of it across six centuries, and she thought about what the person produced by six centuries of that attention understood that she did not yet understand and might not understand for a very long time.

She was not six centuries old.

She was the person the journey had made her, which was different from the person she had been before the journey in the specific ways that the journey’s nine months and the Forgotten Places and the covenant’s complete picture and Kiran and John and the valley’s six months had made her different.

The difference was not wisdom in the performed sense.

The difference was depth. The depth available to the genuine attention when the genuine attention had been applied to the genuine condition across enough time and enough cost to produce the depth rather than the surface reading.

She was still building it.

The building was the form the continuing took for someone who had not yet arrived at the destination and who understood that the destination was across the long timeline and that the long timeline required the sustained conduct of the work in the form available at each stage of the building.

She walked the eastern edge and read the root network and noted the fern colony’s eighty percent in the record and continued.

In the autumn a runner arrived from Carthon.

Not the runner communication that she received monthly from Brother Fenwick, which was the form of the working communication between the valley and the transitional governance’s adjacent functions, carrying the botanical record’s summaries to the council’s working documentation where Councillor Dara had been integrating them with the inspection circuit reports and Petra’s agrarian assessments from the Caldris Plain.

A different runner. Young, perhaps eighteen, with the quality of someone who had been moving at the pace the urgency required for longer than the comfortable duration and who had arrived in the valley in the specific form of the person who had been carrying something that required delivery.

She received the runner at the valley’s northern edge, which was where she was when the runner arrived, having been at the gap’s current position conducting the morning’s observation of the widening’s most recent increment.

The runner handed her a folded document.

She opened it.

The handwriting was not Fenwick’s. It was smaller and more deliberate in the quality of someone who had learned to write as a functional instrument rather than an expressive one, the letters formed with the precision of the person for whom the writing was the form of the accurate notation rather than the form of the individual voice.

The document was three pages.

It was not signed with the name, which she understood in the form of the choice rather than the oversight, the choice being the form of the communication that did not carry the weight of the title because the title was not the form the communication required.

She read it once.

She folded it and held it for a long time at the valley’s northern edge, with the gap in the suppression’s architecture expressing itself in the mana’s movement above her and the autumn’s particular quality in the air and the runner waiting in the patient form of the person who had understood that the delivering was the function and that what the delivery produced in the recipient was the recipient’s own.

She read it again.

The document described what the staff had shown the person who had received it. Not in the full form that the direct transmission had delivered, which was not the form available to the written document. In the form that the sustained thinking across six months had produced, which was the form of the understanding that could be communicated rather than the form of the direct transmission that had produced the understanding.

The alien civilization. The imprisonment called divine law. The consumption ongoing in the four remaining territories. The signal in the staff, encoded for the civilization’s own accountability structure. The people outside the universe who had been waiting for the evidence of the violation.

She held the document in the autumn air and understood what the new quality in the root network had been, the quality she had been reading since the second month of the spring without the framework to name its source.

The signal.

The staff had been transmitting since Amari received it, in the form available to the object that was the instrument of the transmission, moving through the mana’s system in the ambient quality of the signal rather than the directed form, reaching the root network in the valley through the mana’s connective architecture in the form she had been reading as the faint quality of the system receiving information from a source outside its immediate architecture.

She had been reading the signal for six months without understanding what she was reading.

She sat down at the valley’s northern edge in the autumn cold and looked at the document in her hands and looked at the gap in the suppression’s architecture above her and looked at the root network’s quality in the soil around her, all of it present simultaneously, the three months of the botanical record and the six months of the daily practice and the winter’s gap-finding and the spring’s amplification and Solen’s map and the runner communication and the signal in the mana and the document in her hands and all of it, simultaneously.

She held the full form.

She did not feel triumph.

She felt the specific quality of the accurate understanding arrived at, which was the quality of the thing that was not comfortable and was not the resolution and was not the peace of the sufficient explanation but was the clarity of the genuine form of the condition, the clarity being the form available to the honest attention when the honest attention had been applied to the genuine condition long enough and the depth the building had produced was the depth the genuine condition required.

Something was still in the way.

Four gods in four territories, consuming the world in the slow form of the ongoing suppression, the consumption expressing itself in the ferns at eighty percent and the willowherb at seventy-three and the rivers running narrower than the maps and the granaries at two-thirds and all of it.

Something was coming.

The signal was moving through the mana toward the people outside the universe who had been waiting for it, in the form available to the transmission across the timeline the transmission required, and the people outside the universe were the civilization’s own accountability structure and the accountability structure arriving in the form it arrived in for a civilization of that advancement was not the form available to predict accurately from within this universe’s architecture.

She did not know what it would look like.

She knew the root network would tell her when it arrived in the form that the root network’s language described arrivals, which was the form of the change in the ambient quality before the change’s source was visible, the direction before the thing itself, the faint quality in the soil before the event in the air.

She would read it.

She folded the document and held it in her lap and looked at the valley below her, where Brother Solen and the seven monks were moving to the practice’s starting positions in the autumn morning’s light, the practice continuing in the form of the daily work, the increment accumulating in the direction of the return.

She thought of John saying Kiran’s name in the form that meant I see you, and she thought of Kiran’s hand in hers, and she thought of the high meadow and the root network in its original condition and the world as it had been before, and she thought of the old woman’s unhurried transaction in the market and the nine-year-old child, and she thought of the three letters in Amari’s jacket pocket, and she thought of the specific quality of the work that the long timeline required, which was the work conducted from the grief and the anger and the depth and the honest attention, in the form available at each stage, across the time the arriving required.

She stood.

The practice began.

She conducted her portion in the depth the journey had built, reading the root network’s quality in the specific language of the botanical and the mana and the covenant’s complete picture and all of it, the Uncos in the sharpness’s form finding the gap’s current edge and the signal’s ambient quality and the fern colony’s reach and the sedge’s relative abundance and the increment’s daily presence.

The valley received the practice.

The mana moved in the direction of the original condition, by the increment, through the morning.

She was the last of the three companions.

She had outlived everyone she loved.

She was reading the root network in the depth the journey had built, in the valley where the mana moved in the direction of the return, with the botanical record accumulating in the working tent and the document in her pocket and the signal in the mana and the gap widening by the increment above and all of it in the honest form of the continuing, none of it resolved, all of it real.
