Chapter 116: The Price of Both
The second god died on the eighth day.
The third died eleven days after that.
Between them, the world paid the price that the world paid when things that had been organizing it for four centuries ceased to organize it, the price being not the dramatic liberation of the theological texts but the specific quality of systems that had been running in a particular configuration for four hundred years encountering the sudden absence of the configuration’s primary administrators.
The mana moved.
Not in the responsive flow of the covenant’s original condition, which was what the restoration’s completion would produce across the decades of the work’s propagation. In the specific quality of the administered system losing two of its three primary architects in the span of eleven days, the routing that had been directing the flow away from living things and toward the divine system beginning to fail in the regions where the second and third gods had been the primary administrators, the failure not the restoration but the collapse, the specific quality of a managed system’s collapse when the managing ceased before the original condition was available to replace it.
The collapse produced weather.
This was the first expression, and it was the expression that the people who lived in the affected territories understood before they understood anything else, because weather was the form of the world’s communication that reached everyone regardless of their relationship to the institutional frameworks or the divine hierarchy or the declared conflict or any of the other forms through which the world’s current condition was being interpreted.
The Vethara Coast received storms that the coastal communities’ three generations of accumulated weather knowledge identified as structurally impossible at the current season, the storms not the storms of the seasonal patterns but the storms of a mana system whose routing had been disrupted and whose disruption was expressing itself through the atmospheric systems that the mana’s movement organized, the organized cloud cover of Varek’s combat manipulation multiplied to the continental scale and without the organizing intelligence behind it.
The Caldris Plain received drought.
The specific quality of a region whose agricultural calendar had been organized around the mana’s administered routing for four centuries, the routing having produced the rainfall patterns that the plain’s farming communities had built their entire relationship to the land around, the routing’s collapse meaning the rainfall patterns’ collapse, not through the divine suppression of the rain but through the removal of the organizing influence that had been routing the mana in the patterns the rainfall expressed, the rain now moving in the original patterns that the land had before the usurpation and that the plain’s communities had no agricultural knowledge of because the original patterns predated their institutional memory by four centuries.
The original patterns were not wrong.
They were different.
Different was sufficient to produce the specific quality of the communities watching their harvest projections dissolve across the nineteen days, the projections having been built on the patterns that no longer applied.
John understood what was happening before the runners confirmed it.
He understood it through the staff’s resonance in the aftermath of the third god’s death, the specific quality of the full resonance in a world where three of the seven gods had ceased to organize the mana’s routing, the resonance reading the mana’s movement across the continental extent and producing in the reading the specific picture of the administered system in partial collapse, the collapse being the consequence that the killings produced rather than the restoration that the killings were in the service of.
He sat with this in the forward camp’s primary room on the nineteenth day with Helena beside him and the runners’ confirmations spread across the table and the specific quality of the honest inventory directed at what the inventory contained.
"The gap," he said.
Helena looked at him.
"Between the administered system’s collapse and the original condition’s restoration," he said. "I understood it as a transition. A period of disruption while the mana returned to the responsive flow." He looked at the runners’ documentation, the coastal storms and the plain’s drought and the two other regional disruptions that the confirmations described in the flat quality of accurate information. "I did not understand the gap’s scale."
Helena was quiet for the interval of the honest processing.
"Yeva said the primary three die and the four dependent are significantly weakened," she said. "She did not say what the three dying would do to the routing before the weakened four could reorganize it."
"No," John said.
"Did you ask."
He looked at her.
"No," he said.
The documentation lay between them in the specific quality of information that was accurate and whose accuracy was the precise nature of the problem, the coastal communities and the plain’s farming calendar and the atmospheric disruption and the world paying the price of both the divine conflict and the political war simultaneously without understanding either.
He held this in the full weight without the management.
The world had been diminished for four centuries.
The restoration required the administered system’s removal.
The administered system’s removal was producing the gap, and the gap was producing the coast’s storms and the plain’s drought and the two regional disruptions and whatever else the runners had not yet confirmed, and the world was in the gap experiencing the specific quality of a transition that had not been prepared for because the preparation for it had not been possible within the knowledge available at the journey’s planning stages.
He had not asked Yeva.
He held this alongside the nineteen days and the three gods’ deaths and the full weight of the specific consequence that the killings had produced in the world the killings were in the service of restoring, the consequence and the purpose occupying the same space without canceling each other, each present and each real and neither made more comfortable by the other’s presence.
The second god’s death had been the most costly of the three.
Not in the scale of the disruption it produced, which was the third’s disruption at the continental level that exceeded the second’s. In the scale of what it required to produce it.
The god’s name was Thessan, second of the primary three, administrator of the eastern and central territories’ mana routing, present in the world for a span that Yeva’s knowledge had placed at six centuries and some portion of decades beyond John’s age of existence.
Thessan had been briefed.
This was the distinction between the first engagement and the second, the distinction that John had identified in the Aldenmoor Heights’ aftermath as the thing that would make the second engagement different from the first. The primary three had understood, after Varek’s death, what the staff actually was. They had understood the constraint the full resonance could produce in the ambient space. They had understood that the covenant’s original condition, expressed through the staff in the geometry that concentrated the covenant’s mana in the stone at depth, removed the non-physical dimension that the divine presence navigated through.
Thessan arrived prepared for the constraint.
The second engagement lasted four hours and twenty minutes, which was twenty-three times the first engagement’s duration, and what the four hours and twenty minutes produced in John’s body and the staff’s resonance and Helena’s Uncos and the earth manipulation’s deployment was the specific quality of things that had been conducting themselves at the maximum available intensity for four hours and twenty minutes and were approaching the limits that the maximum intensity produced when sustained for that duration.
The staff’s resonance had depleted twice.
Not to the absence, which would have ended the engagement’s possibility before the engagement’s conclusion. To the specific level that the sixth trial had first produced in the staff’s warmth, the level that was prior to the complete form, the interior glow burning at the height of the fuel’s partial consumption rather than the full resonance’s total warmth.
Both times, Helena had been the instrument of the restoration.
She had read the mana in the northern territories’ root network through the vines extended into the engagement’s terrain, the mana in the incremental return to the responsive flow that the first god’s death had begun, and she had directed what the Uncos in the sharpness’s form could direct toward the staff’s depleted resonance, the direction being not the transfer of the mana from the root network to the staff, which was not available to the Uncos, but the specific quality of the sharpness’s form reading the mana’s natural movement and positioning John within the movement so that the staff’s resonance could draw from the responsive flow’s returning quality rather than from the administered routing’s residual supply.
She had done this twice in four hours and twenty minutes with the Uncos at the maximum available intensity.
After the second restoration, she had conducted the Uncos in the sharpness’s form for the remaining forty minutes of the engagement without the managed quality, the management having been the thing that the Uncos expended first when the maximum intensity was sustained for the duration that the four hours and twenty minutes required.
The engagement concluded in the specific quality of things that had been conducted correctly at costs that were precisely the costs the correct conducting required.
Thessan’s dissolution expressed itself in the central territories’ mana routing losing its primary administrator, the routing beginning its partial collapse in the regions the second god had organized, the collapse adding to Varek’s partial collapse in the northern territories and producing between them the combined disruption that the runners had been confirming across the subsequent days.
John had spent three days rebuilding the staff’s resonance from the depleted form.
Helena had not told him what the forty minutes without the managed quality had cost.
He had not needed her to tell him.
He had the genuine seeing.
The third god’s name was Auren.
The theological texts had the most to say about Auren, which was consistent with the pattern the journey had established, which was that the information the institutional frameworks provided was most abundant for the things the institutional frameworks most misunderstood. The texts described Auren as the divine presence most directly associated with the covenant’s usurpation, the god whose particular capacity had made the routing’s installation possible at the original moment four centuries prior.
Yeva had been more precise.
Auren’s specific capacity was not the atmospheric manipulation that Varek had used or the mana redistribution at the large scale that Thessan had organized the central territories around. Auren’s capacity was the specific quality of the divine presence that could move between the physical and the non-physical dimensions without the transition that the other gods required, the movement being not the repositioning that Varek had used to avoid the covenant’s constraint but the simultaneous occupation of both dimensions, the divine presence fully present in the physical geometry and fully present in the non-physical dimension at the same moment.
The constraint that had produced the first two killings was not available against Auren.
John had known this since Yeva’s second knowledge-sharing, which had been the knowledge-sharing that had produced the information about Auren’s specific capacity alongside the information about the four dependent gods’ reorganization timeline in the aftermath of the primary three’s deaths.
He had not told Helena or the assembly before the third engagement.
He had told them the morning of it, in the flat quality of the accurate information delivered in the form the information required, and he had received Helena’s response, which was not the surprise of someone encountering new information but the precision of someone receiving a confirmation of what the genuine seeing had been reading in his quality across the days between Thessan’s death and Auren’s engagement.
She had said: "You have been planning for it."
"Yes," he had said.
"Tell me," she had said.
He had told her, and telling her had produced the specific thing that the third Forgotten Place had required and that he had been practicing since, which was the genuine reliance rather than the strategic inclusion, Helena and Oryn and Daven and the assembly not deployed into the plan but part of the plan’s thinking, the thinking organized around what each of them could do rather than what John could do with their assistance.
The third engagement required something different from the first two.
The constraint that had worked for Varek and Thessan worked by occupying the ambient space with the covenant’s original condition and removing the non-physical dimension’s availability. Against Auren, who occupied both dimensions simultaneously, the constraint produced the half-result, the physical dimension occupied by the covenant’s condition and the non-physical dimension still available to the divine presence that was in both.
The plan that the planning had produced was the plan of the two constraints simultaneously.
The staff’s full resonance expressing the covenant’s original condition in the physical dimension.
The monks’ original practice expressing the covenant’s original condition in the non-physical dimension, the original practice being the practice that the institutional split had preserved in the form that Brother Solen and the sixteen monks had been refining across the nine months of their presence in the assembly, the refinement having produced, in the seventh month, the specific quality that Solen had described to John as the practice in the full form rather than the preserved form, the difference being the difference between a piece of music played from the notation and the same piece played by someone who had played it long enough to understand why each note was where it was.
The original practice in the full form occupied the non-physical dimension in the way that the staff’s resonance occupied the physical one.
Against a god who occupied both simultaneously.
The engagement lasted six hours and forty minutes.
What the six hours and forty minutes produced in the world was the thing that John had understood and had not been able to prevent understanding, which was the understanding that the cost of the correct action was the correct action’s cost and that the correct action’s cost was not diminished by being the correct action’s cost.
Oryn held the terrain’s structure across the full six hours and forty minutes with the earth manipulation at the level of someone who had been developing the specific capacity for centuries and who was sustaining it at the maximum available intensity for a duration that the maximum intensity had not been sustained for in his operational history.
At the three-hour mark, the earth manipulation at maximum intensity for three hours began to express itself in the terrain, the geological record of the engagement’s location receiving the sustained force of centuries-old earth manipulation at maximum intensity in the form that sustained geological force expressed itself in terrain, which was through the specific quality of the land conducting itself differently than it had been conducting itself before the three hours.
The foothills’ eastern face produced a new ravine.
Not the catastrophic collapse of a geological feature, which would have been the dramatic form. The specific quality of stone that had been receiving the sustained force of the earth manipulation for three hours expressing the force’s accumulated effect in the form of the land’s adjusted organization, the ravine being the earth’s honest response to the sustained pressure rather than the earth’s failure to resist it.
The ravine was thirty meters long and four meters deep and would be present in the terrain’s record for whatever span of time the geological record preserved it, which was the span that geological features were preserved in, which was longer than the institutional memory and longer than the administrative record and longer than any of the frameworks through which the people who lived in the foothills’ territory understood their relationship to the land.
At the four-hour mark, Brother Solen’s sixteen monks conducting the original practice in the full form for four hours began to express the practice’s sustained quality in the ambient space of the engagement’s location in the form that the original practice in the full form expressed itself in sustained application against a divine presence that was actively resisting the expression.
Two of the monks withdrew from the formation.
Not from the incapacity of defeat, which would have been the form the institutional frameworks understood. From the specific quality of someone who had been conducting something at the maximum available intensity for the duration that produced the honest limit, the honest limit being the thing that the maximum intensity revealed when it was sustained for sufficient duration, the limit present in the two monks’ withdrawal as the form of the accurate inventory rather than the failure of the attempt.
Brother Solen continued with fourteen.
At the five-hour mark, John directed the staff’s full resonance at Auren’s physical dimension presence while Helena directed the Uncos in the sharpness’s form at the root network’s quality in the engagement terrain, the specific positioning that the second engagement had established as the method of maintaining the staff’s resonance against the depletion that the sustained expression produced.
She was conducting the maximum available intensity of the Uncos in the sharpness’s form for the second time in eleven days.
He received this through the genuine seeing without the management.
At the six-hour mark, Auren was in both constraints simultaneously for the first time in the engagement’s full duration, the physical dimension occupied by the staff’s covenant expression and the non-physical dimension occupied by Brother Solen’s fourteen monks in the original practice’s full form, the two constraints together producing the specific geometry that the planning had identified as the geometry that was available against a god who occupied both dimensions simultaneously.
The geometry held for forty minutes.
Forty minutes was sufficient.
Auren’s dissolution expressed itself differently from the first two.
Varek’s dissolution had been the organized cloud cover dissolving and the temperature restoring, the atmospheric systems returning to the natural pressure-driven movement. Thessan’s dissolution had been the central territories’ mana routing losing its primary administrator, the collapse expressed through the mana’s movement in the eastern regions.
Auren’s dissolution was expressed in both dimensions simultaneously, which was the form of the dissolution of something that had been simultaneously present in both.
In the physical dimension, the engagement terrain’s quality changed in the specific way that the presence of something continuously present in the physical dimension for six centuries changed when it ceased to be present, the ambient quality of the air and the light and the mana’s movement through the living things in the terrain all shifting in the first minutes of the absence, not dramatically but in the incremental way that the removal of a long-present organizing influence expressed itself in the systems it had been organizing.
In the non-physical dimension, Brother Solen and the fourteen monks in the original practice’s full form felt the dissolution as the specific quality of the practice meeting the absence of the thing the practice had been sustaining itself against, the resistance that the six hours and forty minutes had required the practice to maintain itself in opposition to suddenly absent, the practice in the first moment of the absence conducting itself in the quality of the original condition with nothing opposing it, which was the quality that the practice had been building toward across the nine months and that the engagement had produced not as the intended outcome of the engagement but as the consequence of the dissolution, the practice finally in the space the practice had been designed for, the non-physical dimension without the divine occupation.
Solen stopped the practice.
He stopped it in the way that significant things were stopped when they had reached the point of their completion, which was without ceremony and without the performed quality of a conclusion but with the specific quality of someone who had been conducting something toward a particular state and had found, in the conducting, that the state had arrived.
He looked at John across the engagement’s terrain in the aftermath’s quality.
"The practice works," he said. He said it in the flat quality of the accurate report, the report being the assessment of the instrument rather than the statement of the remarkable, because to Solen the practice working was not the remarkable event but the confirmed hypothesis, the hypothesis having been maintained across four centuries of the split and the prior centuries of the original practice’s transmission.
"Yes," John said.
"We will need more monks for the remaining four," Solen said.
"Yes," John said.
The nineteen days’ full account arrived in the runners’ reports over the subsequent week, each confirmation adding to the picture of the world between the three gods’ deaths and the four surviving gods’ reorganization.
The Vethara Coast’s storms had damaged four significant ports and eleven smaller ones, the damage being the damage of infrastructure built for the mana-organized weather patterns and encountering the disrupted patterns that the routing’s partial collapse produced.
The Caldris Plain’s drought had altered the harvest projections across the agricultural calendar’s most critical six weeks, the alteration producing the specific quality of communities understanding that the thing they had organized their calendar around was no longer operating in the form it had been operating in when they organized the calendar around it.
The Caldris Plain’s drought had not been purely the routing’s collapse.
This was the confirmation that arrived on the seventh day after the third god’s death, delivered by Sergei’s runner network in the form that made it legible as a thing distinct from the other disruptions, which was through the specific notation system that distinguished confirmed information from inferred information.
The Caldris Plain’s drought had been partly the routing’s collapse.
It had also been partly the Order.
Hans had been using the eastern campaign’s supply disruptions and the Liberators’ accumulated operational victories as the cover for the specific form of resource redirection that the declared conflict permitted the Order to conduct under the authorization of military necessity, the redirection being the redirection of the Caldris Plain’s agricultural output toward the Order’s logistical supply chain at the rate that the military necessity framework authorized.
The drought and the redirection together had produced the communities’ experience.
The world was paying the price of both.
John read the confirmation in the forward camp’s primary room on the seventh day with Helena beside him and the full account of the nineteen days spread across the table.
He held the complete picture: the three gods’ deaths and the routing’s partial collapse and the coast’s storms and the plain’s communities and the Order’s resource redirection under the military necessity authorization and the four surviving gods’ reorganization producing a tightened suppression in the territories they still administered as the response to the primary three’s absence, the suppression tightening as the capacity concentrated in fewer administering presences.
The tightened suppression in four territories against the loosened suppression in three.
The world altered in the specific way of a world in the gap between the administered system’s partial collapse and the restoration’s propagation, the gap being larger than the planning had assessed and smaller than it would have been if the planning had not been conducted at all, both of these things true simultaneously and neither canceling the other.
He looked at the confirmation about the Caldris Plain and held it alongside the routing’s collapse and the plain’s communities and the seven-year-old daughter Reiss’s wrong night had left without a father and the twenty-two names from the hub engagement and the thirty-seven from the Belrath Corridor and all the other costs that the war’s full account contained, the world paying the price of both the divine conflict and the political war simultaneously without the framework to understand either.
Helena looked at the confirmation’s notation and was quiet for the interval that the honest processing required.
"The four remaining gods are organizing the tighter suppression," she said.
"Yes," John said.
"In four territories."
"Yes."
"While three territories are in the routing’s partial collapse."
"Yes."
She looked at the table’s surface in the quality of the genuine attention organized around the complete picture rather than any single component of it.
"The rightful holder," she said.
He looked at her.
"The person without Uncos in the city you have already been in," she said. "The staff’s actual destination." She held his gaze with the genuine seeing. "The restoration’s completion requires the staff in their hands. Not yours."
"Yes," he said.
"The tighter suppression in the four remaining territories will be the condition the rightful holder faces when you reach them," she said. "Not the three gods’ absence. The four remaining gods’ concentrated presence."
John held this.
The restoration’s completion required the staff in the hands of the person it belonged to, the person without Uncos who had been in the same city as John in the journey’s early months and who did not know they were waiting. The staff in the rightful holder’s hands would complete the covenant’s circuit in the form that the seventh Forgotten Place’s knowledge described, the circuit being the form through which the restoration would propagate from the completed covenant to the mana’s full system, the propagation requiring the rightful holder because the covenant had been made with the world through the living things continuous with it and the restoration required the form of that original making, a person without the Uncos’s mediation, continuous with the world in the direct form.
The four remaining gods would be organizing everything they had toward preventing that completion.
"How long," Helena said. "To reach the city."
He looked at the route’s northern section on the map that the forward camp’s wall displayed and calculated the distances in the form of the operational assessment rather than the conceptual one.
"Forty days," he said. "Through the tighter suppression."
She received this.
"Then we have forty days," she said, in the flat quality of the accurate statement that was also the form of the continuing, the form that was available when the complete picture had been received in the full weight and what remained was the work.
She stood.
She went to read the root network’s morning quality through the vines, because the root network was the work and the work was what the forty days required in the form of the action rather than the form of the sitting-with, the genuine seeing having produced the complete picture and the complete picture requiring the action as the honest response to it.
John remained at the table for the interval that the honest sitting-with required.
Then he followed.
Outside the forward camp, the world conducted itself in the quality of the gap, the northern territories with the loosened suppression and the coast with the storm damage and the plain with the drought and the four remaining territories with the tighter suppression and all of it in the specific quality of the world in the nineteen days after three of the gods who had been organizing it for four centuries had ceased to organize it.
The world did not understand what was happening.
It understood the storms and the drought and the military redirection and the tighter suppression’s expression in the mana’s quality in the living things, each understood in the form available to the people experiencing it, which was the form of the immediate quality rather than the form of the complete picture.
The complete picture was in the forward camp’s primary room on the table.
The world outside the camp was paying the price of the complete picture without access to it, which was the price the world paid in every significant transition, the price of the gap between what was happening and what the available frameworks could contain of what was happening.
John understood this.
He held it in the inadequate framework alongside everything else the inadequate framework was currently holding, and he walked out of the forward camp’s primary room into the morning’s quality, and the morning received him in the way that mornings received people, conducting its own nature through the available hours.
He had forty days.
He walked toward them.
