Chapter 115: No Adequate Framework

The Forward Camp — The Night After, Then the Road — Four Days

Helena told him at the camp’s edge when he returned from the primary engagement.

She told him in the flat quality of accurate information delivered in the form the information required, without the elaboration that the elaboration would have added to protect the recipient of the information from the information’s full arrival. She had learned this from the months of the journey, the specific quality of the direct form as the honest form, the honest form being the form that honored both the information and the person receiving it rather than the form that honored the comfort of the delivery.

She said: "Kiran died this afternoon. Secondary route. Wrong configuration."

John received it.

He received it in the quality of the complete reception, the management not organizing it into the portion that was comfortable to receive, the full arrival being the form the reception took when the management was not the instrument.

He said nothing.

After a time, she went into the camp.

He remained at the edge.

He had been alive for six centuries.

This was the fact that the six centuries had produced in him most completely, not as the philosophical condition of the long life or the accumulated wisdom of the long experience but as the specific condition of someone who had been present for an accumulation of losses that exceeded the quantity that the human instrument had been designed to hold and that he had been holding anyway, across the six centuries, in the form that the only available container for quantities exceeding the container’s design produced, which was the form of the carrying without the fully adequate framework.

He had never developed an adequate framework.

This was the thing the six centuries had confirmed in the specific way that sustained evidence confirmed things, which was not through the single decisive instance but through the accumulated quality of all the instances together pointing consistently in the same direction. Each loss had arrived at the framework he had developed from the prior losses and had exceeded it in the specific way that the new thing exceeded the framework built for the prior things, the framework being always the framework of what had already been held rather than the framework of what was about to need holding.

The six centuries had given him the understanding that the adequate framework was not available.

Not through the failure of the attempting. Through the specific quality of what loss was, which was the thing that was prior to the framework rather than the thing that the framework could contain, the framework being always the container built after the thing had arrived and been held in the insufficient form of the not-yet-built container, and the building being the process of learning the shape of the thing that had already arrived, so that the container built from the learning was always the container for the thing that had already been held rather than the thing that was coming.

The coming thing always exceeded the container built for the prior thing.

This was not the failure of the six centuries.

It was the honest form of what the six centuries had been.

He stood at the camp’s edge and received the specific loss in the form that the specific loss required, which was the form of this loss rather than the form of any of the prior losses, the specific quality of Kiran rather than the category of the significant loss.

The amber eyes in the full depth of the genuine engagement, both the wolf and the human present simultaneously.

At the second hour, the grief arrived in the form it arrived in after six centuries of the inadequate framework.

Not the dramatic form, which was the form the grief had taken in the early centuries when the framework had still been attempting to be adequate and the gap between the attempt and the thing had expressed itself in the dramatic form of the gap. The quiet form, which was the form the grief took when the framework had stopped attempting to be adequate and had become the honest container of the inadequate holding rather than the failed container of the adequate attempt.

The quiet form was not the lesser form.

It was the form that six centuries of the inadequate holding had refined into the most honest expression of what the grief was, which was the full weight of the specific person absent from the specific place they had occupied, the weight not the weight of the category but the weight of the person, Kiran, the amber eyes and the management and the promise and the stream and the seven months and the right shoulder and all of it.

He held it in the quiet form.

The grief and the weight and the inadequate framework holding what it could hold and the rest present anyway, held in the honest form of the thing exceeding the container, the exceeding being the honest form rather than the failure.

He thought about Tomas.

Not in the way he had been thinking about Tomas across the nine months, which was the way of the memorial version, the weight of the monastery’s losses organized within the journey’s framework. The direct way, the specific person, the quality of Tomas’s attention in the morning practices and the specific quality of his conviction about the covenant’s worth and what Tomas would say about standing at the camp’s edge in the foothills at the second hour of the night after Kiran’s death.

He thought Tomas would say something practical.

He thought Tomas would say: The grief is the honest form. The honest form is the form the work is conducted from. Conduct it from there.

He thought Tomas would say this in the flat quality of the accurate statement and would then return to whatever the morning’s work required, because Tomas had always understood that the work was not the alternative to the grief but the form the grief took when the grief was the honest form and the honest form required the continuing.

He received this from the memory of Tomas in the quality of a gift from someone who was no longer present to give it directly, which was the specific form of the gift that the dead gave to the living, not through any mechanism that the theological texts described but through the simple quality of the living person carrying the specific quality of the dead person’s thinking and finding it available in the moments that required it.

He conducted it.

On the second day, he walked.

John walked in the foothills’ early morning quality and held the increment alongside the grief and the inadequate framework and the second day and the work’s required form, all of it in the full weight without the management.

He did not arrive at the resolution.

The resolution was not the form the honest holding produced. The resolution was the form the managed version produced, the version that organized the grief and the loss and the inadequate framework into the comfortable form that the resolution could be said to have arrived at.

The honest holding produced the continuing.

Not the continuing that was the alternative to the grief but the continuing that was the form the grief took when the honest form was the primary form and the honest form required the action rather than the management.

He continued walking.

The terrain continued its quality around him, the foothills’ specific geography in the early morning’s light, ordinary and specific and conducting its own nature through the available hours in the indifferent way of things that were larger than what occurred within them.

On the third day, he understood what he shared with Helena.

He understood it not through the conversation, which had not occurred in the form of the direct account of the parallel, but through the quality of her presence in the camp’s morning, the specific quality of the genuine seeing received from the person who had also been conducting the genuine seeing from within the grief’s honest form.

He had been watching her across the three days with the honest attention.

After a time, John said: "The increment."

"Yes," Helena said.

He said: "He was part of it."

She did not respond immediately.

She held the statement in the quality of the genuine receiving, the full arrival rather than the managed reception, and what the full arrival produced in the holding was visible in the specific quality of the nothing that preceded the response, the nothing being the form of the full reception rather than the form of the not-receiving.

"Yes," she said.

John looked at the soil where the vines were extended and the ki perception was reading alongside them and held the yes and the increment and the full account of the three days in the inadequate framework and the specific quality of what he had recognized in Helena’s sharpness.

He said: "I have been arriving at the same form."

He said it in the flat quality of the accurate statement, the statement that was the account of the recognition rather than the direction of the account toward Helena for her reception of it, the distinction being the distinction between the statement about the self and the statement organized around the other person’s response to it.

Helena looked at him with the genuine seeing.

She received what the genuine seeing produced, which was the full quality of the person beside her in the form they were in on the third day after the loss, the inadequate framework and the grief and the anger’s precision and the internal orientation and the sharpness all present in the quality of the person rather than as the explicit content of the speech.

"Different route," she said.

"Yes," he said. "Same destination."

The morning held them in its quality, the camp’s eastern edge and the foothills’ terrain and the root network below and the mana in the incremental return and the two of them reading it side by side in the ambient form of the two instruments and the shared space.

"The second engagement," Helena said. "Seven days."

"Six now," John said.

"Yes," she said. "Six."

She retracted the vines from the soil in the carrying configuration and stood with the sharpness and the grief and the anger and the internal orientation, all of it present in the quality of the standing.

He stood alongside her.

They turned toward the camp and the operational day’s requirements and the six days and the second engagement and the work’s continuing form, in the formation of two that the months and the loss had produced, the formation carrying what the formation could carry and the carrying being what the work required and the work being what the honest form of the grief required when the honest form required the action rather than the management.

He walked beside her.

The formation continued.

On the fourth day, he said Kiran’s name in the form that the third Forgotten Place had produced.

He said it alone, before dawn, at the camp’s northern edge where the ki perception read the foothills’ ambient quality in the specific form of the early morning before the operational day’s requirements arrived.

He said it once, in the flat quality of the genuine acknowledgment, without the elaboration that the name could have been organized into and without the direction of speech that would have required a recipient in the present form to direct it toward.

He said it in the form that was available.

The name in the form that meant I see you, said into the early morning’s quality with the inadequate framework and the six centuries and the grief and the increment and the work’s continuing form all present alongside the name in the honest form of the holding.

The morning received it in the way that mornings received things, which was with the ordinary quality of the time before dawn conducting itself toward the dawn, indifferent to the weight of what had been said into it and specific in the quality of the space where the saying had occurred.

He held the saying in the quiet form.

Then the dawn came.

He turned toward the camp and the fourth day’s requirements and the five remaining days to the second engagement and the formation of two and the work’s continuing form, and he walked into the dawn’s arriving quality with the inadequate framework carrying what it carried and the grief in the honest form and the sharpness that six centuries had built into the grief’s honest form across all the prior instances and that this instance was adding its specific quality to, the specific quality of this loss in this person in this configuration of the wrong moment at the wrong interval.

The staff was warm against his back.

The warmth was the total warmth of the full resonance, present and interior, the covenant’s original condition expressing itself through the instrument in the form that the seventh Forgotten Place had confirmed was the complete form.

He carried it.

He had been carrying it for nine months in the form the carrying required, which was the form of the work conducted from the honest form of the grief and the anger and the inadequate framework and the full weight and the world-healed answer primary in the place it needed to be primary.

He carried it into the fourth day.

The day received him in the way that days received people, which was by continuing its own nature through the available hours, the light arriving at the specific angle of the season and the terrain and the hour, ordinary and specific and carrying none of the weight of what was being carried through it.

He continued.

It was the only form available.

And the only form available was the form the work required, and the work was what the continuing was in the service of, and the service was the form of the honest honoring that the genuine honoring of the specific person required, the honoring being not the memorial form but the form of the work that the person had been part of and that the work’s continuation was the form of the person’s being-part-of-it continuing in the soil and the root network and the increment and all of it.

He walked into the fourth day.

The foothills held their quality around him.

The mana moved through the living things in the responsive flow’s incremental return, the world slightly more itself than it had been, conducting the ordinary quality of a world trying to return to itself through the small available means, through the things that could carry the covenant’s quality forward in their cellular structure, through the Forgotten Places and the practices and the work and the people who had been part of the work and whose being-part-of-it continued in the form of the increment.

The increment was small.
