Chapter 85: One Month
The next day arrived as expected.
It was now the third day, and Amon had barely 25 days left before the calamity arrived.
The goal was supposed to be simple, as always.
Head out, clear the dungeons, and continue levelling up.
However, on this day, Amon finally encountered an issue.
A devastating issue that could ruin every plan he had...
After clearing the third SS-rank dungeon for the day, Amon stood atop a high mountain, his brows drawn into a frown.
’What the hell is happening?’
Ever since he started killing dungeon monsters that morning, he’d encountered an issue.
’I can no longer gain experience?’
Amon frowned as he glanced at the surrounding monsters.
With a swing of his hand, he unleashed a devastating sword attack that claimed the lives of more than a hundred of them.
However, glancing at his EXP, it remained exactly the same.
’What’s going on?’
At first, he hadn’t noticed it.
Only after clearing the second dungeon did he realise the issue at hand and the fact that he hadn’t levelled up as expected.
Then, he knew something had gone wrong.
Amon thought for a moment, sifting through his memories, but was unable to arrive at an explanation.
The sky was still bright, and it was only ten in the morning, so he had enough time to figure out what was happening before returning to his family.
After pondering for a bit, Amon’s thoughts moved at lightning speed, and he immediately acted, using Close Yet So Far to breeze through the monsters ahead.
In the blink of an eye, a dense, suffocating smell of blood spread throughout the dungeon, and an eerie silence settled over the place.
Amon glanced around one final time before taking out the dungeon compass.
’The SS-rank dungeons are thinning out...’ Amon muttered to himself.
SS-rank dungeons were terrifying enough to destroy a small country.
It was completely reasonable that there weren’t many in existence.
After clearing more than forty SS-rank dungeons over the course of three days, only two remained. Beyond them lay the mysterious intense red light.
’And the dungeon where Mira’s sister is trapped... I wonder if it’s the same place...’
Amon pondered for a moment but couldn’t reach a conclusion.
He decided to set the thought aside and head to the next dungeon.
If the issue still persisted, he’d have to meet the Watcher.
The mysterious old man who seemed to know many secrets pertaining to the world. He should likely have an understanding of the matter at hand.
With that in mind, Amon’s thoughts moved at lightning speed, and he immediately made his move.
Swoosh!
In an instant, space gave way, and Amon was nowhere to be found.
Amon appeared before a vast expanse of snow.
Ahead was a swirling portal. However, to his surprise, a blurry figure stood just outside it.
Amon’s brows beneath the Ataroth Mask shifted in surprise as he stared at the mysterious man.
He had only just thought of coming to meet him, and the man was already here.
The Watcher stared at Amon and let out a faint sigh.
"Your rate of progress is truly astronomical, its as though you have no bottlenecks at all."
Hearing his words, Amon’s brows furrowed.
Bottlenecks? What were those?
Noticing his confusion, the old man was startled.
"You truly have no bottlenecks."
He muttered to himself, then his expression shifted slightly as a pang of regret flashed across his face.
"How unfortunate."
"Normally, after hunting monsters, our bodies need time to adapt to the increase in strength before we can continue killing monsters. Killing too much can cause an oversaturation of mana, leading to our death. However, your case is completely different. You can grow stronger indefinitely."
He frowned for a bit, then said in an even, regretful tone,
"Unfortunately, it seems your journey of growth has come to an end."
"What do you mean by that?" Amon asked in a deep voice, hiding his curiosity.
The old man seemed to know why he couldn’t level up anymore, and he was curious about the exact reason.
"As you might have guessed, it has to do with the coming calamity. At birth, everyone’s restricted to SSS-rank. No one can surpass that limit no matter how many monsters they kill. If you were born somewhere else, perhaps you’d be able to surpass the limit, but..."
The old man’s words trailed off.
Amon’s expression shifted in understanding.
"This is part of the reason you asked me not to challenge fate?" he asked.
The old man nodded.
"Being unable to surpass SSS-rank, yet having to face gods, will only lead to one’s destruction."
"No matter the level of skills you gain, they will stay limited to SSS-rank. Gods, on the other hand, possess God-Ultimate Skills, which is something we can’t compare with. It’s impossible to defeat them."
Hearing the man’s explanation, Amon paused for a moment before nodding.
"Thank you for the information."
The old man noticed Amon’s calm tone and was taken aback.
"What are you going to do now?" he asked curiously.
"Nothing much." Amon replied simply and turned around, about to use Close Yet So Far.
"Why don’t you come to the Watcher’s Tower with me while we wait for the coming calamity? I can feel it’s closer than ever before. It would be nice to spend time with someone before my life finally comes to an end along with this era."
Amon paused slightly, and the wind gently brushed against his leather jacket.
"I have important matters to attend to, so I can’t entertain you."
With those simple words, he vanished, using Close Yet So Far.
The old man pinched his fingers slightly, using one of his unique SSS-rank skills.
’I still can’t sense his location...’
He frowned slightly, then glanced up at the skies.
In his line of sight, he could already see a thin, hairline fracture stretching across them.
’It’s only a matter of time before this era ends. I wonder what the next era will be about...’
The wind blew gently, and he vanished similarly without a trace.
...
Thousands of metres away, Amon appeared back at Cold Moon District.
The mask was gone, and so was the leather jacket.
A thoughtful look appeared on his face.
His initial goal was to keep killing monsters while signing in, hoping to obtain a treasure that would help him escape the calamity.
’However, it seems that’s no longer feasible.’
I signed in today and didn’t receive the Ataroth Mask, so there’s no guarantee I’ll receive it every day.
’I’m also not sure it will be helpful in escaping the calamity. The only path now is fate points.’
Amon mulled it over for some time and realised that only fate points could increase the grade of his abilities, drastically boosting his strength.
Due to his fate points, he was able to match gods, so with the same fate points, he should be able to rival those above godhood.
’It’s worth a shot. It’s the only path I have now. I can’t rely on unstable sign-ins to protect my family. I need to be cautious with my decisions. It’s their lives at stake here...’
Amon pondered briefly and made a decision.
Taking a deep breath, he collapsed onto the top of the tower, sitting there as he gazed at the peaceful city below.
A melancholic feeling surfaced within his heart as he thought about what the future held...
