Chapter 112: Plan to Depart
The sound of the front door opening drifted through the quiet apartment.
A pair of weary footsteps followed.
Plastic bags rustled softly before coming to a stop somewhere beyond the hallway.
"We’re back."
Collete’s mother’s familiar voice carried through the house, sounding noticeably more exhausted than usual.
Kirby answered with a tired hum as the front door clicked shut behind him.
Amon slowly rose from the chair beside the window.
Collete glanced at him before lowering her gaze.
"...Let’s go."
Amon nodded and with that the two children left the room together, Collete pushing the wheels of her chair with practiced motions.
Compared to before, her movements were steadier, almost effortless.
The scent of freshly bought groceries lingered in the air as they entered the sitting room.
Kirby was placing vegetables on the small kitchen counter while Collete’s mother sorted through several bags beside him.
The couple looked over almost simultaneously.
The moment they saw both children together, they smiled instinctively.
"You finally woke up."
Kirby walked over before crouching beside Collete. He’d come earlier to check up on oner only to discover that she was sleeping.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, touching her head. It was unlike her to sleep during the day.
"I’m okay." Collete replied calmly.
"Any headaches?"
"A little earlier... but they’re gone now." Collete said after some thought.
Kirby let out a relieved breath.
"Good."
He gently rubbed her hair before standing.
For a brief moment...
The atmosphere felt peaceful.
Amon quietly watched the small family and a faint feeling stirred in his chest, as though there was something he couldnt particularly recall but at the same time had to recall...
Not giving it much thought he spoke, interrupting everyone...
"I’ll be leaving tomorrow morning."
The room instantly became silent as Kirby’s hand froze halfway toward one of the grocery bags.
Collete’s mother’s smile slowly faded as she stared at amon.
"...Leaving?" she asked.
Amon nodded.
"I’ve already stayed here long enough."
Kirby stared at him for several seconds before forcing out a small smile.
"You don’t have to rush. We don’t mind having you here, you can stay for as long as you need."
"I appreciate it." Amon’s voice remained calm as he said quietly. "But I have somewhere I need to go."
Hearing this words the two glanced at each other, then seemed to think of the same thing.
Seeing the look in his eyes, they guessed that amon had likely recovered his memory or something.
Collete’s mother quietly lowered her eyes and after some thought asked.
"You really have to leave?"
The few days that amon had stayed with them, she’d noticed her daughter regaining the liveliness in her eyes.
As a mother this was what she’d always wanted, so she couldnt just let him go and let her daughter fall back into her depressed state.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Tomorrow morning."
"So soon..."
Silence settled over the room once again.
Kirby scratched the back of his head before forcing out a laugh which suddenly stopped the moment collete spoke up as well...
"I’m going too."
Everything seemed to stop as Kirby slowly turned toward his daughter in surprise.
"...What?"
"I said..." She looked directly into his eyes. "I’m leaving with Amon."
The words were calm and there wasn’t the slightest hesitation behind them.
Kirby blinked in surprise before finally laughing.
"...Good one."
Seeing that nobody laughed with him, his smile gradually stiffened and he raised his voice ever so slightly.
"You... weren’t joking?"
Collete shook her head. "No."
"You can’t." Kirby’s answer came almost immediately.
"I can."
"No." His tone became noticeably firmer. "You are absolutely not going anywhere."
Collete quietly met his gaze and said in a small voice: "I’ve already decided."
Kirby’s brows furrowed and he couldnt help but reprimand in a stern tone. "Collete."
"I’ve already decided." She repeated the exact same sentence.
Her voice never rose. It remained soft and steady, yet somehow that only made it even harder to argue against.
Kirby looked toward Amon and asked with narrowed eyes: "Did you ask her to come with you?"
"No."
"Then tell her she can’t."
Amon remained silent for a moment.
"I didn’t ask her. But If she truly wishes to come... I won’t stop her."
Kirby’s eyes widened.
"You..."
He stared at the young boy in disbelief.
"What do you mean you won’t stop her?"
"She’s a child and so are you."
Neither child answered.
Kirby suddenly felt a headache coming on.
Fortunately, at that moment Collete’s mother finally spoke.
"Collete." her voice was much gentler as she asked "Why?"
The little girl lowered her head briefly before looking back up.
"I want to go." Collete replied in the same firm voice.
"That’s not an answer."
"It is."
"No, sweetheart."
Her mother slowly crouched in front of the wheelchair.
"You’ve barely ever left this district... you’ve never traveled. You need medicine. you need regular checkups. You..."
Her voice caught for a second but she forced herself to continue. "You need us."
"I know." Collete answered quietly. "I know all of that."
"Then why?"
Collete remained silent.
She couldn’t tell them the truth. She couldn’t tell them about the visions.
Not because she didn’t trust them. But because she knew even if she explained everything...
They would never allow it. They would even more so want to keep her at home to protect her safety... he parents were just those kind of people.
So after several seconds of silence...
She simply said, "I have to."
Kirby rubbed his temples. "No. It isn’t happening. I won’t allow it."
Collete looked at him.
"...I’m still going."
Kirby froze.
For the first time... he heard something unfamiliar in his daughter’s voice.
Resolve.
Not childish stubbornness or a passing whim.
Resolve.
It unsettled him.
His daughter had always been gentle.
Always willing to compromise... always hiding in the shell she seemed to have created for herself.
But today...
She didn’t move an inch.
Kirby slowly exhaled.
"Collete. I’m your father."
"I know." Collete replied.
"And I’m telling you no."
"I know."
"Then why aren’t you listening?"
"Because..." She lowered her eyes. "I can’t listen this time..."
Those words struck the room harder than shouting ever could.
Kirby opened his mouth to speak then slowly closed it again.
He had no answer.
He simply stared at his daughter.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t throwing a tantrum.
She was simply...
Certain.
That certainty frightened him far more than any emotional outburst could have.
From the side, Collete’s mother quietly watched the exchange.
She knew her daughter.
Better than anyone.
Collete wasn’t the type to insist on something without reason.
If she had reached this point...
Then there had to be a reason.
A reason she wasn’t saying.
Her gaze slowly shifted toward Amon.
The young boy stood silently, his expression as calm as ever.
He hadn’t interrupted once.
He hadn’t tried persuading Collete.
Nor had he attempted to convince them.
He merely waited.
As though the decision belonged entirely to the family.
That realization made her feelings even more complicated.
Kirby finally broke the silence.
"No."
His voice was quieter now.
"But my answer hasn’t changed."
"You are not leaving this house."
Collete gently tightened her hands around the wheels of her chair.
"...Dad."
"Please don’t."
His reply came almost immediately.
"I’ve already said no."
