Chapter 95: Chapter 95

Kyra’s POV

No! No! I couldn’t let anyone ruin my plans. Yes! I had expected this to happen, since I knew that Kieran and Nathan were both VIP guests at this event. I had planned for this moment carefully, but seeing the man I still loved standing in front of me with eyes full of happiness and longing made my knees weak.

"Kyra..." Nathan’s voice was barely a whisper.

I pushed him slightly away and forced my features into a confused expression, thankful for the special scent-blocking spray I’d been using since my return.

"I’m sorry, sir. Do I know you?"

"That’s it! You’re doing well, Kyra. You need to disregard your feelings for the sake of your freedom and your daughter’s safety. As long as Kieran is on the loose, you can’t guarantee your baby’s safety," Sylvia’s voice in my head praised me for pretending not to know Nathan.

And although it tore my heart apart, I had to do this.

"W-What?" He sucked in his breath, looking utterly shocked as he stared at me in disbelief. I could see him subtly trying to catch my scent, confusion crossing his features when he couldn’t detect my usual orange blossom fragrance.

I shook my head. "Are you one of the guests, sir? Are you okay? Do you feel sick?"

He shook his head. "No... No... This can’t be. I know you. Even if you’re wearing thick makeup, I know it’s you, Kyra."

I’m sorry, Nathan. I had to do this.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir."

I showed him my company ID. "My name is Elle and I’m the Hospitality Coordinator hired for this event. Would you like me to accompany you inside?"

He grabbed his hair in frustration, and I saw how a lone tear escaped his eye, which he immediately wiped away.

"Please, don’t pretend. I know it’s you, Kyra. I know you too well." His voice dropped lower. "But I can’t catch your scent... Maybe I’ve been searching too long, mistaking too many women for you. Maybe this time I’m wrong too."

Of course, he knew me too well. But the scent blocker was working.

I opened my lips to speak when someone came, interrupting us.

"Elle, I’ve been looking for you all over. Oh! Who is..." It was Mary.

"He mistook me for someone else, Mary. I’ll just accompany our guest here."

"Okay!"

After Mary left, I looked at Nathan again. Please, don’t make this hard for me, Nathan. I needed to put myself and my daughter—our daughter—at the top of my priority list.

He swallowed hard and took a deep breath. When he turned his back and covered his face with his hand, I caressed my chest where my heart was racing too much.

He looked at me again, and his eyes were lifeless. "I’m sorry. I just... I think I’m just tired. I must have mistaken you for someone else. I apologize for disturbing your work."

"Do you want me to accompany you inside, sir? We can prepare a private room so you can rest for a while."

He shook his head and grabbed his hair again. "I-I need to leave."

I just nodded as I watched him go. My heart was still racing, and as soon as I heard the door close, I squeezed my eyes shut and sucked in my breath.

I wiped the tears that rolled down my cheek. It was so hard to pretend not to know him when all I wanted was to hug him tightly as soon as I saw his face.

After calming myself down, I went back inside and did everything I could not to run into Kieran. If I saw him up close, I didn’t know what I’d do. My emotions might explode, and I might ruin my own plans.

***

I was sitting on my swivel chair while writing a report when I received an email from my father’s lawyer.

A smile crept onto my lips as I read that the documents I requested were now being processed. The ownership of my dad’s mansion would be transferred to my name. More importantly, my petition to the Alpha Council to reopen the investigation into my father’s suspicious death had been accepted.

"First step complete," I whispered, feeling Sylvia stir with satisfaction inside me.

It had been a week since the auction event where I ran into Nathan, who immediately recognized me despite my disguise. I was able to get away, but I knew Nathan. He was intuitive when it came to me. I knew he wouldn’t completely dismiss his suspicions, so I had to accelerate my plans before he did something that could expose me.

I opened another email confirming my bank loan approval.

"Talk about a smart move," I whispered as I immediately transferred the money to another bank account owned by one of the shareholders of my dad’s company.

This was more than just business. This was about reclaiming what was rightfully mine: my father’s pack, the Raven Shadow Pack territory, and the Monroe legacy. I had meticulously bought shares from two major shareholders, bringing my ownership percentage above Kieran’s. This would automatically position me as the CEO, and even if some board members remained loyal to him, they wouldn’t be able to challenge my authority because I now held controlling interest.

The pack followed the strongest Alpha, but in the modern world, power wasn’t just about physical strength; it was about control of resources. With the company under my control, half the battle to reclaim my place would be won.

Besides, I knew Kieran would drive the company to bankruptcy, using its resources to fund his rogue activities. I had to stop that before it happened, not just for me but for all the pack members who depended on the Monroe Group for their livelihoods.

When I got home, Luke was sleeping on the couch with Snow sitting on his lap, also asleep.

I walked toward them and squatted beside the couch, gazing at my daughter.

Baby, your daddy might do something to feed his curiosity. I don’t know what to do.

"Miss Kyra..." Luke’s voice was soft as he woke up.

I gave Luke a smile. "You worked hard again."

The corner of his lips rose as he looked down at Snow sleeping in his arms.

"I didn’t get to enjoy a normal childhood because I was selected for warrior training so young," he said quietly. "Most young wolves get to play and develop slowly, but those of us marked for the Alpha’s guard are trained differently. My parents were so proud to have me chosen, but they became strangers to me. The pack became my family." He stroked Snow’s hair gently. "I’m happy that I’m able to fulfill my childhood wish while taking care of little Yuki."

"Why are you still single, Luke?" I asked, knowing that most wolves his age would be actively seeking their mates.

He shrugged his shoulders. "When you’re trained to protect others, forming attachments becomes... complicated. I don’t have time to date."

Well, should I set him up with Mary?

"I’ll carry her to bed."

I pulled myself up and nodded. "Yes, please. Thank you."

I walked him to the door. He faced me slowly and stared at my face as if he was contemplating something serious.

I waited for him to speak, and he did. "Miss Kyra... I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. I just...I’m just concerned."

I crossed my arms and looked him in the eye. I knew I wasn’t perfect, so I appreciated honest opinions.

"I know you’re raising her wonderfully. She’s lovely. She’s kind. She’s content with life having only you. But as a wolf who didn’t have a real connection with his parents, I can only say it’s hard..."

He took a deep breath. "Even though I had the pack, I still felt the absence of my true family. Wolves need their bonds; it’s in our nature. I had pack brothers and sisters, but I always felt the hole where my parents’ love should have been. They were alive, part of the same pack, but the distance was worse than if they’d been gone." His eyes met mine with gentle understanding. "Your daughter needs to know her father, her Alpha. She deserves to know her lineage. Without it, part of her wolf will always feel incomplete."

I stood by the door frame, completely stunned. Luke had already left, but I couldn’t move an inch.

I don’t know... Maybe I’ll consider giving Snow a chance to know her father once this is over. But for now, I can’t take the risk. I just can’t.
