Chapter 350: Awakening Jirachi
Rio’s eyes gleamed with interest. In his mind, he was already formulating a plan regarding Jirachi.
After a moment, the boy and his parents left the tent under the watchful gaze of the tailcoat man and the golden-haired woman. The boy’s mother asked to see the meteorite, but he refused and ran off.
But as soon as he stepped out of the tent, Rio appeared before the family, wearing sunglasses. The family looked at him in confusion.
"Excuse me, sir — can we help you?" the boy’s father asked hesitantly.
Rio smiled and snapped his fingers. The next moment, Old Ghost emerged from the shadow behind him, cackling at the family. The boy was startled and tried to run.
Rio looked at him and said: "I’m your dearest cousin. I’m your dearest cousin."
His words acted like hypnosis. The boy froze, and under Gengar’s psychic power, he was forced to turn and meet Rio’s gaze. His eyes gradually grew vacant. His parents were also startled and about to call for help — but Rio looked at them and said: "I’m your dearest nephew. I’m your dearest nephew. My name is Brook. My name is Brook."
Like the boy, the parents’ eyes grew vacant.
"Brook," the boy’s parents said in unison.
"Cousin," the boy also addressed him.
Rio smiled. "Can I hold that meteorite for a bit, cousin?"
"Here, cousin." The boy handed the brilliant meteorite to Rio.
Rio held it — the first thing he noticed was its warmth and comfort. It wasn’t cold like normal crystal at all, which surprised him.
"Jirachi," Rio murmured. But there was no response. He could only hand the meteorite back to the boy, then glanced at Gengar and snapped his fingers. The vacant look faded from the family’s eyes — but they still recognized Rio as their nephew and cousin.
"Cousin, I’m a pure-hearted boy — Jirachi’s partner!" Evan proudly showed Rio the meteorite.
"Great job." Rio gave him a thumbs up.
Then he spent the day with the family at the amusement park. That evening, the newly acquired aunt was drawn to a vendor’s stall.
"This is a Millennium Comet charm — it’s called the Wish Star, also known as the Seven-Night Wish Star. During the seven nights when the Millennium Comet is visible, make a wish and embed one star each night. After the seventh night, your wish will surely come true." The vendor explained the star-shaped accessory to the aunt. She immediately decided to buy it.
As soon as she did, fireworks lit up the amusement park — Pokémon-themed fireworks: Pikachu, Charizard, Chikorita — all sorts of Pokémon bursting across the sky.
"Look, Jirachi — fireworks! Pretty, aren’t they?" Evan said excitedly to the meteorite.
Rio watched from the sidelines, smiling at the boy’s pure expression. He remembered that Jirachi was especially fond of pure-hearted people. Evan’s behavior indeed displayed a child’s innocence and simplicity — sharing good things and beautiful sights with others immediately. Unlike Rio, whose first thought upon hearing "Jirachi" was capture — a clearly impure motive.
Two hours passed. The fireworks ended, and the amusement park visitors began to leave. Rio and Evan’s family lay on a nearby grassy field, gazing at the stars. They’d heard a comet would appear tonight, so they’d come here.
But after staring for a long time, they only saw dark clouds — no comet.
"Just clouds," Evan’s mother sighed.
"Looks like we might not see the comet," his father said regretfully.
"How can this be?" his mother complained.
Only Evan shifted his gaze from the sky to the meteorite in his arms. "Jirachi, let me hear your voice again." He pressed his ear against the meteorite.
Rio watched, moved by the child’s innocence.
A while later, the amusement park lights went out. As they dimmed, a gentle breeze suddenly blew, scattering the clouds. A white streak across the night sky was revealed, ending in a brilliant point of light.
"That must be the Millennium Comet!" Evan’s father exclaimed.
"I need to make a wish — for our family to always be happy!" His mother pulled out the Seven-Night Wish Star she’d bought and embedded one star as instructed.
As for Rio, he felt a pang of emotion. A thousand years for Jirachi was just a nap, but for humans, it was an eternity. Could he even live a hundred years?
Just then, the meteorite in Evan’s arms suddenly began to glow, interrupting Rio’s reverie. He turned — and a voice echoed in his mind.
"The star... the star is calling me." The voice was like a young girl’s — even more pleasant than Shaymin’s.
"Did you hear that?" Evan looked up in surprise.
"Was that Jirachi’s voice?" his mother asked.
"Telepathy, maybe?" his father guessed.
As he spoke, the meteorite in Evan’s arms floated up, glowing brighter and brighter, radiating waves of light. Then, all at once, the light faded — revealing a small Pokémon with a star on its head, looking like it was sleeping, floating gently in the air like a piece of paper.
Jirachi... Rio’s pupils contracted. He wanted to reach out, but seeing Evan already moving forward, he held back.
After Evan caught Jirachi, it opened its eyes. It looked around with an overwhelmingly cute expression.
"So this is Jirachi? So adorable!" Evan’s mother’s maternal instincts kicked in.
Jirachi glanced at her.
"My name is Evan," the boy introduced himself.
"Evan?" Jirachi looked at him.
"My name is Rio — you can call me Brook." Rio introduced himself in turn.
"I’m Evan’s mom."
"I’m Evan’s dad. Nice to meet you."
Evan’s parents followed.
Jirachi repeated their introductions: "Brook... Mom... Dad?"
Just then, the golden-haired woman from the morning performance ran over. She looked at Jirachi in Evan’s arms, clearly shocked.
"Miss Diane, look — it’s Jirachi! It’s Jirachi!" Evan said proudly.
"I’ll go get Butler. Wait for me in my car." Diane gave Jirachi one last deep look before running off.
Fifteen minutes later, inside a recreational vehicle...
"Jirachi, grant my wish!" Evan looked at Jirachi with childish earnestness.
"Wish?" Jirachi tilted its head, confused.
"Yeah — let me think what I should wish for." Evan stared at the ceiling, daydreaming.
"Grant my wish too!" his mother chimed in.
"I want one too." Rio smiled, joining in.
But Evan shot him a glare. "I’m first!" he huffed, then made his wish: "I want lots and lots of snacks!"
"That’s it?" His mother looked disappointed.
"What’s wrong with that?" Evan grumbled, then looked at Jirachi. "You can do that, right?"
"Snacks?" Jirachi tilted its head in thought. Then it closed its eyes, floating up — the three streamers on its star-shaped head began to glow. After two seconds, the glow faded and everything returned to calm.
"It seemed to glow just now," Evan’s mother said in surprise.
"But I don’t see any snacks..." his father said, confused.
"Forget it — I wasn’t really expecting it to come true. You guys actually believed that?" Evan suddenly turned his head away, pretending it was nothing.
"Oh please — you were the one most excited about it!" His mother rolled her eyes and exposed him without mercy.
Evan blushed, about to argue — when something suddenly appeared in his hand. He looked down — a bag of chips. Then Jirachi began floating midair, repeatedly calling out "Snacks! Snacks!" as the three streamers on its head kept glowing. One bag after another of snacks began raining down from the sky.
"They’re coming! The wish came true!" Evan’s parents exchanged bewildered looks.
"You’re amazing, Jirachi!" Evan cheered excitedly. His praise only made Jirachi summon snacks even more enthusiastically.
Rio watched and sighed. He knew how Jirachi’s wish-granting ability worked — it couldn’t create things from nothing; it could only teleport existing objects. So the snacks continuously falling were all stolen from some vendor, teleported here.
After a while, when everyone realized just how many snacks there were, the RV was completely stuffed, forcing them all outside. Just then, Diane and Butler arrived. They stared in shock at the pile of snacks and Jirachi.
"What did you do?" Diane asked in confusion.
"Jirachi granted my wish! It made all these snacks appear!" Evan said proudly.
Diane picked up a bag of snacks and inspected it. "This looks like the snacks sold at our amusement park," she noted.
"Just as I thought — Jirachi has the ability to teleport matter," Butler said, smiling at Jirachi.
"So those snacks..." Evan’s father caught on quickly.
"Then we’ve caused a big problem!" His mother also realized.
"Evan! It’s all because of your wish — figure out a solution!" she glared at her son.
"Easier said than done..." Evan hugged Jirachi, looking troubled.
"Jirachi can return things to where they came from," Rio offered.
"Right!" Evan’s mother nodded. "Jirachi, put everything back!"
"Put back?" Jirachi tilted its head at her, then brightened: "Put back!" The three streamers glowed again.
The next moment, Evan’s mother vanished, startling everyone.
"Jirachi, where did you send my mom?!" Evan panicked.
But then a cry for help came from behind — his mother was stuck in a pile of snacks. Evan’s father and Rio rushed over to help her out.
"I’m so sleepy..." Jirachi suddenly grew drowsy and fell asleep.
Evan looked helplessly at Butler. "Is Jirachi going to sleep for another thousand years?"
Butler smiled and shook his head. "It’ll sleep for a thousand years after seven days. Right now, it’s just resting after using its power."
"Thank goodness..." Evan sighed in relief.
"It’s not good at all!" His mother, now rescued, was furious. "What are we going to do with all these snacks?!"
"We’ll just carry them back and return them to the shop owner ourselves," Evan’s father said.
"Leave it to me — I’ll have my Pokémon take care of it." Rio released Gengar.
"Old Ghost, help me out."
Gengar rolled its eyes at Rio but used its psychic power to levitate all the snacks. The appearance of this Gengar made Butler turn his attention to Rio.
"And who is this?" Butler asked, puzzled. He hadn’t seen this Gengar trainer during the day.
"I’m Evan’s cousin — call me Brook. I had an upset stomach during the day and missed your magic show." Rio introduced himself.
Hearing he was the cousin, Butler nodded and said no more.
Time passed — the next day.
Since they were staying for seven days, Rio and Evan’s parents decided to pass the time by helping Butler with the performances. Evan took Jirachi to play around the amusement park.
But on the second night, a Pokémon broke in — Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. It lunged at Evan, but Butler subdued it using the amusement park’s machinery and his Kirlia’s Hypnosis.
"Jirachi said Absol came to greet it — I heard its voice," Evan said after it was subdued.
"Greet it? Is Absol Jirachi’s partner?" his mother asked.
"Is that true, Jirachi?" Evan asked Jirachi in his arms.
But Jirachi had grown drowsy again, ending the topic.
"You all take Jirachi to rest — you’ll know once it wakes up," Butler said. The group exchanged glances, nodded, and left.
As Rio left, he glanced at the hypnotized Absol, then at Butler — and smiled.
