Chapter 320: A New Legend Appears (Part 1)
It was incredibly fast. And during its charge, Rayquaza’s form underwent another transformation—it was growing longer. Its green scales began to gleam like emeralds, and golden, ribbon-like protrusions appeared on its upper and lower horns and tail tip.
Facing this overwhelming presence and pressure, Mewtwo raised its right fist, ready to counter with Focus Punch—using offense as defense. But Rayquaza’s Dragon Ascent was just too fast. The moment Mewtwo’s Focus Punch was about to be thrown, the Mega Evolved Rayquaza was already upon it. With a whoosh, it grazed past Mewtwo, leaving a significant wound.
"This is getting troublesome for Mewtwo." Inside the Indigo Plateau venue, Rio muttered through his binoculars as he watched Rayquaza successfully land Dragon Ascent and severely wound Mewtwo.
Meanwhile, Mega Rayquaza retreated into the clouds. The ozone layer groaned above. Its emerald-and-gold dragon form darted through the sky, casting brilliant aurora-like light. Each time it moved, it left cloud trails like claw marks, turning the sky above Indigo Plateau into an ionized hell with solar storms.
This was Mega Rayquaza’s ability: Delta Stream. Under this airflow, the entire Indigo Plateau—and surrounding Kanto and Johto regions—had their electronic devices disrupted, rendering them useless. The livestream of the tournament was cut off.
"Make sure the Elite Four evacuate the crowd safely." Rio instructed his secretary Serīna from the guest room, then ascended into the sky with Gengar.
Above, Mewtwo X cast a cold glare at Mega Rayquaza, hovering a kilometer high. Psychic blades materialized under its will, slicing through the clouds and sparking against Mega Rayquaza’s jade-like scales.
Mega Rayquaza responded with Dragon Rush. The emerald-and-gold dragon shadow, wreathed in fury, dove straight down.
"RAY~" — Die, little one! You’re no match for me!
Mega Rayquaza roared as it descended. Mewtwo X crossed its muscular arms, and a white barrier rose from its feet, enveloping its body. It used Protect, preparing to withstand the devastating impact and find a counter-opening.
"Shadow Ball—rapid fire!"
At that moment, Rio’s voice reached its ears—a different approach. Mewtwo turned to see Rio ascending through the sky under Gengar’s psychic protection.
"Gengar~" — Can you handle it? If not, I’ll take over.
Gengar taunted. Mewtwo ignored the mockery and considered Rio’s suggestion. It retreated at high speed, creating distance while forming Shadow Ball after Shadow Ball in its hands. After crafting six, it hurled them at Mega Rayquaza’s Dragon Rush.
The collision produced a massive explosion. Two seconds later, a dragon claw adorned with golden patterns emerged from the smoke, sending Mewtwo X flying.
BOOM—!
Mewtwo X took the hit. Mega Rayquaza had seamlessly followed Dragon Rush with Dragon Ascent. Under the cover of the six Shadow Balls’ explosion, it had created a hundred-meter-wide afterimage trail. The ion storm, combined with the energy from the torn ozone layer, turned the sky into a deathly glow.
But Mega Rayquaza wasn’t done—it turned and charged at Gengar. However, Gengar, already prepared, had turned its body into black mist. When Mega Rayquaza’s Dragon Ascent passed through, Gengar manipulated time—though against Mega Rayquaza, its time power could only slow it down several times, allowing it to break free.
"RAY~" — What was that?
Mega Rayquaza looked back at the mist in confusion. It couldn’t understand how it had sensed time power within that black cloud.
"Gengar~" — Legendary Rayquaza, care to fight me instead?
Gengar’s head emerged from the mist, cackling. But before it could do more, Mewtwo appeared above it.
"Back off. It’s my opponent alone." Mewtwo’s gaze was cold, still refusing to give up despite its injuries.
Gengar rolled its eyes at Mewtwo, then called out to Rayquaza:
"Gengar~" — Rayquaza! Beat it to a pulp! Then fight me so I can beat you!
Rayquaza stared at Gengar, then at Mewtwo, and finally at Rio.
"Kid, every time we meet, you really do surprise me." Last time they met, the kid only had Articuno and a Charizard that could use Sacred Fire. A year later, he had a Psychic-type Pokémon capable of wounding it, and a Gengar that could control time. It was almost frightening. If they met any later, this kid might even be able to subdue it. Good thing it came early—or disaster might have struck.
"Does that count as a surprise to you?" Rio smiled after hearing Rayquaza’s telepathy. If he told Rayquaza now that Lugia had already become his Pokémon, would its jaw drop?
"What do you mean? Isn’t this already surprising enough?" Rayquaza looked at him strangely.
"If you think so, then sure." Rio didn’t explain further—it probably wouldn’t believe him anyway. Better to capture it first.
"Mewtwo, stop using X Form. You’re clearly more comfortable with Y Form." Rio suggested.
Wounded, Mewtwo heard Rio’s words and, under Rayquaza’s stunned gaze, reverted from X Form to its base form, then glowed white again.
"It can evolve again?" Rayquaza, rather than interrupting, spoke to Rio in astonishment.
What a laid-back opponent, Rio thought. If it were him, he’d interrupt without hesitation—even if surprised.
"That’s right. You’re about to face the form it’s most accustomed to." Rio smiled.
As he finished, Mewtwo evolved into its Y Form—the form with the strongest psychic power. In Y Form, Mewtwo used Recover, and its wounds rapidly healed before their eyes.
Rayquaza’s eyes widened as it felt a powerful psychic presence emanating from this newly transformed creature—a sense of unease rising within it.
"Mewtwo, Psychic." Rio commanded calmly.
The newly evolved Mewtwo Y obeyed. Invisible psychic waves burst from its body in overwhelming force, causing Mega Rayquaza’s emerald scales to crack. Countless rocks rose from the ground below and shot toward Mega Rayquaza like bullets.
Mega Rayquaza cried out in pain. It gathered Dragon Breath in its mouth and unleashed it, reducing the rocks to dust. As the beam swept toward Mewtwo, Mewtwo used Extreme Speed, vanishing from its path.
Rayquaza’s expression hardened as golden light enveloped its body—it was using Dragon Ascent again. It charged straight at Mewtwo. Facing this assault, Mewtwo Y—now faster than its X Form—chose to race Rayquaza in speed. It dodged upward, and the two resumed their chase.
This time, Mewtwo not only fled with Extreme Speed but also used its immense psychic power to horde countless rocks from below at Mega Rayquaza. But these attacks were useless against Dragon Ascent—the golden light around Rayquaza vaporized them on contact.
The result: neither could outpace the other. They were evenly matched in speed.
"Mewtwo, Psystrike—maximum output!" Rio called out again, seeing the stalemate.
Mewtwo Y raised its right hand. Dark energy rapidly gathered above its head, quickly expanding to a meter in diameter and still growing, accompanied by a terrifying pressure. Mega Rayquaza’s heart tightened—it knew this attack demanded its full attention, or it would be in serious trouble. It gathered Hyper Beam in its mouth.
Just as it was about to fire, Mewtwo Y’s Psystrike was complete—a dark energy sphere three meters in diameter. The sight made Rio think of one thing: the Spirit Bomb. Compared to Goku’s, Mewtwo’s was dark and less massive—but still devastating.
When it collided with Mega Rayquaza’s Hyper Beam above Indigo Plateau, the resulting shockwave dwarfed any previous clash. Part of the forest—including Viridian Forest—was caught in the blast. Countless rocks, once controlled by Mewtwo’s psychic power, were scattered by the Hyper Beam’s residual energy, falling as fireballs that ignited the forest. Bug-type Pokémon desperately tried to put out the spreading flames, but they couldn’t keep up.
High above, the battle continued. Both Mewtwo Y and Mega Rayquaza had taken damage from the shockwave, but neither would yield.
"RAY~" — I admit you’re strong, but you’re still far from matching me!
Mega Rayquaza stared at Mewtwo Y.
"I admit you’re strong too—but today, you will fall to me." Mewtwo Y hovered in the air, full of determination.
"RAY~" — We’ll see!
Mega Rayquaza attacked again, forming a golden energy sphere in its mouth and hurling it skyward where it exploded into countless golden meteors.
[Draco Meteor]
The meteors rained down on Mewtwo Y. In response, Mewtwo Y raised its hand and released Psychic—a psychic storm that slowed the meteors’ descent, gradually turning them to powder. But the storm didn’t last long—because the golden streamers on Mega Rayquaza’s forehead began glowing, absorbing Mewtwo’s psychic energy and feeding it back out, enhancing the falling Draco Meteor.
The burning meteors broke through the stratosphere, trailing red flames as they fell. Mewtwo Y was caught off guard—it had never encountered such a situation before.
Seeing this, Rayquaza was pleased and let out a roar.
"RAY~" — Here’s a secret: my golden streamers after Mega Evolution are designed specifically to counter Psychic-types like you. They can absorb non-corporeal psychic power and use it as my own. I don’t use it often, but that doesn’t mean I can’t.
Mewtwo’s expression darkened. It was forced to rely on Extreme Speed and Teleport to dodge the relentless meteors. As it dodged, Mega Rayquaza seized an opening and suddenly charged forward with Dragon Tail, aimed at Mewtwo Y. The speed and power generated a deafening sonic boom—but just 0.001 seconds before impact, Mewtwo Y managed a desperate Teleport to safety.
Mega Rayquaza silently regretted the miss. Mewtwo Y breathed a sigh of relief, continuing to dodge the remaining Draco Meteor. One hit from that would have left it on the brink of defeat.
But Mewtwo Y’s successful dodge spelled disaster for the creatures of Viridian Forest. One after another, Draco Meteor struck the forest, and the Pokémon there couldn’t withstand the onslaught. Countless Pokémon fled, carrying their young. Rio, who had been watching from the sidelines, finally noticed the calamity. He turned to see the forest engulfed in flames and was horrified. He was about to send Gengar to extinguish the fire—but then, a new anomaly appeared in the sky.
The ozone hole suddenly filled with seven-colored rainbow light. A wing burning with eternal sacred flames parted the ionized clouds. Rainbow radiance began to shine upon the world.
"This is..." Rio’s expression shifted—his instincts told him a legendary Pokémon of great significance was about to join this battle.
