Chapter 319: Mewtwo vs Rayquaza (Two-in-One)
A powerful pressure suddenly descended upon the battle arena at Indigo Plateau.
Crash! Crash! Crash!
Countless windows shattered simultaneously. It was like a scene from the apocalypse—the Charizard and Gyarados that had been battling paused in confusion, looking up nervously at the sky. They could feel a terrifying presence spreading down from above.
"What’s happening? What’s wrong with the sky?"
"Did you hear that roar? I swear I heard a dragon’s roar!"
"Look! There’s something moving in the clouds!"
The audience panicked, chattering in fear. On the guest platform, Kanto’s Elite Four rose to their feet, staring at the sky in confusion.
"What is this? It feels like a legendary Pokémon is about to descend." Ghost-type Elite Four Agatha, ever knowledgeable, muttered as she leaned on her cane.
"Ho-Oh? Or Lugia? Only they could project such pressure." Flying-type and Dragon-type Elite Four Lance said in confusion. "What could possibly attract them to the Rio Tournament today? Or are they here to congratulate us?"
"Congratulate us? That would be a bit much, wouldn’t it? If they’re here for that, Rio’s influence must be enormous." Fighting-type Elite Four Bruno chimed in.
"Mr. Rio, what do you make of this?" Agatha asked as Rio approached.
"What do I make of it?" Rio looked up at the darkening sky.
Is Rayquaza coming? Rio thought to himself. Rayquaza’s ability was Air Lock, which negated all weather effects. The weather had been sunny earlier because someone had used Sunny Day—the sudden change wasn’t just the effect wearing off; it seemed more like it had been overwritten.
When Ho-Oh appeared, it was accompanied by rainbow-colored clouds—clearly not what was happening now. As for Lugia, that bird and its big baby were both his Pokémon now—he would have known immediately if it were coming.
So the only possibility was Rayquaza. Besides the Air Lock ability, he had heard dragon roars from the clouds, and he suddenly remembered that the one-year deadline with Rayquaza had already passed. It made sense that Rayquaza would come looking for him.
Just as Rio was thinking this, a brilliant aurora burst through the dark clouds. Then an emerald serpentine form emerged from the sky, stunning everyone inside and outside the Indigo Plateau venue.
"Rayquaza! Hoenn’s guardian deity, Rayquaza! Why would it come to Kanto?" Agatha’s pupils trembled with disbelief. The other three Elite Four members were equally shocked. The audience began to panic as well.
High above, Rayquaza scanned the venue with piercing eyes. It had expected Rio to be at the Pokémon Association in Goldenrod City, Johto. But when it arrived in Johto, it found that wasn’t the case. Following the signal of the emerald orb fragment, it had flown all the way to this crowded venue.
Where is that kid? Rayquaza scanned the arena. Finally, following its senses, it spotted a young man behind a glass window, smiling up at it.
"RAY~!"
A deafening dragon roar echoed across the venue, shattering the glass in front of Rio. Shards flew toward him—but were stopped midair by a psychic force. Behind Rio, Mewtwo had emerged from its Master Ball on its own, staring up at the sky with fighting spirit.
In Rio’s mind, Rayquaza’s voice rang out:
"Kid! What’s the meaning of this? You promised to destroy the Pokémon Association, the Devon Corporation, and the Belari Family within a year! Why are you sitting here watching Pokémon battles?"
Rio glanced around. The Elite Four and League officials nearby showed no signs of having heard anything—Rayquaza’s telepathy was for him alone.
"Tell Rayquaza this isn’t the time or place to talk. Ask it to leave for now—I’ll contact it personally tomorrow." Rio stepped back and whispered to Mewtwo, voice low enough for only them to hear.
Mewtwo received the command and looked up at Rayquaza. But either it conveyed the message wrong, or Rayquaza refused to wait—it opened its mouth and began gathering a Dragon Rage, as if ready to destroy everything.
Seeing this, Rio had no choice—he shouted to Mewtwo: "Stop it!"
A look of delight crossed Mewtwo’s face. It had been waiting for those words. The next second, it vanished from the guest room and reappeared a hundred meters in the air, face to face with Rayquaza, an Aura Sphere already forming between its hands.
Rayquaza was surprised to see an unknown Pokémon confronting it—but it held nothing back, unleashing its Dragon Rage. Mewtwo hurled the Aura Sphere.
The two moves collided above the venue, creating a massive shockwave. The result was a draw.
Rayquaza was stunned. It never imagined one of its attacks would be blocked by a Pokémon it had never seen before.
"RAY~" — Who are you?
Rayquaza demanded. A Pokémon capable of blocking its attack was worthy of having its name known.
"Mewtwo." Mewtwo replied telepathically.
"RAY~" — Very well, Mewtwo. I’ll remember your name. But let me make this clear—no one can stop me when I’m enraged. Since Rio dared to deceive me, he will pay the price.
Rayquaza lashed its tail, unleashing a storm of ionized energy toward Mewtwo. Mewtwo immediately Teleported to the edge of the stratosphere, eyes cold as it gathered an Ice Beam aimed at Rayquaza’s dragon weak point.
Rayquaza scoffed at the attack. It folded its wings and shot forward with explosive speed—using Extreme Speed. Like a streak of green light, it pierced through the Ice Beam and closed in on a caught-off-guard Mewtwo, its horn piercing Mewtwo’s left shoulder, causing purple genetic fluid to scatter like stardust.
"Can Mewtwo handle this? Should we go up and help?" Flying-type Elite Four Lance watched with concern as Mewtwo took damage.
"Don’t rush. I believe in Mewtwo." Rio reassured him.
The truth was, Mewtwo hated it when others interfered in its one-on-one battles. If Lance or Rio jumped in now, Mewtwo would be furious—unless it was truly overwhelmed and couldn’t go on.
High above, Rayquaza began circling, using Dragon Dance, forming a plasma hurricane. Mewtwo erected a Psychic shield—but under the hurricane’s assault, it began to crack like a spiderweb. As Rayquaza’s speed increased, the cracks multiplied. Just as the shield was about to shatter, Mewtwo Teleported away again, creating distance. Then it raised both hands and formed a pitch-black energy sphere—far more powerful than an Aura Sphere. This was Mewtwo’s divine move: Psystrike.
Rayquaza met it with a Dragon Tail. The dragon energy and psychic power collided in a massive explosion that toppled trees across Indigo Plateau. Wild Pokémon fled in terror. Weak Pokémon and frail humans were knocked unconscious.
The tournament venue itself was spared—shrouded in black mist. Old Ghost had acted under Rio’s command.
"RAY~" — Impressive, Mewtwo. Even I took some damage from that last attack. But that alone isn’t enough.
Rayquaza tumbled through the air, gathering a new attack. It opened its mouth, forming a golden sphere of energy and hurling it skyward.
[Draco Meteor]
The Draco Meteor soared into the storm clouds and exploded like Arceus’s Judgment, raining down countless golden meteors. Mewtwo weaved through them with Teleport, calculating its next move.
Finally, it found an opening. As it dodged the last of the meteors, it created a psychic rift behind itself. With its left hand, it formed an Aura Sphere to shatter an incoming meteor. With its right, it sent a powerful psychic wave into the rift.
[Future Sight]
After completing that, Mewtwo flew into the roiling clouds. Rayquaza followed closely. Mewtwo smirked and used Blizzard, freezing the moisture in the clouds into ice crystals. Then began a game of cat and mouse—Rayquaza’s vision and speed hampered by the frozen mist.
The chase lasted about half a minute—until the unexpected happened.
A dimensional rift suddenly opened beside Rayquaza, releasing a surge of psychic power that struck its weakest point—causing emerald blood to seep from between its scales.
"So, am I still ’not enough’ in your eyes now?" Mewtwo stopped, hovering in the clouds, smirking at Rayquaza.
Rayquaza was furious. Enraged, it churned the clouds and used Hurricane, forming tornadoes that shredded the ice crystals into blades.
Mewtwo’s eyes narrowed. It used Psychic to seize control of the ice blades, reversing them to barrage Rayquaza’s emerald body with wounds—enraging the dragon even further.
The two resumed their high-speed chase at the boundary between the ionosphere and the stratosphere. Psychic and dragon energies flickered in the space between them. During one clash, Rayquaza, consumed by fury, used Outrage. Under that berserk attack, Mewtwo took a beating—soon knocked out of the clouds and back into Rio’s view.
"RAY~" — You’re still far from matching me!
Rayquaza looked down from the clouds at Mewtwo, purple genetic fluid spilling from its wounds.
Mewtwo looked back, wiping the blood from its body. Far from yielding, its fighting spirit only burned brighter.
"And what if I fight you like this?"
Mewtwo’s body blazed with white light—it was about to Mega Evolve.
Rayquaza’s pupils shrank. It hadn’t expected this Pokémon called Mewtwo—which it had never seen before—to possess another evolution. And like itself, it seemed to be able to control it freely.
After the white light faded, Mewtwo’s form had transformed completely—from a humanoid Pokémon into a muscular, power-packed figure.
"Mewtwo X." Rio smiled through his binoculars from the guest platform.
This was the Psychic/Fighting-type Mewtwo X. In its X Form, Mewtwo locked eyes with Rayquaza—then vanished. No—it was running through the air at blinding speed, closing the distance with a clenched fist.
With 190 base Attack, Mewtwo’s punch materialized into a solid fist wind. Rayquaza, caught off guard, tried to retreat—but its speed was now far behind Mega Evolved Mewtwo X.
Mewtwo’s left fist crackled with Thunder Punch, its right blazing with Fire Punch. Both slammed into Rayquaza, leaving scorched fist marks across its dragon body before sending it crashing into the clouds with a pained roar.
And it wasn’t over. Mewtwo X tore through space, appearing above Rayquaza’s head. Its right fist glowed with the dark-red aura of Focus Punch.
Rayquaza tried to block with Dragon Claw—but against Mewtwo X, a specialist in Fighting-type power, its claw was outmatched. Dragon scales flew, and the attack nearly shattered its claw.
Rayquaza was livid—fury like never before building within it.
"RAY~" — You think you’re the only one who can transform?!
Rayquaza roared as golden light erupted from the core of its tail, spreading toward its front. The triangular pattern on its forehead gleamed. Then, with its body straightened, it charged straight at Mewtwo X.
