Chapter 210: Communication
Ye Jun sat quietly beside them, his hands resting on his knees. Inwardly, his sharp mind wanted to intervene, to speak up and offer immediate comfort to soothe the raw vulnerabilities of the two women he cherished. But he forcefully held himself back.
He knew exactly how incredibly valuable and rare this specific moment was, and he didn’t want to ruin it with a clumsy interruption.
In this world, harems were a dime a dozen among powerful cultivators. But those arrangements weren’t families. In the vast majority of cases, those setups were either cold, calculated political transactions, or simply a powerful man collecting beautiful women like rare artifacts to satisfy his own ego. In those structures, the women never truly got along; they lived in a perpetual state of masked hostility, plotting behind each other’s backs and fighting for crumbs of attention.
But his case was fundamentally different. His relationship with them was built on genuine, mutual affection. He wanted his home to be a true family. Song Liangxue and Meihui were already close; they trusted each other and considered themselves sisters. But that shared bond didn’t magically erase their internal insecurities, their personal fears, or their natural jealousy. They were human, after all.
Therefore, moments like these, where they openly communicated their hidden burdens, laid bare their rawest fears, and handled the friction between themselves without any filters, were absolutely critical for the foundation of their future. These were internal boundaries that they had to navigate and resolve on their own, as equals, to truly cement their bond.
The carriage rolled silently through the quieter paths, the soft rustle of the wind filling the space as both women stared at each other, the heavy weight of their mutual confessions clearing the air like a sudden draft driving away stale smoke.
Only when the two of them had completely calmed down, looking at each other with a sudden, faint realization of how utterly stupid their hidden rivalries had been in hindsight, did Ye Jun finally choose to intervene.
He reached out, his large, warm hands smoothly wrapping around both of their wrists, pulling them slightly closer to his frame. His expression was soft, his usual bold, lazy grin replaced by a look of absolute, grounded security.
"Are the two of you finally finished measuring your shadows?" Ye Jun asked, his voice steady and deeply comforting. He looked directly at Meihui first. "Meihui, look at me. What the world sees right now is nothing more than a temporary cover. I don’t care if the people think you’re a maid, a concubine, or an outsider. To me, your weight is identical to Liangxue’s. Your sacrifice is written into my heart, and no public ceremony will ever change that."
Meihui’s eyes softened, the lingering tightness in her chest dissolving completely under his direct focus.
Turning his head, Ye Jun looked at his fiancée, his fingers gently tracing the back of her hand. "And you, Liangxue. Stop overthinking dead variables. If I was the type of bum to leave my partner just because someone else showed up early, I wouldn’t have survived the purple lightning. You are my anchor in the North, and your trust is the very reason I can stand boldly in this palace."
Both women looked at him, their expressions completely relaxed as the residual walls of insecurity crumbled into nothingness. Of course, the future held many unpredictable things but they were confident in facing it together.
Seeing that the emotional crisis had been successfully averted, Ye Jun’s shameless, humorous nature instantly bubbled back to the surface. He leaned back against the fur cushions, a lazy smirk pulling at his lips as he glanced between them.
"Though, if I’m being completely honest... hearing two of the most beautiful women on this continent list out exactly why they are desperately obsessed with me is a fantastic ego boost for me," he teased shamelessly, winking at Meihui. "Please, don’t let me stop you. Continue listing my charms. I have all afternoon."
The tender, emotional atmosphere vanished in an instant.
Song Liangxue’s brow twitched. Meihui’s shy expression immediately flattened into a cold glare. Unfortunately for Ye Jun, his attempt to exploit the harem dynamic completely backfired. The two women didn’t turn on each other; instead, they instantly joined hands against him.
"You really are a shameless rogue, aren’t you?" Meihui clicked her tongue, snapping her hand fan open with a sharp sound.
"I believe the victory in the arena has made his head a bit too heavy, sister," Song Liangxue agreed smoothly, a dangerous smile returning to her face as she leaned closer to Meihui. "Perhaps we should ask Mother to double his training she’s planning to give him during the family lunch."
"An excellent suggestion," Meihui nodded, completely ignoring Ye Jun’s sudden, helpless expression.
After a short round of unified bantering that thoroughly put Ye Jun back in his place, the carriage began to ascend the final, quiet pathways leading back toward the palace gates. Meihui settled back into her seat, her curiosity returning as she recalled the initial trigger for the conversation.
"But seriously, Liangxue," Meihui asked, looking at her. "Why did you drag him back so abruptly from the plaza earlier? We barely spent an hour browsing the storefronts."
Song Liangxue sighed softly, her expression turning slightly annoyed as she recalled the scene at the dueling ring. "I told you, I didn’t like how the women in that crowd were looking at him. It wasn’t just simple admiration. They were staring at him like hungry beasts, as if they wanted to devour my husband right then and there on the ironstone."
She rubbed her temples, a look of genuine surprise crossing her face as she analyzed her own behavior. "It made me incredibly angry and possessive at the same time. It actually surprised me. Usually, I am completely confident and bold about these things. I know my status, and I know my strength. I never thought I would be the type of person to get flustered over common spectators staring at my partner."
Ye Jun watched her, his expression softening as he reached out, gently patting her shoulder.
"That’s because you’ve been bottling things up for too long, Liangxue," Ye Jun said, his voice quiet and insightful. "Many times, we don’t realise it ourselves. You have your clans responsibility, the issues with your Physique affecting your emotions, this strange dynamic of our relationship, heck even the Convergence and the Lord. So many things have happened."
He leaned closer, his gaze warm. "The next time you have anything to say, or the next time you feel a bit jealous or uncertain, just say it out loud. Communication is very important between us. We are a family now, and you don’t have to carry a flawless front when you’re sitting inside my carriage."
Song Liangxue looked at him, her dark eyes reflecting his image beneath the soft, falling snow. The lingering tightness in her shoulders completely vanished, replaced by a deep, unshakeable sense of peace. She leaned her head lightly against his shoulder, her fingers tightly interlocking with his.
"Alright," she whispered softly against his robes. "I’ll hold you to that promise."
Ye Jun smiled and embraced both of them.
