Chapter 708: Chapter 679: Love in a Parallel Universe [001]
Introduction:
This volume is another side story, still about Candy’s story. However, in this story, the background has been changed – Quentin Thorne married Melinda Linton years ago, and Candy became Quentin Thorne’s only daughter. She excelled in both character and academics and was a PhD in law from Harvard. After graduation, she continued working as a lawyer. The setting is almost the same as in the main text, but in this story, Candy grows up in a happy family, so her personality will be slightly different, as one’s growth environment shapes their character. In this story, her personality will be more adorable and lively.
Other changes are due to Ian Grant not marrying Quentin Thorne back then, and Melinda Linton also not marrying Felix Raines, so characters like Mina Thorne and the Raines Family won’t exist.
Everything about the male lead Simon Forrester and the Forrester Family’s situation remains the same as in the main text.
Now, let’s begin this magical Chapter – see how the pride of the Thorne Family, Sienna Thorne, falls in love with Director Forrester, who appears cold but is actually very warm!
——
Brimfield New District
In the scorching August summer, the blazing sun baked the earth, as if it were about to melt everyone.
A crowd had gathered at the construction site, with police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks ready and waiting.
On the top floor of a high-rise building where most of the exterior scaffolding had been dismantled, a short, dark, and plump man was crying and shouting loudly.
"I’m going to jump! Don’t try to stop me! That heartless developer is withholding wages! My son is lying in the hospital waiting for this money to save his life! The heartless developer just won’t pay! I’m going to jump from here!..."
Firefighters had set up an air cushion below, and two police officers were trying to approach the person threatening to jump.
"Don’t come any closer! If you do, I’ll jump!" The man roared in despair, his voice hoarse, tears and sweat mixing on his face.
The two police officers took a step back and whispered to each other, "Has his lawyer arrived?"
"Notification has been sent; she’s on her way."
"Follow up again."
"Understood."
The police officer stepped aside to make a phone call, while another officer cautiously approached the man threatening to jump. Just as he was about to speak, a voice came through his Bluetooth headset from the command center: "The lawyer has arrived. Should we let the lawyer come up?"
The officer lifted his hand to indicate pause and said to the man, half hanging over the railing, "Mr. Wang, please hold on. Your lawyer is here now. You can tell your lawyer whatever demands you have, and we will do our best to cooperate."
The man, who had been attempting to jump, paused.
The officer seized the opportunity to ask, "Do you want her to come up?"
The man nodded nervously, "Yes, yes! I want to see the lawyer! Let her come up quickly!"
"Alright." The officer watched the man warily and used his earpiece to inform the command center to let the lawyer come up.
.
The construction site lift rattled and clanked as it carried people upwards.
"Is the contractor still refusing to pay wages?" Sienna Thorne was practically fuming, her voice rising, "How can they do this?! Mr. Wang’s son has leukemia and is waiting for money to transfuse platelets. Aren’t they driving people to death?"
The police officer standing next to her shook his head helplessly without a word.
It was so hot that her linen white shirt was soaked with sweat.
She had intended to file a lawsuit in court that afternoon, but midway through, the police called to say that a client from a legal aid case was threatening to jump from a building.
Fearing something might happen to Mr. Wang, she abandoned her plans to go to court and quickly took a cab over. Upon arrival, she learned that Mr. Wang was contemplating suicide due to the ongoing delay in receiving wages needed for his sick son’s treatment, which enraged her further.
Legal notices had been sent, and the court had also issued a summons to the contractor, yet they still hadn’t paid the workers. Was she going to have to confront their boss personally?
With a jolt and a bump, accompanied by a clang, the elevator reached the top floor.
The police officer opened the elevator gate and stepped out first. Sienna Thorne adjusted her orange safety helmet and followed him out.
The wind on the rooftop was so strong that it almost blew her slim body over. Pressing down on her safety helmet, she walked toward Mr. Wang, calling out, "Mr. Wang!"
The officer guarding Mr. Wang quickly said to the agitated Mr. Wang, "Don’t act rashly; the lawyer is here."
With her bag in hand and bracing against the strong wind, Sienna Thorne shouted loudly, "Mr. Wang, I’m here! Please, don’t act impulsively! I will help you get your wages!"
"Lawyer Thorne!" Mr. Wang wailed towards the sky, "My son is dying! I don’t have money to transfuse him with platelets! If they don’t get him the platelets, he won’t live past tomorrow! I have no other option! My son!..."
The strong wind dispersed Mr. Wang’s voice, but Sienna Thorne could still hear his desperation, and tears instantly rolled down her face.
She hastily wiped the tears with her hand and tried to get closer to Mr. Wang, soothingly saying, "It’s going to be okay, Mr. Wang! Come down first! I’ll take you to the contractor’s office! I know where their company is! I will seek justice for you! Come down first..."
"No! If I can’t get the money, there’s no point in living! I’d rather jump from here and die with my son!"
Sienna Thorne gritted her teeth, "Alright! Wait for me, I’ll call your boss right now!"
She took out her phone and dialed the contractor’s representative’s number, but despite several attempts, no one answered.
Seeing this, Mr. Wang became even more desperate and climbed entirely over the railing, ready to jump.
The air was thick with a sense of danger and impending death.
Sienna Thorne screamed, "No! Mr. Wang! Don’t jump! I’m going to find your boss right now! Wait for me!"
Hearing this, a glimmer of hope appeared in Mr. Wang’s eyes as he grabbed the railing once more.
Tears streaming down his face, he said to Sienna Thorne, "Lawyer Thorne, you’re educated, please beg them for me. If I can’t get the wages today to transfuse my son with platelets, he won’t live past tomorrow... Please speak to them for me... I beg you..." he finished, crying desperately.
Tears kept flowing down Sienna Thorne’s face as well. She nodded, sniffling, "Wait for me. Give me three hours, and I’ll bring the money to you. Don’t jump; wait for me!"
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and calmly instructed the police officer next to her, "Keep an eye on him; I’m going to find the contractor now."
The officer who brought her up asked, "Do you need a ride in the police car?"
"Yes!"
.
The police car sped away from the construction site with its siren blaring.
Given the urgency, they ran several red lights, arriving at the base of a certain skyscraper downtown in less than half an hour.
Sienna Thorne got out of the car, looking up at the over fifty-story skyscraper, unable to fathom how such a company could maliciously withhold workers’ wages.
Thinking about Mr. Wang’s young son lying in the hospital waiting for money to get a platelet transfusion filled her with a mix of grief and anger as she stormed up the steps.
The interior of the building was very high-end, decorated with a space-age style, clearly the domain of those with deep pockets. Unfortunately, all of this was built on the backs of exploited workers.
Sienna Thorne approached the reception desk, presenting her credentials, "I’m Lawyer Sienna Thorne, here to see your legal representative."
The receptionist asked, "Do you have an appointment?"
"...No."
"Then I’m sorry, please schedule an appointment with the executive office."
There’s no time for appointments and arrangements now. She only had three hours!
Sienna Thorne gritted her teeth, clutching her briefcase tightly, and headed straight for the nearby access gate, intending to follow one of the cardholders through.
Seeing this, the receptionist was about to call security when a police badge was presented in front of her.
"I’m a police officer. There’s a case concerning your boss. Let the lawyer go in."
The receptionist was caught off guard by such a scenario and hesitated. Meanwhile, Sienna Thorne had already followed someone into the elevator.
