Chapter 644: Chapter 644: Pain

Chloe Reed froze and gave him a quizzical look.

’Is this something he’d actually say?’

’With his personality, it was already a miracle he wasn’t pressing his advantage!’

’But now, he was being polite and distant with her instead.’

She showed no further reaction and continued to eat her congee.

Hearing her, a faint smile touched Walker Grant’s lips.

After she finished eating, the doctor came over for an examination.

The doctor examined the wound on Walker Grant’s chest, which was no longer worsening, before checking his eyes and applying fresh medication.

Chloe Reed watched from the side the entire time. When she saw the doctor remove the gauze from his eyes, her breath caught for a moment.

His eyes, coated in ointment, were shut tight. The corners were red, and tears streamed down his face.

Chloe Reed stared at the tears streaming from the corners of his eyes, her own gaze wavering.

She lowered her gaze, only to see that his hands, resting on his thighs, were clenched into fists. He was squeezing so tightly that the veins on the back of his hands bulged.

Chloe Reed blinked, thinking she was seeing things. But when she looked again, his fists were still clenched.

’Why is he clenching his fists?’

’His eyes... are they in a lot of pain?’

For some reason, she recalled what he had said last night.

He had said his eyes hurt, and she’d thought he was just playing pitiful to get her sympathy.

But now, she could see that wasn’t the case at all.

In that moment, Chloe Reed felt an unbearable ache in her chest. A painful, sour feeling built up inside her, layer upon layer, ready to erupt like a volcano.

She was miserable.

So miserable that her eyes began to sting, and tears threatened to spill over.

She blinked furiously, forcing the tears back.

Once the doctor finished redressing Walker Grant’s wound, she pulled out her phone and typed. A mechanical female voice filled the room. "I’m going to step out for a moment."

Walker Grant replied, "Alright."

He listened until her footsteps faded completely. Only then did the tension leave his body, and his breathing grew ragged and heavy.

An expression of agony twisted his features beneath the gauze.

Dylan Finch watched from the side, his expression fraught with worry. "Mr. Grant, I’ve already contacted the world’s best ophthalmologist. They’ll be here tomorrow for a consultation. I’m sure we’ll find a way to treat your eyes."

"Mm," Walker Grant grunted. "All of you... just get out."

"Alright."

Dylan Finch acknowledged.

Walker Grant added, "Stand guard outside. When she comes back... let me know."

"Yes, sir."

After Dylan Finch and the other bodyguards left the room, Walker Grant collapsed back onto the bed. The pain from his eyes was so intense it felt like his head was about to split open.

"..."

Before they came out, Chloe Reed had already hurried away from the area, even slipping off her shoes to avoid being heard.

Once she reached the corner, she put her shoes back on. The sound of Walker Grant’s agonized gasps echoed in her ears, and her heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand.

She took several deep breaths, then went to find his attending physician.

"Mrs. Grant, is there something I can help you with?" the doctor asked, surprised to see her.

Chloe Reed lowered her head and typed. The mechanical female voice sounded out, "His eyes—they’ve been in constant pain, haven’t they?"

The doctor nodded. "Yes. The poison’s composition is complex, and it chemically burned his eyes. The eyes are incredibly fragile. Until we can develop a specific antidote, Mr. Grant will continue to experience constant pain. Ordinary painkillers no longer have any effect on him."

At his words, Chloe Reed’s face grew even paler. She frantically typed, "Then when will the antidote be ready?"
