Chapter 30: Not so smooth
Stefan’s POV
My fists were already clenched. I was ready to throw hands at a System that didn’t even have a body to hit but heaven or hell maybe saved that dude...
Before I could throw a punch, it dinged, landing proud as usual.
[HIDDEN MISSION COMPLETE.]
[REWARD: +5,000 AP.]
I forgot every ache in my body in half a second. I forgot the throb in my chest where Zinnia’s fist had landed, forgot the way my face still felt swollen on one side. Five thousand AP did that to a man.
I jumped straight up off the ground and let out a sound that wasn’t quite a war cry and wasn’t quite a laugh, something ugly and triumphant that probably scared a slave or two nearby, but I didn’t care. I threw both arms up over my head and just stood there for a second, soaking it in.
I actually won.
I rolled my shoulders back, chest out, feeling like the richest man on two planets now, and addressed the empty air directly, since that seemed to be the only way this System ever listened.
"Clear my debt. All of it. Every last AP. And stop hitting me with the reminder every hour like I’m some deadbeat about to skip town." I said to it and it responded immediately.
[MIRACLE DEBT: Cleared.]
[DEBT REMINDER NOTIFICATIONS: disabled.]

I grinned down at the balance sitting in the corner of my vision, mine now, no leash attached to it.
"And fuck the daily tasks," I added, stretching my arms overhead until something in my spine popped satisfyingly.
"I’m resting today, doing absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing."
Silence. I took it as agreement, because silence was the closest thing to a concession this System ever gave me.
Then I turned around, already thinking about food, already reaching instinctively for a phone that hadn’t existed in my pocket for four days now. My thumb actually twitched like it expected to find one.
"Oh, right..." I remembered there was no phone here on this planet. No group chat. No way to just fire off a text to Lily - *bring me something with meat, extra spicy, hurry* - and have it magically appear twenty minutes later.
"How did an entire world function without a single phone between them?" I shook my head slowly, genuinely stunned by it.
That meant, no group chat, no memes. No texting under the table during boring meetings. No way to let somebody know what you wanted without carrying your own body across camp to say it out loud like some kind of caveman.
Savage way to live, honestly. Beautiful, terrifying, technologically hopeless savages.
I’d have to go find Lily myself, apparently.
~~~~~~~~~
Before I ventured out, I headed to the bathhouse. My body still smelled like dirt and sweat and the particular indignity of getting punched twice before breakfast, and I wasn’t about to go looking for anybody smelling like that.
I scrubbed down slow, letting the water work through the ache in my shoulders, and stepped out feeling halfway human again.
When I got back to my corner, I noticed a fresh slave cloth sat waiting for me, folded on the stone ledge, plain and gray same as always. I hadn’t even noticed it get dropped there - probably while I was passed out for half a day like the champion sleeper I apparently still was.
I pulled it on and made a mental note, one I kept making and kept forgetting: I needed something that actually looked like mine. Something with color, something that said Stefan Sinclair walked through here, not just another Bound in identical fabric.
"I’m no slave and definitely won’t share clothing with slaves." I muttered to the air.
Afterwards, I walked out of the tent, stepping into the morning light, and the first person I saw was Lily.
Lily was training two younger warriors near the edge of the clearing, calling out corrections in that clipped, formal way all of them talked, her arms moving in sharp instructive gestures while the two recruits mirrored her stance.
Sunlight caught the edge of her jaw, the line of her shoulder, and for a second I just stood there watching, thinking about how a woman I’d personally dragged back from the dead now looked more alive than half the people I used to know on Earth.
I started walking toward her because I needed food.
The System, predictably, had other plans.
[PRIMARY MISSION ASSIGNED.]
[Make Lily reach orgasm through breast stimulation only.]
[REWARD: ⚠️ Locked]
[PENALTY: ⚠️ Locked]
[TIME LIMIT: 10:00:00]
I stopped mid-stride, genuinely thrown. I’d been quietly calculating, somewhere in the back of my head, that first contact with a new recruit would ease in slow. Simple stuff.
A conversation, maybe a shared meal, or some simple sexual acts like kiss or rub something, something along the lines of what it took to even get Jonquil’s attention properly. Instead the System skipped every step in between and went straight for the good part.
A low chuckle worked its way out of me before I could stop it.
"Naughty boy!" The System was being straight-up naughty today, and honestly, I respected the hustle.
"Didn’t know you had it in you, my gee!" I muttered under my breath, rubbing a hand slowly over the back of my head, already picturing exactly how this was going to go.
Not that I needed convincing. I’d been thinking about burying my face in that woman’s succulent breasts since the day I brought her back to life with a Life Ember I couldn’t even afford.
The System had just handed me a permission slip.
[NOTICE: Host should approach with caution.]
The system interrupted my thoughts.
"Shut up," I muttered, low enough that only I could hear it. "I know my game."
I closed the last of the distance to her, already loading up something smooth in my head, some easy opener that would slide her right into a conversation. I never got the chance to use it.
"You want food." Lily said, not even glancing over from the drill she was running, flat and certain like she’d read my whole day off my face already.
Then she stood straight.
"Follow."
I opened my mouth but nothing came out. She’d already turned, already walking, already three steps ahead of a sentence I hadn’t even started.
I should’ve felt embarrassed by that. Somehow I didn’t. If anything, I felt like I’d been handed an opening - she was walking, which meant I got to follow her somewhere private, and somewhere private meant I could still shoot my shot before the ten-hour clock ran out.
Except she didn’t lead me anywhere private.
She walked me straight to where a cluster of slaves stood over open fire pits, roasted meat stacked high, fruit cut open and glistening in wooden bowls. She gestured at the whole spread without breaking stride.
"Pick what you desire," she said.
And then she was gone. Fast, same way all of them vanished the second they’d said their piece, leaving me standing there with an entire feast in front of me and absolutely zero progress on the actual mission.
I stared at the meat for a long moment.
"Well, that didn’t go so smooth." I muttered, finally, to nobody.
