Chapter 46: [46] "Three"

The goal didn’t slow Tensé down. It made them desperate.

Their manager pulled his back three into a back four after the restart, throwing caution to the wind.

Three forwards now. All in.

Henri saw it from the touchline and didn’t like it.

"They’re going to commit numbers forward," he shouted across the technical area. "Stay compact! Don’t get caught in transition!"

Mateo relayed it across the pitch with two fingers pressed flat, a gesture the whole team understood by now.

---

Minute fifty-six.

Tensé surged. Their newly minted left winger, a kid who couldn’t have been older than nineteen, cut inside Owusu and forced a low shot that Blažek smothered at the near post.

The rebound fell loose.

Demirci hacked it clear, no elegance to it, just survival.

The home crowd roared anyway. Belief was cheap when you’d already seen one miracle scored against you and were hungry for your own.

Luc tracked back, further than a striker should, picking up the second ball thirty yards from his own goal.

He didn’t rush it.

He looked up, found Idriss already peeling off the last defender’s shoulder, and played a first-time pass that split the gap between the two Tensé center-backs with surgical precision.

Idriss was through. One-on-one with the keeper.

He shaped to shoot far post.

The keeper bit early, weight shifting.

Idriss didn’t take the shot. He squared it instead, across the six-yard box, to nobody. He must have thought he had a runner with him.

The ball rolled untouched out of play.

Idriss stood with both hands on his head.

"Shit," Luc muttered under his breath, jogging up to support the next phase.

---

Minute sixty-three.

Tensé’s desperation cracked their shape entirely.

Their right-back, the same overlapping wingback Bastien had flagged on the drive down, made another run forward. His seventh of the match. His legs no longer agreed with the decision.

Mateo intercepted the loose ball in midfield, no contest required. The wingback was still jogging back into position, his sprint long gone.

Mateo didn’t hesitate. He drove the ball forward himself, captain’s armband catching the floodlight, covering ground that should have belonged to a younger man.

He drew two defenders toward him.

That was the invitation.

Luc had already started his run, curving wide right, away from the ball, dragging the more advanced center-back with him on pure instinct.

The defender followed the run instead of trusting his teammate to cover centrally.

A gap opened directly behind him.

Mateo spotted it and threaded a pass through the channel without breaking stride, the kind of ball only a player who had spent a decade playing could deliver under pressure.

Luc cut back inside, meeting the ball in his stride.

One touch to control. The second touch was the shot.

The Tensé keeper came off his line fast, narrowing the angle the way good keepers were taught to.

Luc didn’t blast it. He didn’t need to.

He opened his hip, took the pace off the connection deliberately, and dinked it just over the keeper’s outstretched glove.

The ball dropped, kissed the underside of the crossbar on the way down, and crossed the line with cruel slowness.

GOAL!!

2-0.

The home end finally went quiet. Properly quiet this time, the silence admitted defeat before the scoreboard officially confirmed it.

Luc turned to the bench first, not the crowd.

Henri had both fists raised, his usually nervous face cracked into something close to pure joy.

Mateo arrived a half-second later, grabbing the back of Luc’s neck the way he always did. It was now the special something between them.

"Two," Mateo said. "And it hasn’t even been your night."

"It’s never just my night," Luc said. "You delivered that ball perfectly."

"I know I did."

They both laughed out loud on the pitch.

---

Tensé’s manager made a triple substitution at the hour mark, throwing fresh legs forward in a last desperate roll of the dice.

It didn’t matter.

Their shape had collapsed into something resembling a schoolyard kickabout, bodies committed forward with no defensive structure left to protect the gaps they left behind.

Bastien came on for Lacombe in the sixty-eighth minute, immediately injecting energy into a midfield that had started to wilt under the narrow pitch’s relentless physicality.

He didn’t look nervous. He looked like a kid who had spent an entire car ride explaining tactics and now wanted the chance to prove he understood them.

---

Minute seventy-eight.

Bastien received the ball wide left, his first meaningful touch since coming on.

He didn’t overthink it. He cut inside on his stronger foot, beat his marker with a single sharp body feint, and drove a low cross across the face of the six-yard box.

It was an ambitious ball for a young midfielder still finding his confidence. Hard, fast, and dangerous.

Idriss arrived a half-step late, his earlier miss clearly still gnawing at him, lunging to connect but only getting a faint touch that deflected the ball into Luc’s path instead.

Luc met it on the half-volley, no time to set himself, no time for the kind of careful angle calculation he usually prided himself on.

Pure instinct. Pure repetition. Thousands of hours condensed into a fraction of a second.

The connection was clean.

The ball rifled low into the bottom corner before the keeper had finished adjusting his stance.

GOAL!!!

3-0.

A fucking hat-trick! (Sorry)

---

Luc stood still for a moment, chest rising and falling, staring at the net rippling in front of him.

He just turned slowly, taking in the scoreline glowing on the small electronic board mounted above the away end.

Then raised a fist to the sky.

Bastien reached him first this time, practically sprinting the length of the pitch, his usual quiet caution entirely abandoned.

"That was my assist," Bastien said, breathless, somewhere between disbelief and pride.

"It was," Luc said. "Don’t get used to the feeling. It fades fast if you don’t chase it again."

Bastien nodded like he’d just been handed scripture.

Idriss arrived next, his earlier miss visibly weighing on his shoulders despite the assist he’d inadvertently provided with the deflection.

"Doesn’t make up for the sitter I wasted."

"It evens out. You’ll bury the next one."

Mateo grabbed both of them by the back of the neck at once, dragging them into a rough three-man huddle that looked more like a wrestling hold than a celebration.

"Hat-trick in a cup tie!" Mateo said. "But against a Ligue Beta side. The papers will call this a mismatch."

"They’d be right," Luc said.

---

The final twelve minutes played out as a formality.

Tensé’s players moved like men counting down a clock they no longer had any stake in. Their manager had already stopped shouting instructions from the technical area, his arms were now crossed, accepting the inevitable with the resignation of someone who’d seen this story before.

Henri rotated his bench freely, resting key legs ahead of the Phocéen fixture looming five days out.

The match drifted toward its conclusion with no further goals, no further drama, just the slow passing of minutes against a side that had given everything it had in the first hour and had nothing left for the second.

The referee checked his watch.

Piii Piii Piiii.

Final whistle.

3-0.

SC Valois advanced to the next round of the Cup de France.

The away end, modest in size but loud in spirit, sang long after the players had started walking toward the tunnel.

Luc shook hands with the Tensé captain at the center circle, a brief, respectful exchange between a man who had given everything and a man who had simply been better.

"Bonne chance," Luc said, one of the few French phrases he bothered using without irony.

The captain nodded, exhausted, already thinking about his Monday’s training session.

---

In the cramped away dressing room, the celebration was muted a bit.

Mateo handed out water bottles like party favors. Cillian was already narrating the hat-trick back to Bastien as though Bastien hadn’t been standing on the pitch for it himself.

Luc sat on the bench, peeling tape from his ankles, his phone buzzing in his open bag.

He checked it. Who else but Valérie:

Three goals against a Ligue Beta side isn’t going to count toward the wager, American. But it’ll look fantastic on a highlight reel. Good work

I like watching you score regardless — V

He kept the phone without responding.

[Wager Tally remains: Open Play Goals — Beaumont 9 | Fontaine 11]

[MD14 incoming: Stade Phocéen. At Home. You are still two behind. The clock has not stopped.]

Luc read it standing by his locker, the satisfaction of the hat-trick already fading.

Three goals. None of them mattered to the only number that did.

He pulled his jacket on and zipped it to the collar.

Outside the cramped shed of a dressing room, the team bus idled with the engine running, headlights shining bright.

"Good work, Yankee." It was Mateo.

"Now it means nothing. The match is done, let’s look forward."

Mateo didn’t argue with that. He understood the math as well as anyone.

The bus doors hissed open.

Behind them, Stade Tensé’s floodlights buzzed once and went dark, the small stadium folding itself back into the valley it had briefly stepped out of.

Ahead of them, Phocéen awaited. The wager awaited.

Two goals.

Still two goals behind.
