Chapter 45: [45] "Mid-Air"

Tensé was two hours south of Paris, tucked into a valley that didn’t appear on most maps unless you searched specifically for lower-tier French football.

Their stadium held four thousand people. Three thousand eight hundred of them showed up.

The team bus rattled down a single-lane road flanked by vineyards gone brown for the season. Luc watched the landscape change from city concrete to rural stone through a window fogged at the edges.

Hugo wasn’t on the bus. His brace still locked his ankle at ninety degrees, and Henri had banned him from travel until the swelling fully receded.

Cillian sat two rows up, headphones in, mouthing lyrics to something only he could hear.

Bastien sat beside Luc, a folded printout in his lap. Hugo’s handwriting again, printing out from a phone photo because Bastien said he learned better that way.

"Their right-back overlaps on every possession," Bastien said, not looking up. "Hugo counted it from the last three Ligue Beta matches he watched."

"Counted from his bed."

"He doesn’t call it that. He calls it a ’tactical sabbatical.’"

Luc almost smiled.

[System Notification]

[Objective: Punish the overlapping right-back before halftime]

[Reward: +3 Dribbling stat (permanent)]

[Penalty: Reduced stamina recovery between matches for two weeks]

"Of course there’s a clock on it."

He didn’t argue. He never did anymore.

"This is the first I’ve gotten a dribbling related reward."

---

Stade Tensé smelled like cut grass and diesel from the generator powering the floodlights.

The pitch was narrow, almost suffocatingly so, built for a different era of football where width wasn’t loved as much yet.

Henri gathered the starting eleven in the cramped away dressing room, a converted storage shed with exposed pipes running along the ceiling.

"Don’t underestimate this surface," Henri said. "It’s narrow. It rewards quick combination play, not long diagonals."

Idriss was starting up top alongside Luc, the two of them paired for the first time all season.

"We’re sharing the line today," Luc said to him, lacing his boots.

"I noticed." Idriss didn’t look up. "Don’t ball-hog."

"Don’t miss."

Idriss almost laughed. Almost.

Mateo pulled the captain’s armband over his bicep, the gesture slower than usual, like the fabric had gotten heavier since the announcement that he was leaving.

"Last cup run with this on my arm," Mateo said to the team in the room. "Might as well make it a memorable one, eh."

The room went quiet for half a second before Demirci broke it with a joke that nobody outside the locker room would ever understand.

---

Kickoff came under lights that buzzed audibly between plays, a low electrical hum competing with the home crowd’s noise.

Tensé set up aggressive. A back three. Wingbacks pushed high, overlapping constantly exactly as Hugo’s notes predicted.

Minute six. The right wingback surged forward, Demirci tracking him a half-step too slow.

The cross came in low. Blažek punched it clear, the ball spinning awkwardly off his glove.

It fell to Cillian on the edge of the box. He looked up, saw nothing, played it back.

Reset.

Luc watched the wingback retreat to his starting position, breathing hard already.

"He’s not built for ninety minutes of that," Luc thought. "He’ll burn himself out early, then I’ll collect the pieces later."

---

Minute fourteen.

Tensé’s wingback overlapped again, the exact rhythm Bastien had warned about.

This time Mateo read it. He stepped into the passing lane before the ball arrived, intercepted clean, drove forward into the space that had opened directly behind the advancing wingback.

Mateo found Idriss with a driven pass along the narrow channel.

Idriss took one touch, shaped to cross.

The Tensé center-back slid in, desperate, cleats raised slightly off the turf.

The whistle blew. Free kick. Twenty-two yards out, slightly left of center.

Luc stood over the ball.

[System Notification]

[Reminder: Objective active — punish the overlapping right-back before halftime]

"How would I even manage that from a free kick?" Luc thought, confused.

He struck it low and hard, under the wall, through a gap that shouldn’t have existed but did because one Tensé defender flinched.

The keeper got down late but managed to get a good hand to it.

It cannoned off the post and out for a corner.

The home crowd exhaled, loud and relieved.

Luc jogged back to his position. No frustration on his face. Just recalibration with the TES objective still on his mind.

The corner came to nothing. A flicked header, cleared off the line by a defender who clearly expected to be tested more than twice in one half by a Ligue Alpha side.

Minute twenty-eight. Tensé broke forward on the counter, four passes strung together with the kind of desperate cohesion that comes from players who know this is the only stage they’ll get for a long... long time.

Their striker, a big builded twenty-two-year-old with more heart than positioning sense, found himself one-on-one with Edouard.

Edouard shepherded him wide and forced the shot out of him, but from a bad angle.

Blažek saved comfortably, palmed it out and it deflected off a Tensé player for a goal kick.

The little Valois fans in attendance exhaled.

Henri was pacing the technical area like a man counting down a fuse he couldn’t see.

---

Halftime arrived scoreless.

The dressing room smelled like diesel and rust from the leaking radiator in the corner. There was Luc, trying to figure out why TES hasn’t given him an ’objective failed’ notification yet.

Henri didn’t shout. He drew on the small magnetic board instead, his hand moving fast.

"They’re tiring on the right," he said. "Their wingback has made six overlapping runs. He’s gassed."

"I noticed," Luc said.

"Then exploit it. Switch the point of attack early in transitions. Force him to defend in space, not just track runners."

Mateo nodded, already thinking three moves ahead the way captains in their final season tended to.

Idriss sat quietly, lacing his boot tighter.

"Second half’s mine to finish," he said, not looking at anyone specifically.

"It’s nobody’s," Luc said. "It’s ours."

Idriss glanced at him. Something passed between them that didn’t need translation.

---

Second half began with the narrow pitch playing tricks on both sides.

Minute fifty-one. The Tensé wingback, exactly as predicted, began losing the race against his own legs. His overlapping run came a half-second slower than the one before it.

Mateo exploited the gap immediately, driving a diagonal switch across the width of the pitch toward Dário on the opposite flank.

Dário took it in stride, beat his man with a single sharp cut inside, and drilled a low cross across the face of goal.

Idriss got a foot to it. But it was also blocked, deflected up into the air.

The ball spun awkwardly off a defender’s shin, climbing into a slow, ugly arc above the penalty area.

Time seemed to fracture into something slower.

Luc was already moving.

He read the trajectory before it had fully committed to one, the way a man reads weather before the clouds finish forming.

He didn’t wait for the ball to drop. He met it early, his body torqued sideways, hip rotating through the strike with the kind of violence that looked effortless from the stands and felt like detonation from the inside.

The connection was clean. Pure leather on laces, no scuff, no mishit.

The ball left his boot like it had somewhere urgent to be.

It rocketed past the keeper’s outstretched glove, clipped the underside of the crossbar, and crashed into the net with enough force to rattle the post.

GOAL!!!

The stadium went still for half a second, the kind of silence that happens right before disbelief turns into noise.

Then it erupted, both ends of it, even some of the home support clapping despite themselves not being Valois fans, why?, because they knew exactly what they had just witnessed.

[System Notification]

[System upgrade complete]

[Objective complete: Punish the overlapping right-back before halftime]

[Note: Technically achieved post-halftime. TES is feeling generous today.]

[Reward: +3 Dribbling stat (permanent)]

[Additional upgrade Reward: +3 Volley stat (permanent)]

"Generous? Or you lagged the fuck out." Either way, it benefited Luc.

He didn’t run to the corner flag. He turned and looked at the bench instead, found Henri with both hands pressed to his face in disbelief.

Mateo reached him first, lifting him half off the ground in a hug that crushed the air out of both their lungs.

"That wasn’t human," Mateo said into his ear.

"Luck," Luc said. "Just Luck."

Idriss jogged over last, slower than the others, no smile but something close to respect in his eyes.

"That should’ve been mine to finish."

"You set the table, lil bro, I just ate."

Idriss’ laugh nearly broke through.

---

1-0.

The scoreboard read it plainly, the numbers stark against the dim floodlights buzzing overhead.

Tensé’s bench was a mess of shouting now, their manager waving both arms, trying to drag some structure back into a team that had just watched a Ligue Alpha striker turn an ugly deflection into the kind of goal that ends up on every highlight reel in the country by morning.

Luc walked back to the center circle, his jersey clinging to his shoulders with sweat despite the cold valley air.

He glanced toward the sideline reporter crouched near the advertising boards, camera raised, already filming.

He gave the camera nothing. No celebration, no gesture, no wrist tap.

Just a long look, cold and unreadable, before he turned his back on the lens entirely.

Behind him, Tensé prepared to kick off again, their faces tight with the particular desperation of underdogs who’d just been reminded exactly how far the gap really was, and exactly what the definition of the word ’underdog’ implied.

The match still had forty minutes left.
