"Attention, everyone!" Theodore’s voice rang out through shelter and attracted everyone’s gazes.

"Today is the day. In just two hours, the monster will arrive," he began, his voice conveyed urgency.

"What are we supposed to do?" someone asked.

"You must fight," Theodore replied. "You will all be armed with weapons and armour. I know this is a scary situation, but I assure you that if you work together, you can defeat the monster.

Theodore held up his sword.

"Unfortunately, I cannot join you in this battle. I am an appointed leader, chosen by the Luminars. However, I will still be giving commands and strategising from the command post. The boss monster isn’t here, yet, but there is a large horde outside. I suggest you clean the streets before the boss arrives."

"I trust you will all do your best to protect our city and defend our homes."

He gave the crowd a warm smile, his eyes shining with pride.

"I will lead you to the armoury, where you can get equipped," he added.

Everyone nodded and followed Theodore to the armoury.

There, everyone was equipped with a sword and armour. Some had guns and rifles, others had bows and arrows. John had to admit, Theodore might be a prick, but he knew how to put up an act.

"Okay, everyone," Theodore said, his voice booming. "Let’s go!"

John led the way, taking point and heading towards the gate.

"John, wait," Stephanie called after him.

"What is it?"

"I’m scared, I don’t know if I can do this."

"Yes, you can, I’ll be with you."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

"Okay," she said, her voice trembling slightly.

He held her close and kissed her gently, his hands caressing her soft skin.

"Everything will be fine," he whispered, his voice husky.

"Let’s do this."

John led the way, holding Stephanie’s hand.

Together, they headed towards the gate, their weapons ready.

John stole a glance at Theodore who had stayed behind. He had promised to lead them, but he was not doing anything. It was clear to John that Theodore had no intention to intervene or help. He wanted people to die, he was only interested in those who were strong enough to survive.

John scoffed as he surveyed the surroundings. The people of the shelter had begun gathering into smaller groups. It was not the best idea, but it was something.

As they approached the gate, the air grew thick with tension. John gathered Julia and Stephanie.

"Get ready," John whispered, his grip tightening on his dagger.

"John!" Dalia screamed. She and Julian had joined their group.

"Stay here," John said, his voice firm.

Julian scowled, but he did not argue. Julia and Stephanie held onto John’s arms, their faces pale and tense. The doors of the gate were flung open, revealing a horde of monsters.

"Oh shit," Julian cursed.

The horde charged towards them, their blood-curdling screams filling the air.

"Here we go," John said, his voice determined.

Julia and Stephanie held onto him tightly as the horde closed in. The monsters reached them and the battle began. The first thing that struck John was the smell. It was putrid, like rotten flesh and excrement. It was so strong, he could taste it on his tongue, making him gag and cough.

The second thing he noticed was the noise. The horde of monsters was screaming and roaring, their voices so loud it was deafening. The third thing was the fear. It was palpable, filling the air with a sense of dread and panic. The fourth thing was the heat. The air was sweltering, the ground was covered in a layer of sweat.

The fifth thing was the chaos. The monsters were everywhere, fighting and killing and destroying. John had no time to think or react. He could only fight.

"Hold your ground!" John yelled, swinging his dagger and slicing through the nearest monster.

His blade cut through a scaly monster’s body, severing its arm. The monster fell, but more were approaching.

"There’s too many of them," Julian cried, panic creeping into his voice.

"Keep fighting!"

Julia’s eyes widened as she saw John use her signature buff on himself. For a second, she thought she could make him even more powerful if he could have the buff twice, but to her dismay, it didn’t work. She gritted her teeth and used the buff on herself.

As John took on the majority of the monsters swarming them, Dalia took on a fighting stance and fireballs erupted from her hands, striking the horde.

"Dalia, you’re amazing," Stephanie gasped.

Dalia gave her a weak smile. "It’s the only way I can help."

"Thank you," Stephanie said, her voice cracking.

Julia stood next to Stephanie, her hands trembling as she raised the staff she had received from Theodore and pummelled a monster into the ground.

Theodore watched them fight, a smirk on his face. He had given up on the notion of fighting. Instead, he was enjoying the show, waiting for the inevitable slaughter.

Julia and Stephanie fought together, their bodies pressed against each other, their hearts racing.

The battle raged on and the number of monsters decreased, but so did the number of people.

Just when they thought they could take a break, a deafening roar pierced the air.

John looked up and saw a massive black figure descending from the sky.

"The boss monster," he said.

Julia and Stephanie stared at the monster in awe, their faces pale and their eyes wide.

"That’s the boss monster?" Dalia asked, her voice trembling.

"Yes," John replied.

The monster landed with a crash, causing the ground to shake and cracks to form beneath its feet.

John’s eyes widened as he stared at the monster.

The monster was black and covered in scales. It looked larger than a dragon, its body muscular and its wings tattered. Its eyes were blood-red, and its teeth were sharp and jagged.

Its claws were massive, and its tail was long and covered in spikes.

The monster roared, causing the air to vibrate.

The sound was deafening, and the smell of rotting flesh and burning scales filled the air.

The monster roared, its voice shaking the earth and causing the hairs on John’s arms to stand on end. John’s eyes narrowed and he used his Appraisal skill on the monster.
