Chapter 306: The Ambush -2

Jenna’s phone continued to ring, making it impossible for either of them to ignore.

"Why don’t you just answer it?" Izumi asked.

"No."

"Then I could do it for you."

"No."

"That’s not what I meant, but you can’t just keep ignoring him."

"Then I’ll turn off my phone."

"No, I can’t let you do that."

Before Jenna could react, Izumi snatched the phone from her hand.

"Izumi, don’t do that!"

The two immediately began struggling over the device.

Izumi stretched her arm over the back of the chair, keeping the phone just out of reach. Jenna lunged for it, determined to snatch it back before the call connected.

Just as her fingers were about to close around the phone—

"What are you two doing?"

A voice suddenly cut through the room.

Simon Red had appeared out of nowhere.

His eyes immediately fell on the phone before moving to the pair of them and seizing it from her.

"Lady Izumi, you shouldn’t be making Jenna’s job more difficult," he said calmly. "What you’re doing could be considered a security risk. It’s important that operatives remain reachable at all times."

His sudden appearance made both girls freeze, exchanging uneasy glances.

"Sorry, we were just messing around," Izumi said with a nervous grin.

Just then, another call from Yohan came through.

"Yohan," Simon read aloud. "Is he one of our operatives?"

"How is that any of your business?" Izumi asked, reaching for the phone.

Simon casually moved it out of her reach.

"As your handler, it’s important for me to know everything that happens in your life. I’m sure Jenna understands that."

"What kind of stupid joke is that? Are you her boyfriend or something?"

"Is that who this is?" Simon asked, his gaze shifting to Jenna.

Jenna couldn’t bring herself to look at him.

It felt as though her blood had turned to ice.

She knew the danger of questions like that.

Operatives weren’t supposed to form attachments. They weren’t supposed to have relationships, friendships, or anything that could distract them from their duties.

And Yohan wasn’t just anyone.

He had made it clear that his number one goal was to bring down Hatoru.

If Simon found out she had been involved with him, she’d immediately be labeled a compromised asset.

Then her family would die.

After that, she’d be next.

She had seen it happen before.

Again and again.

Simon himself had made sure of it.

Hatoru might have been the organization’s master mind, but Simon was the reason it functioned at all.

"Looks like your friend left a message," Simon said calmly.

He pressed play.

"Jenna, I know you’re still mad at me, but I’m about to do something pretty stupid, so you need to listen. I’m coming to take down Hatoru tonight, and I’ll need you to get Izumi somewhere safe."

The room fell silent.

Simon’s brows slowly furrowed.

"What is this?" he asked. "He’s coming after us?"

"I... I don’t know," Jenna mumbled.

Beside her, Izumi stared with confusion written all over her face.

Simon tossed the phone back to her.

"Call him and find out the details."

"But—"

"Now."

The single word left no room for argument.

After a brief hesitation, Jenna answered.

"Jenna, thank goodness."

"Yohan, I just heard your message. What are you planning to do?" she asked, unable to hide the concern in her voice.

"I told you already. Today’s the day I make my move."

"Yohan, I told you it’s impossible. Hatoru has an army."

Even with Simon standing right in front of her, she tried to steer him away from this path.

"And that’s why I’m bringing one of my own."

His voice was firm.

"Jenna, I found the mansion without your help, and I’m going to do this without your help too. The only reason I called was so you could keep Izumi out of danger."

"Yohan, wait—"

"No. I’m done waiting for your approval."

There was a brief pause.

"Goodbye."

The call ended.

"Waiting for your approval," Simon repeated thoughtfully. "That’s interesting."

"Jenna, what is he talking about?" Izumi asked, panic creeping into her voice. "He’s not serious, right?"

Jenna remained silent.

She knew Yohan wasn’t joking.

He was really going to do it.

She had hoped she’d eventually convince him to abandon his revenge.

That hope was gone now.

"This Yohan..." Simon muttered, rubbing his chin. "Why does that name sound familiar?"

His eyes suddenly narrowed.

"Ah."

Recognition flashed across his face.

"I think he’s the one Roman mentioned."

Jenna’s heart sank.

"The monster that dismantled his entire operation in a single day."

Simon let out a quiet chuckle.

"I dismissed it at the time. It sounded impossible."

His gaze settled on Jenna.

"But hearing the conviction in his voice... I’m beginning to reconsider."

"He’s just joking," Jenna said immediately. "Yohan would never—"

CRACK!

A brutal slap sent her crashing to the floor.

Pain exploded across her face.

Simon looked down at her with cold disgust, "Shut your treacherous mouth."

"What are you doing?!" Izumi screamed.

She rushed forward, pounding her fists against his chest.

Simon barely acknowledged her presence. With a casual shove, he sent her stumbling away.

His attention remained fixed on Jenna.

"How long have you been hiding him from us?"

He stepped forward and drove a kick into her face.

The impact sent her rolling across the floor.

Before she could recover, Simon grabbed her by the hair and forced her head up.

"Tell me," he hissed. "What secrets have you given him?"

"I haven’t told him anything," Jenna pleaded desperately. "I swear. Please... don’t hurt my family."

A smile spread across Simon’s face.

Not a warm smile.

A cruel one.

"Too late for that."

His grip tightened.

"You’ve already chosen a side."

Jenna felt her stomach drop.

"Once I’ve dealt with him, we’ll go together."

His smile widened.

"You can watch your family die with your own eyes."

SMASH!

A ceramic vase shattered against the back of his head.

Simon staggered forward.

The blow wasn’t enough to knock him unconscious, but it left him visibly disoriented.

Behind him stood Izumi, breathing heavily.

Fragments of the broken vase scattered across the floor.

"Jenna!"

She rushed over and grabbed her hand.

"Come on. We have to go."
