Chapter 1104: Chapter 1100: Repentance Came Too Late
As Irene thought of this, the weak smile on her lips became more evident.
"Well, I really should properly thank Sister Sophie." She lifted her gaze, her voice somewhat bitter and frail.
Irene suddenly felt little desire to continue talking; she lay down on the bed, pulling the quilt over her head, "Brother Asher, I’m a bit tired."
Asher Land acknowledged softly and, without further interruption, turned and walked out of the room, gently closing the door behind him.
Irene’s body curled up in the bed, her hand gripping the corner of the quilt tightly.
That night, she tossed and turned, thinking about many things.
...
The next morning, a maid approached Sophie Smith as she was having breakfast and whispered a few words in her ear.
After speaking, the maid looked up and found Asher Land on the opposite side staring at her with a scrutinizing look. She retreated a few steps awkwardly, seemingly intimidated by Asher Land’s gaze.
"What are you doing?" Sophie chuckled lightly, "You’ve scared her."
"What did she say to you?"
Was there still something he wasn’t allowed to know?
"Oh, she didn’t say much..."
"Sophie!" Asher Land’s voice unintentionally grew louder, "Are you playing games with me?"
He’s not blind, yet she’s telling lies while staring right at him.
"Why are you so concerned?" Sophie stood up and headed upstairs, "I’m going to check on Irene’s situation."
Without waiting for Asher Land to respond, she walked away swiftly.
In fact, the maid had only whispered a few words in her ear: Miss Morton wants to see you.
Sophie didn’t know whether the maid acted under Irene’s instructions, but she only shared the message with her, making it seem mysterious.
Upon opening Irene’s room door, she saw Irene wearing a blue and white hospital gown, standing by the window. From behind, her figure looked much thinner, like a frail bamboo stick under the loose hospital gown, ready to collapse.
"Irene." Sophie walked in and closed the door.
"Sister Sophie."
Irene called out sincerely, causing Sophie to feel momentarily disoriented.
"What’s wrong?" Sophie approached her, glancing at the untouched breakfast on the table.
"Is the breakfast not to your taste? I can ask the maid to clear it and make something new for you..."
"No need." Irene shook her head, her lips curving gently upward, "I didn’t ask for you because of breakfast."
"I wanted to thank you." Irene’s thank you felt unexpected, leaving Sophie puzzled as to why she was being thanked.
"Thank you for asking Brother Asher to accompany me."
Sophie was a little surprised, "Um, ..."
"Sister Sophie, you don’t need to say anything more, I know you mean well, I’m sorry, I was immature before, made too many mistakes..." Irene turned around, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. She truly repented for every mistake she had made in the past, but it was too late to make amends, her regrets came too late.
Sophie didn’t know what to say; Irene’s words to her were truly unexpected.
She slowly stepped closer to Irene, stopping a few steps behind her.
"Sister Sophie, I’m sorry, I’m sorry..." Irene crouched, her body curling up, sobbing.
"Don’t dwell too much, everything is over now."
