Chapter 209: Unity

It moved with a calm, deliberate pace, as if it knew it was in charge.

The other Olfs parted to make way for it, their heads lowering in submission.

’Huh?’ Darion thought. Were they waiting for this creature to come out and join them before they started to eat on the errligs? It seemed that way.

The pack had been waiting for their leader. They wouldn’t eat without him. They wouldn’t move without him. They wouldn’t do anything without him.

His system confirmed it: [Horned Olfs... Olfs in general. Whether normal or horned, are very bonding creatures who cannot do things without each other. They move in packs together, so anytime they saw that they were complete in a setting or something like that, they waited for the other to arrive.]

That was actually surprising. Darion had wondered why the creatures hadn’t just eaten the meat instead of waiting.

He had assumed that hunger would override everything else, that the sight and smell of fresh blood would send them into a frenzy of tearing and biting.

But they had waited. They had stood around the errligs corpses, their noses twitching, their mouths salivating, yet none of them had taken a single bite. They had waited for their leader.

Even wild animals had leaders, he realized. Not just humans, not just the organized societies of the world, but even these creatures, these Horned Olfs, had a hierarchy.

They had a chain of command, a way of organizing themselves that ensured the pack functioned as a unit.

And this one, the one that had emerged from the shrub, was very much respected. The way the others had parted for it, the way they had lowered their heads, the way they had stepped back to give it space, it was the same deference you would see in a pack of wolves or a pride of lions.

Darion had seen it before, again in the documentaries he used to watch on Earth.

The alpha wolf, the dominant lion, the leader of the pack.

He watched the leader approach the errligs, its head held high, its body relaxed and confident. The others watched with anticipation, waiting for the signal that it was safe to eat.

Darion nodded, already reaching for his inventory now. Time to wrap this up. So they were creatures that worked in harmony and unity and all that shit.

Well, how about they die in unity!

They were about to die in perfect harmony, their leader too. All together as one. That was the thought that crossed Darion’s mind as he watched the Horned Olfs gather around the errligs corpses, their heads lowered, their bodies relaxed.

They had waited for their leader, and now they were ready to eat together.

Darion decided that the Yuimons would do the job.

He currently had fifteen Yuimons in his inventory, massive creatures that had proven their worth in battle.

Now, should he be summoning all of them? That seemed like too much. Overkill, even. The Horned Olfs were tough, yes, but they were still just wolves with horns. Fifteen Yuimons against fifteen Horned Olfs was not a fight, it was a slaughter.

Maybe just five Yuimons would handle the creatures underneath him pretty fine. Five would be enough to overwhelm the pack, to create chaos and confusion, to break their formation and scatter them.

But then, there was a chance a few might escape. Darion wasn’t sure five Yuimons could grab fifteen Horned Olfs and kill them instantly. The creatures were fast, agile, and they had a leader that had already proven its intelligence.

And the way these creatures looked, they certainly avoided predators, creatures that they knew they couldn’t defeat, alone or in groups.

They were cautious, careful, always scanning for threats. But if they were faced with one or many in a situation that barely presented escape as an option, they would certainly fight.

They would put on a good fight, one that would be shown with much intensity because they knew they were already good as dead. They would fight desperately to find a way out of their situation, to break through the encirclement and flee.

And so Darion wanted to end this at once. Some instant death. No drawn-out struggle, no desperate escapes, no chance for the Horned Olfs to scatter and survive. Fifteen undead Yuimons versus fifteen Horned Olfs. One for one. Perfect symmetry.

And so, Darion summoned fifteen undead Yuimons from his inventory, giving them the Distant Command to not bite anyone’s head off.

They were to fight so that the bones of the Horned Olfs were intact.

If Darion hadn’t given that command, it would have just been chop! Chop! Chop!

Horned Olfs heads coming off and becoming useless for him to use. The Yuimons were powerful enough to crush the skulls of their prey with a single bite, and if they did that, Darion would have nothing left to raise. He needed the bodies intact. He needed the bones whole.

The Yuimons were all summoned on the battlefield now, just as the Horned Olfs were setting their mouths on the errligs in unison to eat.

They materialized in a ring around the clearing, their massive bodies blocking every possible escape route. Their green eyes glowed in the dim light, their circular mouths open, their teeth glistening. The Horned Olfs froze, their heads snapping up from the errligs, their eyes wide with shock.

Darion noticed the shock on their faces as they saw Yuimons that looked like walking deads with glowing green eyes looking at them.

They all froze. The leader, the one that had emerged from the shrub with such confidence, stood rigid, its horns lowered, its body tense. The others followed its lead, their tails lashing, their fangs bared. They were ready to fight.

But they were also terrified. Darion could see it in their eyes. They knew what Yuimons were. But seeing them in this Undead form, it terrified them the more.

Darion gave the command. And the Undead Yuimons attacked.
