Chapter 66: The Ultimate Sacrifice

The deafening roar of the Nine-Tails abruptly cut off.

Standing in the heavy smoke near the hospital triage barrier, Ren froze. The apocalyptic shaking of the earth ceased instantly. He looked up past the burning rooftops toward the Hokage Monument.

The colossal, terrifying silhouette of the demon fox was gone.

He teleported the beast, Ren realized, wiping the blood from his chin beneath his mask.

Ren didn’t hesitate. He forced his exhausted body into motion, his boots tearing into the cobblestone as he launched himself toward the outer walls of the village. His lungs burned, and his legs ached violently from the sheer physical strain of the night’s combat, but he pushed past the pain. He moved with pure, desperate speed, blurring into the dark treeline beyond the village borders.

Minutes later, Ren burst through the heavy canopy into a massive clearing.

The landscape was completely devastated, the ancient trees flattened into splinters. In the center of the crater, a shimmering golden barrier had been erected, fueled by the last, desperate dregs of Kushina Uzumaki’s chakra chains.

Ren landed silently on the thick branch of a surviving oak tree just outside the barrier.

He was too late.

Inside the golden dome, Minato Namikaze stood in front of a stone altar holding a crying newborn. Kushina lay collapsed on the dirt a few feet away, her breath shallow and ragged. Stuck directly over her heart was the heavy stabilization tag Ren had given them in the cave, glowing with a faint, fading blue light. It was the only thing keeping her shattered chakra network from completely failing.

But it wasn’t the Tailed Beast or the dying woman that made the blood freeze in Ren’s veins.

Looming directly behind Minato was a towering, spectral entity draped in ragged white robes. It had demonic, glowing skin, a mane of wild white hair, and a long, jagged tanto gripped in its mouth.

The Shinigami. The Reaper of Souls.

Ren didn’t even attempt to activate his Mangekyō to read the threat. His eyes were already burning with a dull, vicious agony. And even if he had the strength, he knew it was pointless. That was a literal god of death. It was entirely outside the bounds of human intervention.

Minato had already woven the hand seals for the Shiki Fūjin. The Reaper’s spectral arm plunged straight through Minato’s stomach, grabbing the massive, dark Yin chakra of the Nine-Tails and violently dragging it into the Hokage’s own body to be sealed away forever.

Minato let out a blood-curdling scream, dropping to his knees as the immense, demonic chakra flooded his mortal coils.

Kurama, now half its size but burning with absolute fury, realized exactly what was happening. The Fourth Hokage was going to seal the rest of him into the screaming infant on the altar.

"I WILL NOT BE CAGED AGAIN!" Kurama roared, its voice shaking the earth.

The colossal fox lunged forward, raising a massive, razor-sharp claw. With terrifying speed, it thrust the claw downward, aiming directly for the newborn’s heart.

Kushina weakly lifted her head, her violet eyes widening in pure horror. "Naruto!"

She tried to push herself up, desperately wanting to throw her body in front of the blade to save her son. But the extraction had taken too much. Her arms gave out, and she collapsed back into the dirt, entirely helpless.

Minato didn’t hesitate.

Moving faster than the eye could track, the Fourth Hokage threw himself directly into the path of the colossal claw.

SHCKK.

The sickening sound of flesh tearing echoed through the clearing.

Ren watched in grim silence as the massive, bloody claw stopped mere inches from Naruto’s crying face. Minato hung suspended in the air, the beast’s claw driven squarely through his back and out his chest.

He had taken the fatal blow entirely alone.

Minato coughed up a massive amount of blood, splattering the stone altar. But the Hokage didn’t waver. He reached out with his trembling, blood-soaked hands, forming the final seal.

"Eight Trigrams... Seal!" Minato choked out.

The remaining Yang chakra of the Nine-Tails was violently ripped from the physical world, spiraling into a complex sealing matrix that burned itself into the stomach of the crying newborn.

With a deafening rush of displaced air, the colossal fox completely vanished.

The barrier of golden chains shattered into a shower of dying sparks.

Minato’s lifeless body slipped from the dissipating claw, hitting the dirt with a heavy, hollow thud. The Shinigami behind him raised its blade, severed Minato’s soul, and swallowed it, vanishing back into the underworld.

Ren stared at the fallen Hokage. He had a Senzu fragment in his vault. He could heal almost any fatal physical wound. But as he watched the spectral jaws of the Reaper snap shut over Minato’s soul, Ren knew the fragment was entirely useless.

A Senzu bean restored cellular damage; it couldn’t bring back a consumed soul. Even if Ren forced the fragment down Minato’s throat and miraculously healed the gaping hole in his chest, it would just leave a perfectly healthy, completely empty vessel. Minato Namikaze was truly, irrevocably gone.

"Minato..." Kushina whispered, her voice barely a breath.

On her chest, the stabilization talisman suddenly hissed, turning to ash. The anchor was gone. Kushina’s eyes rolled back, her life force plummeting toward absolute zero.

A dark blur dropped from the treeline.

Ren slammed into the dirt beside her. He slid his arm under her shoulders, lifting her head.

He couldn’t save the Hokage, but the mother’s soul was still in her body.

Ren gritted his teeth, tightly squeezing his left eye shut, and forced his right eye to activate one final time.

Black Vault.

The consequence of pushing the Mangekyō to its absolute limit finally caught up to him. A tearing, catastrophic pain exploded through his right optic nerve. A thick stream of dark blood poured from his tear duct, soaking the inside of his mask. The spatial rift snapped open just long enough for the small wooden box to drop into his hand, and then the technique violently collapsed.

Ren gasped, his vision in his right eye instantly fading into a blur of absolute, pitch-black static. He had pushed the ocular limit too far, and the eye had completely shut down.

Ignoring the terrifying loss of sight, Ren flicked the wooden box open with his thumb. Inside sat the small, green fragment of the Senzu Bean.

He pinched Kushina’s jaw open, forcing the dry green fragment past her pale lips, and clamped her mouth shut. He rubbed her throat, physically forcing the swallow reflex.

For two agonizing seconds, absolutely nothing happened. Kushina’s skin was ice-cold.

Then, the biology kicked in.

A massive, suffocating wave of pure, dense Uzumaki chakra suddenly erupted from Kushina’s body, blowing the dust and debris away in a wide circle.

The color flooded rapidly back into her skin. The ragged, torn flesh around her weakened extraction seal knitted itself back together in a matter of seconds. Her breathing, previously a death rattle, suddenly became deep, steady, and incredibly strong.

But she didn’t wake up.

The sheer, catastrophic trauma of the beast extraction, followed instantly by the violent cellular regeneration, was too much for her exhausted mind. Kushina remained entirely unconscious, her body falling into a deep, comatose sleep as it focused entirely on surviving.

Ren let out a ragged breath, carefully lowering her head back into the dirt.

The fragment had rewritten her fate. She was alive.

Suddenly, a sharp, echoing rustle of leaves broke the silence of the forest.

Ren froze. Through the trees to the south, he could hear the distinct, high-speed impact of shinobi boots striking the branches. Footsteps. Fast, heavy, and numerous. The Third Hokage and the ANBU vanguard were arriving to secure the perimeter.

Ren couldn’t be found here. Not standing over the dead Fourth Hokage, wearing a blank mask, with half his vision completely gone.

He stood up, pulling his heavy tactical cloak tightly around his shoulders. He cast one last glance at the tragic, quiet clearing—the dead hero, the sleeping mother, and the crying newborn wrapped in a blanket on the altar.

Ren stepped backward into the heavy shadows of the treeline and vanished silently into the night, just seconds before the first ANBU dropped into the clearing.
