Chapter 59: The Hospital Visit & Sannin Tension
The Konoha General Hospital was a chaotic, high-stress environment, perpetually smelling of sharp antiseptic and bitter medicinal herbs. It was the last place in the village Ren wanted to spend his afternoon, but he had a delivery to make.
He walked through the sliding glass doors of the main lobby, followed by four of his men carrying heavy, reinforced wooden crates.
"Set them down by the quartermaster’s desk," Ren instructed, adjusting the collar of his dark grey yukata. "Tell them it’s the premium burn salves and sterile bandages I promised. No invoice. It’s a donation."
As his men moved to drop off the supplies, Ren navigated the busy corridors, heading toward the specialized recovery wing.
He turned a corner and nearly collided with a young man carrying a towering stack of medical charts.
"Whoa, sorry!" the young man gasped, desperately balancing the heavy files against his chest to keep them from spilling across the floor. He let out a breath and looked up. He had light brown hair, and a faint, jagged scar ran down the side of his neck.
The young man blinked, looking at Ren’s height, the expensive tailored yukata, and the unfamiliar face. "I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before. Are you a new medical vendor?"
"Just dropping off a donation," Ren replied smoothly. "I’m Ren Uchiha."
The young man froze. The remaining files in his hands nearly slipped. His eyes went wide as the name fully registered. He quickly shoved the stack of paperwork under one arm and eagerly thrust his free hand forward, clasping Ren’s hand in a tight, excited grip.
"You’re Ren Uchiha?" the young man asked, his voice filled with sudden awe. "The one who saved me? I’m Nawaki!"
Ren offered a calm, highly satisfied smirk. "Well, unless there is another obscenely charming Uchiha running around funding this hospital, then yes. That would be me."
Nawaki let out a breath of pure disbelief, shaking Ren’s hand vigorously. "I can’t believe it. I never got to thank you in person! By the time I fully recovered and got out of the ward, Tsunade told me you had already moved to the Capital. But I remember what happened. I remember waking up from the stasis seal and seeing you shove that pill in my mouth."
"And you kept that detail out of the official ANBU reports," Ren said, withdrawing his hand politely. "Consider us entirely even. The administrative life seems to suit you, by the way."
Nawaki let out a short, self-deprecating laugh. "Barely. My sister is an absolute slave driver. She has me auditing the entire surgical wing’s inventory." He paused, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "I did hear a rumor, though. Someone said a Capital merchant bought out the old Uchiha teahouse and completely shut down the clan elders this morning. I should have known it was you."
"I didn’t shut them down," Ren corrected, adjusting his cuff. "I just politely explained the tax code. Speaking of your sister, is she around? I brought the burn salves she requested."
"I’m right here," a sharp, authoritative voice said.
Ren turned.
Tsunade Senju stood in the hallway, wearing her standard grey medical uniform, her blonde hair tied loosely behind her back. She crossed her arms, her amber eyes locking onto Ren with the piercing, analytical gaze of the world’s greatest medic.
Even at a glance, Tsunade was a breathtakingly commanding presence. But Ren wasn’t an intimidated Genin anymore. He met her gaze with a calm, effortless smile.
"Lady Tsunade," Ren greeted. "I dropped the supplies off at the front desk. The Capital route was clear, so they arrived a week early."
Tsunade didn’t thank him right away. She walked forward, her eyes scanning him from head to toe. She didn’t look at his clothes or his smile. She looked at his posture. She looked at the way his weight was perfectly balanced on the balls of his feet.
"Nawaki, take those charts to room three," Tsunade ordered, not breaking eye contact with Ren.
"Yes, sis," Nawaki muttered, quickly scurrying down the hall to escape his sister’s intense focus.
Once they were alone in the corridor, Tsunade stepped closer. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"You don’t walk like a merchant," Tsunade stated bluntly.
"I have very good posture," Ren replied smoothly.
"Civilians drag their heels. They slouch. You’re holding your center of gravity like a frontline combatant," Tsunade observed, her medical instincts flaring. "Come here."
Before Ren could argue, Tsunade grabbed him by the sleeve of his yukata and pulled him into the nearest empty examination room, kicking the door shut behind them.
"Sit on the table and open the top of your yukata," Tsunade ordered, stepping up to him. Her hands began to glow with a faint, diagnostic green chakra.
"We haven’t seen each other in five years, Tsunade," Ren smirked, leaning back against the edge of the examination table but complying, slipping the heavy fabric off his shoulders. "Are you taking me to dinner first, or is this strictly an interrogation?"
"It’s a medical assessment," Tsunade warned, ignoring the banter. "You’re paying for black-market research and funding half my ward. If someone in the Capital is slipping you combat stimulants, I need to know before your heart explodes."
She stepped directly into his personal space. The smell of sharp antiseptic mixed with the faint, sweet scent of sake on her breath. She placed her glowing hands flat against his bare chest to check his chakra pathways.
The moment her hands pressed against his skin, Tsunade completely froze.
Her eyes widened. She dragged her hands upward, her fingers pressing firmly into his heavy pectoral muscles, across his broad shoulders, and down the dense, corded muscles of his arms. She felt the terrifying, coiled-spring density of his physique—the direct result of his System-enhanced stats compounding over five years of silent training.
"What is this?" Tsunade murmured, her voice losing its strict, professional edge. She stepped closer, her chest brushing lightly against his as she examined the incredibly dense muscle fibers. "You sit at a desk all day. You manage supply routes."
"I do," Ren agreed softly, looking down at her.
Tsunade looked up, her amber eyes locking onto his dark ones. The physical proximity in the small, quiet room suddenly shifted, the clinical atmosphere replaced by a suffocatingly heavy tension. She could feel the raw, predatory heat radiating off his body.
"You don’t get a body like this pouring tea, Ren," Tsunade said, her voice dropping into a husky whisper. Her thumbs traced the heavy musculature of his stomach. "Your muscle density is absurd. Your chakra coils are thick. You feel like an S-rank heavy-assault specialist."
Ren didn’t step back. He let his hands rest casually on his hips, leaning in just a fraction so he could feel the warmth of her breath. "I’m a very proactive merchant, Tsunade. I carry my own boxes."
Tsunade’s eyes darkened. The sheer audacity of the lie, paired with his arrogant, knowing smirk, sent a sudden, unwanted spike of heat straight to her core.
And standing this close, with her hands pressed against his bare chest, she was acutely, physically aware that he wasn’t a boy anymore.
"You’re a liar," Tsunade whispered, her hands lingering on his skin a second longer than medically necessary.
Before Ren could reply, the door to the examination room was suddenly thrown open.
"Tsunade! The nurses said you were—"
Jiraiya stopped dead in the doorway.
The Toad Sage had just returned to the village. He was wearing his traditional red haori, a massive scroll strapped to his back. A boisterous grin had been plastered across his face, but it instantly vanished the moment he saw the scene in front of him.
Tsunade was standing inches away from a half-naked, incredibly built eighteen-year-old, her hands resting flat against his bare chest. The sexual tension in the small room was so thick it could be cut with a kunai.
Jiraiya’s eyes snapped from Tsunade to Ren. He recognized the Uchiha crest embroidered on the discarded sleeve of the yukata. He recognized the smug, aristocratic face.
"What the hell is this?" Jiraiya demanded, his voice immediately dropping into a low, jealous growl.
Tsunade pulled her hands back instantly, her face flushing slightly as she cleared her throat and crossed her arms, desperately trying to regain her professional composure. "I am conducting a standard medical diagnostic, Jiraiya. Knock next time."
"A diagnostic," Jiraiya repeated, his eyes narrowing as he glared at Ren. "I didn’t realize standard diagnostics required you to stand close enough to share a heartbeat. Who is this kid?"
Ren casually pulled his yukata back over his shoulders, adjusting the collar with slow, deliberate arrogance. He looked the legendary Sannin up and down.
"I’m the man who actually pays for the medical supplies in this hospital, Jiraiya-sama," Ren introduced himself smoothly, offering a completely insincere smile. "Ren Uchiha. It’s a pleasure."
Jiraiya’s jaw tightened. He stepped fully into the room, his towering frame attempting to physically intimidate the younger man. But Ren didn’t flinch. He just looked mildly amused.
"Right. Fugaku’s kid. The one who sells perfume," Jiraiya scoffed, taking a deliberate step closer to Tsunade, trying to re-establish his territory. "Listen, merchant. Tsunade is a busy woman. She doesn’t have time to pamper civilians with scraped knees. So put your shirt on and get out of her office."
The room went dead silent. Tsunade’s chakra instantly flared with warning, ready to violently eject Jiraiya through a wall for giving orders in her hospital.
But Ren beat her to it.
"You’re right. She is very busy," Ren agreed calmly, walking past Jiraiya toward the door. As he passed the Sannin, he paused, leaning in just slightly. "Which is exactly why you shouldn’t waste her time with cheap parlor tricks and bad poetry. See you around, Jiraiya."
Ren offered Tsunade a highly satisfied smirk over his shoulder, then walked out into the corridor.
Jiraiya stood frozen, his face turning a dangerous shade of red as the sheer disrespect fully registered. He spun around to face Tsunade.
"Since when," Jiraiya demanded, pointing an angry finger at the empty doorway, "does an accountant talk to people like that? And since when do you look at accountants like that?"
Tsunade simply glared at him, the flush returning to her cheeks.
"Get out of my exam room, Jiraiya," she snapped. "Before I break your jaw."
