Chapter 38: Checkmate by Invitation

The morning sun had barely crested the Hokage monument when a squad of ANBU arrived at the Uchiha Cafe.

Ren was in the middle of inventory, counting the remaining stock of Jasmine and Sandalwood soap to load into the royal carriage waiting outside. The ANBU didn’t draw their weapons, but their presence was a clear, undeniable wall.

"Ren Uchiha," the ANBU captain said, his voice muffled behind a porcelain hound mask. "The Hokage requires your presence in his office immediately. Your travel clearance has been flagged."

Ren looked at the ANBU, then out the window at Lord Kazama, who was waiting impatiently by the gilded carriage.

"Tell the envoy I’ll be ten minutes late," Ren muttered to Itachi. He untied his apron, grabbed the heavy royal scroll from the counter, and followed the guards out the door.

Ten minutes later, Ren stood in the center of the Hokage’s office.

The room was suffocating. Hiruzen Sarutobi sat behind his desk, his face obscured by a thick cloud of pipe smoke. Standing to his right, leaning heavily on a wooden cane, was Danzo Shimura.

Ren didn’t look intimidated. He looked at his pocket watch, annoyed by the delay. To him, these were just middle managers holding up his supply chain.

"Lord Third," Ren said, offering a polite, perfectly calculated corporate bow. "I was informed there is a hold on my travel permits. I would like to resolve this quickly. I have a client waiting."

Danzo’s single visible eye narrowed, analyzing the boy’s every micro-expression. The sheer arrogance. The absolute lack of fear. He knows we are trapped, Danzo thought. He is parading his victory right in front of us.

"There is no hold, Uchiha," Danzo stated, his voice cold and hard. "There is a hard denial. We are in the middle of a three-front war. Civilian travel outside the village walls is strictly prohibited for security reasons. You will unpack your carriage and return to your teahouse."

Ren looked at the scarred elder. He didn’t know who this old man was, but he recognized a regulatory roadblock when he saw one.

"With all due respect, I am not a civilian going on a leisurely vacation," Ren said calmly. "I am a vendor fulfilling a direct purchase order."

"Your ’goods’ present an unacceptable security risk to the nation," Danzo countered, his voice dripping with venom.

Ren blinked. Security risk? He mentally reviewed the soap recipe. Does he mean the lye? Are they seriously trying to classify my soap as a hazardous material just to extort a tax cut?

"The only risk here is a breach of contract," Ren replied smoothly. He stepped forward and placed the heavy scroll directly onto the center of the Hokage’s desk. He unrolled it, revealing the massive, undeniable red seal of the Fire Daimyo.

"A week ago, Lady Madoka of the Royal Court received a sample of my product," Ren explained, speaking in clear, professional tones. "She found the quality to be irreplaceable. By direct royal decree, I have been summoned to the Capital to secure a procurement contract for her household."

Hiruzen looked down at the seal. His pipe nearly slipped from his teeth.

Danzo’s knuckles turned white as he gripped his cane. There it is. The absolute proof. He stared at Ren, terrified by the boy’s flawless execution. Ren hadn’t just placed a Mangekyō hypnotic suggestion into the Daimyo’s wife—he had used her to legally force the Hokage’s hand.

"You cannot leave," Danzo hissed, his paranoia peaking. "The Hokage has the final authority on who crosses those gates."

Ren finally turned his full attention to Danzo. His expression dropped its polite retail mask, replacing it with the cold, ruthless stare of a CEO dealing with an incompetent liability.

"Let’s be very clear about how authority works," Ren said, his voice dropping a fraction of an octave. "Konoha is a military contractor. The Fire Daimyo is your client. He pays your budget, he funds your infrastructure, and he sanctions your wars."

Ren tapped his finger on the royal seal.

"This is a direct summons from the Daimyo’s household. If you obstruct my carriage, you are not enforcing village security. You are interfering with the royal family’s personal procurement," Ren stated, his eyes locking onto Hiruzen’s. "In the corporate world, we call that a breach of contract. In the political world, I believe it is called treason."

The silence in the office was absolute.

Hiruzen closed his eyes. He felt a massive migraine building behind them. He knew Danzo suspected the boy of something dark, but the reality on the desk was undeniable. If Konoha insulted the Daimyo’s wife over a travel permit, the funding cuts would cripple their war effort within a month.

The boy had them in a flawless, inescapable legal checkmate.

"Stamp it," Hiruzen sighed heavily, reaching into his drawer.

"Hiruzen!" Danzo snapped, taking a step forward. "You cannot let him reach the capital! You don’t understand the threat—"

"I said stamp it," Hiruzen repeated, his voice hardening into the tone of the God of Shinobi. He pulled out his official seal and slammed it down on Ren’s travel permit.

Hiruzen handed the stamped paper across the desk. "You are cleared for travel, Ren. Be mindful on the roads. Wartime routes are highly unstable."

"Thank you for expediting the bureaucracy, Lord Third," Ren said. He rolled up the Daimyo’s scroll, offered another polite bow, and walked out of the office without a second glance.

When the door clicked shut, Danzo stood perfectly still in the shadows.

"You just signed the death warrant of this village," Danzo whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of rage and absolute dread. "He is going to bypass us entirely. He is going to take the Capital."

"He is selling soap to a noblewoman, Danzo," Hiruzen rubbed his temples. "Stop seeing ghosts in the shadows. Let him go."

Danzo didn’t argue. He turned and walked out of the office, his cane clicking sharply against the floorboards.

He didn’t return to his own office. He walked straight down into the deepest, darkest level of Root headquarters. He bypassed the standard observation teams and walked directly into the barracks of the Alpha Squad—his most lethal, remorseless killers.

"The legal blockade failed," Danzo told the masked captain, his eye cold and merciless. "The target is on the move. He is using a royal envoy as a shield."

The captain drew a poisoned tantō, kneeling on the stone floor. "Your orders, Lord Danzo?"

"No survivors. No evidence. Leave the carriage a burning wreck in the forest," Danzo commanded. "The Mangekyō user must die before he reaches the capital."

Up at the village gates, Ren walked back to the gilded carriage.

He handed the stamped permit to the Chunin guards, who immediately signaled for the massive wooden doors to open.

Ren stepped up to the carriage door, but he hesitated. He looked out at the dense, sprawling forests of the Fire Country. His CEO brain was already running the risk assessment. He was traveling with a carriage full of gold leaf, protected by ceremonial samurai who were better suited for parades than ambushes. The roads were crawling with missing-nin, bandits, and deserters desperate for cash.

If I lose the inventory, the contract is dead, Ren thought, pulling out his ledger.

He needed security. But he couldn’t hire Konoha ninja—they were controlled by the same paranoid bureaucrats who just tried to stall his permits. He needed independent muscle. He needed someone who understood that money was the only real law in the world.

Ren turned to Lord Kazama. "Give me one hour. I need to make a stop at the bounty exchange."
