Chapter 37: The Royal Scent
Konoha was a practical village. The buildings were concrete and wood, built to withstand enemy assaults. The roads were packed dirt, designed for shinobi to move quickly without slipping. The colors were muted greens, browns, and grays. It was a military base hiding behind the title of a village.
So, when a massive, gilded carriage pulled by four pristine white horses rolled through the main gates, the entire village stopped to stare.
The carriage was a mobile fortress of absolute luxury. It was covered in gold leaf, draped in rich red silk, and flanked by twelve heavily armed samurai wearing the crest of the Fire Daimyo.
The gate guards, a pair of battle-hardened Chunin, immediately snapped to attention, expecting the carriage to turn toward the Hokage Tower. Instead, the driver whipped the reins, and the massive procession rolled straight past the administration district, heading directly for the commercial sector.
Inside the Uchiha Cafe, Ren was sitting at a table with Itachi, staring at the rejected land permits.
"If we can’t build the factory, we have to artificially raise the price of the soap again to slow down demand," Itachi suggested, his pencil hovering over the ledger. "Ten thousand ryo a bar?"
"It doesn’t solve the core issue," Ren sighed, rubbing his temples. "Danzo and Koharu are going to bleed us dry with red tape. We have the product, but we have no political leverage to protect the supply chain."
The bell above the cafe door violently jingled.
Ren looked up as two towering samurai stepped into the shop. They didn’t order tea. They flanked the door, standing at rigid attention.
A moment later, a man stepped between them. He was dressed in layers of impossibly expensive silk, holding an ornate folding fan. He looked around the cafe with an expression of mild distaste, clearly unaccustomed to stepping foot in a filthy ninja village.
"I am Lord Kazama, Senior Trade Envoy to the Royal Court of the Fire Nation," the man announced, his voice echoing in the quiet cafe. He snapped his fan shut and pointed it at the counter. "I am looking for the alchemist. The creator of the Ivory Blossom."
Ren blinked. He looked at Itachi. Itachi shrugged.
Ren stood up and smoothed out his apron. "I’m the manager. And the soap is called Jasmine and Sandalwood. What can I do for you, Lord Kazama?"
Kazama walked forward, pulling a heavy scroll from his robes. He slammed it down on the wooden table right on top of Ren’s denied land permits.
"A week ago, a trade representative’s maid returned to the capital carrying a single wooden box," Kazama said, his tone brisk and entirely businesslike. "She presented it to Lady Madoka, the wife of the Fire Daimyo. Her Grace is highly particular about her vanity, and she found your product... exceptionally satisfactory."
Kazama opened his fan, waving it slightly. "The other noblewomen in the capital have already noticed the change in her scent. Naturally, Her Grace wishes to gatekeep the source. She intends to secure an exclusive supply before the rest of the court can acquire it."
Ren stared at the man, his CEO brain rapidly calculating the sheer scale of the opportunity that had just walked through his front door.
Kazama tapped the heavy scroll. It was stamped with the massive, red seal of the Fire Daimyo.
"By direct royal decree, you are hereby summoned to the Fire Capital," Kazama stated. "You will bring whatever stock you currently possess and demonstrate your extraction methods to the court. If your product meets her permanent standards, Lady Madoka is prepared to offer you a Royal Procurement Contract, officially naming you the sole vanity purveyor for the Daimyo’s household."
Itachi’s pencil stopped moving.
Ren didn’t flinch. He looked at the royal seal, and then he looked at his denied land permits sitting directly underneath it.
The Hokage’s advisors controlled the village. But the Daimyo controlled the country. The Daimyo provided the military funding that kept Konoha alive. If Ren became an official, legally contracted supplier to the royal family, he would be completely untouchable. If Danzo tried to block his factory permits then, it wouldn’t be a zoning issue—it would be a direct insult to the Daimyo’s wife.
Ren had just found his sledgehammer to smash through the permit wall.
"A Royal Procurement Contract," Ren repeated, a sharp, deeply calculated smile spreading across his face. He bowed perfectly to the envoy. "I am deeply honored. I will prepare my inventory for travel immediately."
Deep underground, in the darkest level of Root Headquarters, absolute chaos had erupted.
The Root captain practically sprinted down the stone hallway, ignoring every protocol as he threw open the door to Danzo’s private office.
"Lord Danzo!" the captain shouted, his voice cracking with pure panic. "The target has bypassed the containment wall! A royal envoy just arrived from the Fire Capital. The Daimyo’s wife has personally summoned the Uchiha boy to the palace, offering him an exclusive royal contract!"
The blood drained completely from Danzo’s face.
He slowly stood up, leaning heavily on his cane. The pieces clicked together in his mind with sickening clarity. The delayed reaction. The aggressive targeting of high-status women. The sudden, desperate summons from the capital.
"It wasn’t poison," Danzo whispered into the cold room, the true horror finally dawning on him.
The captain swallowed hard. "My lord?"
"The soap was a delivery mechanism," Danzo snarled, his one visible eye wide with absolute dread. "He used the trade envoy’s visit last week to bypass our checkpoints. He laced the product with a slow-acting, scent-based Mangekyō genjutsu. He didn’t just infect the royal household—he planted a hypnotic suggestion directly into the mind of the Daimyo’s wife!"
The captain stumbled backward, the sheer scale of the threat breaking his mind. "You mean... she isn’t summoning a merchant..."
"She is summoning her puppet master," Danzo said, slamming his cane into the floor. "Don’t you see the brilliance of it? The Uchiha aren’t trying to stage a coup in Konoha. They are bypassing us entirely! If he reaches the capital and makes direct eye contact with the Fire Daimyo, they will cut our military funding and seize control of the entire Fire Nation without swinging a single sword!"
Danzo stared wildly at the map of the Fire Country pinned to his wall. The thirteen-year-old shopkeeper wasn’t just a terrorist anymore. He was a national extinction-level threat.
"If that boy reaches the palace, the village is doomed," Danzo stated, his voice trembling with a terrifying, absolute resolve.
He turned to the captain, his eye bloodshot and merciless.
"I will attempt to block his departure legally at the Hokage Tower tomorrow," Danzo ordered. "But if Hiruzen gets in the way... you prep the Alpha Squad. Every elite assassin we have. If that carriage leaves the gates, it does not reach the capital. We burn the Uchiha boy to ashes on the road."
Unbeknownst to Ren, his simple ambition to expand his soap business had just spiraled the paranoid misunderstandings of Danzo Shimura to an entirely lethal new level.
