Chapter 22: The War Economy Pivot

The blinds of the cafe were drawn tight. The front door was locked, the CLOSED sign flipped outward, and the usually warm, inviting lights of the storefront were completely extinguished.

In the back office, the atmosphere was as tense as an ANBU pre-mission briefing.

Ren stood at the head of his heavy oak desk, his knuckles resting on the polished wood. Spread out before him were complex logistical maps of the village, supply chain manifests, and his terrifyingly thick ledger.

Sitting across from him was his newly minted board of directors.

Kenji was leaning back in his chair, his singular hand drumming nervously against his thigh. Sayuri sat next to him, her cane resting against the desk, her brow furrowed in confusion. At the very end of the table sat seven-year-old Itachi, wearing his tiny black apron and holding a freshly sharpened pencil over a pristine notepad.

"I brought you all here tonight because the casual growth phase of this company is officially over," Ren began, his voice cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of his usual twelve-year-old charm. "We are shifting into a hyper-aggressive, six-month expansion."

"Expansion?" Sayuri asked, crossing her arms. "Boss, we’re already the biggest food supplier in the civilian sector. We’re moving three hundred bentos a day."

"It’s not enough," Ren stated flatly. He reached out and tapped the ledger. "By the first day of spring, I need five hundred thousand Ryo in liquid, net profit."

Silence descended upon the office. It was so quiet you could hear the wax dripping from the candle on the desk.

Kenji stared at Ren as if the boy had just grown a second head. Sayuri blinked, her mouth opening and closing like a fish.

Even Itachi’s pencil stopped moving. The seven-year-old prodigy’s dark eyes widened slightly as his brain aggressively calculated the math.

"Brother," Itachi said slowly, his young voice perfectly serious. "To achieve a net profit of five hundred thousand Ryo in six months, we would need to increase our daily sales volume by roughly four hundred percent. With our current kitchen space and labor limitations, that is a logistical impossibility."

"Exactly," Ren smiled, a dark, predatory gleam in his eye. "Which is why we aren’t going to rely on volume anymore. We are going to rely on margins."

Ren turned to the blackboard behind him. He picked up a piece of chalk and drew a massive pyramid.

"Right now, our business model relies on the bottom of the pyramid," Ren explained, tapping the wide base. "Genin, Chunin, and civilian workers. We will maintain the Shinobi Lunch Boxes on razor-thin margins to keep our public relations flawless. But to get half a million Ryo, we have to start hunting whales."

"Whales?" Kenji muttered, entirely lost.

"The elite," Ren clarified, his voice dropping to a ruthless whisper. "Corrupt civilian merchants capitalizing on wartime inflation. Bureaucrats from the Hokage’s administration. We are going to completely section off the right wing of the cafe. Velvet ropes. Thick curtains. We are going to introduce a VIP, elite-only menu, and we are going to charge them extortion-level prices for it."

Ren opened the system interface, invisible to everyone else in the room. He spent 1,000 of his hard-earned BC on a Tier 2 recipe: Jade Lotus Nectar. A chakra-infused brew that instantly cured hangovers, smoothed skin, and provided a mild, highly addictive euphoric calm.

He looked down at his seven-year-old brother.

"Itachi."

The prodigy sat up perfectly straight. "Yes, Brother."

"Your target demographic has changed," Ren ordered, sliding a stack of thick, gold-embossed cards across the desk. They read: The Diamond Lounge. By Invitation Only. "Tomorrow morning, you are deploying to the administrative district. Target the richest, most stressed-looking bureaucrats. Act incredibly arrogant. Treat them as if handing them this card is a supreme privilege. The rich cannot stand being excluded."

Itachi’s dark eyes narrowed. "I will exploit their vanity and make them feel inadequate unless they sit in our lounge."

"Perfect," Ren grinned. "Meeting adjourned. Tomorrow, we bleed the nobles dry."

The winter months in Konoha were brutal, but inside the newly established "Diamond Lounge," the fire roared and the money flowed like water.

Ren’s strategy was ruthlessly effective. Corrupt merchants and wealthy nobles paid two thousand Ryo a pot for the Jade Lotus Nectar, addicted to the sheer stress relief it provided in a war-torn village.

For five and a half months, Ren operated on practically zero sleep, held together entirely by his system’s Sleep-Efficiency Matrix. He pushed his civilian labor force to the absolute brink, aggressively maximizing bento output while draining the pockets of the elite.

Slowly but surely, the impossibly high 50,000 BC threshold began to look achievable.

15,000 BC. 28,000 BC. 42,000 BC.

It was the final week of winter. In exactly seven days, Mito-sama would enter the hospital and end Nawaki Senju’s life.

Ren was standing in his back office, staring at the glowing blue system interface hovering over his desk.

[CURRENT BALANCE: 44,500 BC]

He was so close. He just needed one more solid week of VIP sales, and he would have the Senzu Bean Fragment.

Suddenly, the back office door flew open.

Kenji burst into the room, panting heavily, his face completely pale. He was holding a crumpled supply manifest.

"Boss," Kenji gasped, leaning against the doorframe. "We have a massive problem."

Ren turned around, his stomach dropping. "What is it?"

"The border skirmishes," Kenji said, holding up the paper with a trembling hand. "The Hidden Sand and the Hidden Stone just launched a joint offensive in the Land of Rivers. They completely cut off the major trade routes leading into the Fire Country."

Ren froze. "Meaning what, exactly?"

"Meaning the supply lines are dead," Kenji swallowed hard. "The Akimichi warehouses just locked their doors to conserve rations for the military. Sugar imports are halted. Tea leaf imports are halted. We have no tapioca, no lotus leaves, and no premium rice. The Diamond Lounge is completely out of stock as of ten minutes ago."

The silence in the office was deafening.

Ren stared at Kenji, the words echoing in his skull. Out of stock.

He looked back at the glowing blue interface.

[CURRENT BALANCE: 44,500 BC]

He needed 5,500 BC. That was 55,000 Ryo. And he had exactly seven days left.

"Can we substitute?" Ren asked desperately. "Can we use local herbs?"

"No," Kenji shook his head. "The nobles only pay for the Jade Lotus effect. If we serve them regular tea, they’ll riot. And without the Akimichi rice, we can’t even maintain the standard bento volume. Boss... legal retail is completely paralyzed."

Ren slowly sat down in his chair.

For the first time since he unlocked the Tycoon System, he felt truly, utterly powerless. He had built an empire through flawless accounting, shameless marketing, and aggressive expansions. But he couldn’t out-account a geographical blockade.

He had seven days left, and the legal supply chain of Konoha had just collapsed.

"Tell Sayuri to shut down the Diamond Lounge," Ren said quietly, his voice hollow. "Close the front doors. We’re done for the day."

Kenji nodded solemnly and stepped out, closing the door behind him.

Ren sat in the dark office, staring at the 50,000 BC price tag of the Senzu Bean fragment. He thought about Tsunade-sama, spiraling into despair. He thought about the political protection of the Senju clan slipping through his fingers, lost forever because of a supply chain disruption.

I can’t let this fail, Ren thought, his hands clenching into fists. I built the bank. I just need the raw materials.

If the legal warehouses were locked, then the materials were being hoarded somewhere else. The war economy was dirty. If the merchants weren’t selling it legally, they were moving it illegally.

Ren stood up.

He didn’t put on his white apron. He walked over to the coat rack and pulled down his heavy, dark trench coat. He slipped it over his shoulders, hiding his secretly Chunin-level physique beneath the thick fabric.

He opened the bottom drawer of his desk and pulled out a heavy pouch of silver Ryo, tying it securely to his belt.

He walked out into the empty cafe. Itachi was sitting at a table, looking up at him with analytical eyes.

"Are we bankrupt, Brother?" Itachi asked calmly.

"No," Ren said, adjusting his collar, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying resolve. "We’re just pivoting."

Ren walked to the front door, staring out into the darkening streets of Konoha.

Arc 1 was about playing by the rules. It was about tax loopholes, clever marketing, and smiling at customers. But the rules had just failed him.

"Hold down the fort, Itachi," Ren ordered, stepping out into the cold night air. "I’m going to the black market."
