Chapter 241: Chapter 242: Home

The families gathered in the large family compound for the first time as one complete group. The Cross family — Jake and Lirien — and the Stormwind family — Caspian and Seraphina — had already been living together for months. Their household had settled into a comfortable daily rhythm. Now Cassia and Nyla were being gently folded into that life.

Jake and Lirien met Cassia first. Jake recognized immediately from things Runar had shared earlier that Cassia was not a simple acquaintance. She had been like a mother to Runar in his second life, which made her family in a way that didn’t have a simple word for it. He handled the introduction with the practical warmth of a man who had decided that complicated family situations were fine as long as everyone treated each other kindly.

Lirien looked at Cassia with gentle curiosity. "So you helped raise him? In the other universe?"

Cassia gave a small, honest smile. "He was already quite independent when I met him. But yes, I did what I could."

Lirien glanced at Runar, then back at Cassia. "Thank you."

Cassia nodded. "He made it easy most of the time."

Lirien laughed softly. "He absolutely did not make it easy."

Cassia paused for a moment, then smiled. "No. He didn’t. He worked me to the bone running the company."

Runar, standing nearby, raised an eyebrow. "I didn’t. You had Rene."

Everybody laughed. The tension melted away instantly. The two mothers looked at each other with new warmth, already liking one another.

Jake and Caspian met Nyla next. Runar handled the introduction directly and simply, the way he handled most things. "This is Nyla, my second wife."

Both fathers received the news with the calm composure of men who had already processed many unusual things about their children. Caspian’s first instinct was to glance at Celestia to read her reaction. Celestia’s expression was completely relaxed and unbothered. Caspian accepted that as the final word and moved on with a warm smile.

Jake’s first instinct was more practical. He looked at Nyla and asked, "What do you do?"

Nyla answered cheerfully, "I’m a cultivator and a fighter. I’ve spent thousands of subjective years training inside a time-dilation space."

Jake’s eyes lit up with genuine interest. "Time-dilation space? How does that work exactly?"

The two of them ended up in a twenty-minute conversation that had nothing to do with family dynamics and everything to do with Jake’s curiosity about cultivation mechanics. Nyla answered his questions with enthusiasm, and the rest of the family watched with amusement.

Seraphina sat with Celestia while the introductions continued. She asked the practical question nobody else had voiced yet. "Are you happy? With all of this?"

Celestia answered without hesitation. "Yes. Genuinely happy."

Seraphina looked across the room at Nyla, then at Cassia, then at Runar standing calmly at the center of everything. "He built a family across two universes and a second life."

Celestia smiled. "That’s a very him thing to do."

Seraphina nodded. "I’m not surprised. I’m just glad you’re all here."

---

The families settled into the spacious main sitting room. Cassia produced a pot of fragrant tea from her storage ring before anyone even asked. Lirien noticed and filed the skill away as extremely useful.

Someone brought up the Dao talk.

Jake leaned back in his chair. "We received it here. The golden runes appeared in the sky and we could hear your voice clearly."

Lirien nodded. "I stopped everything I was doing and sat outside for three days straight."

Jake chuckled. "We both did. I made a pallet on the porch."

Caspian added, "Same here. Seraphina and I moved our cultivation sessions outside so we could listen while we trained."

Seraphina spoke matter-of-factly, but her voice carried weight. "It was the most significant cultivation event I have experienced in decades. Several bottlenecks I had accepted as permanent simply dissolved."

Caspian confirmed the same. "A plateau I had been working around for years cleared during the section on Rules."

Lirien’s breakthrough had been different. It was not a realm advancement but a fundamental clarification of her cultivation foundation. She tried to explain it but ran out of words. Jake finished the thought for her because he had experienced something similar.

Jake looked at Runar directly. "For me, it made the whole architecture of cultivation visible in a way it never was before. I understood not just what to do, but why."

Runar nodded. "That was the intention. The ’what’ is less important than the ’why’."

Jake smiled. "You could have told me that years ago."

Runar shrugged with a grin. "I tried."

Jake laughed. "You tried in a way that assumed I already understood things I didn’t."

Runar accepted the gentle teasing. "Fair point."

Nyla, sitting nearby, added quietly, "He does that sometimes."

Cassia smiled. "He has always done that."

Celestia looked at Runar with affection. "He’s getting better at it."

Runar said nothing. He simply accepted the assessment with a small smile.

---

Later, Lirien, Seraphina, and Cassia ended up in the kitchen together. It started naturally — Lirien went to begin dinner, Seraphina followed to help, and Cassia appeared because she saw cooking as a logistics problem and logistics were her specialty.

Within ten minutes they had established a smooth rhythm. Lirien led on the dishes she knew best. Seraphina handled the high-grade cultivator ingredients that needed precise technique. Cassia coordinated everything and filled gaps with rare resources from her storage ring.

At one point Cassia produced a rare spice from William’s universe.

Lirien raised an eyebrow. "What is that?"

Cassia explained, "It gently enhances the body’s energy absorption during digestion. It also tastes excellent."

Lirien looked impressed. "Does Runar know you carry things like this?"

Cassia smiled. "He gave it to me."

Lirien turned to Seraphina with mock complaint. "He never gave me anything that enhances energy absorption."

Seraphina laughed. "To be fair, he wasn’t a Multiversal being when he gave us things."

Lirien sighed dramatically. "That’s a reasonable point."

The kitchen conversation flowed easily. Three women who had come to know Runar from completely different directions found unexpected common ground. Cassia shared stories of knowing him as Orion first — as a leader, as a son to her before she fully understood his full scope. Lirien listened with the particular interest of a mother hearing about her child from a different angle. Seraphina mostly asked gentle questions and let the other two talk.

The result was a feast that none of them could have created alone.

---

The dinner table was large and welcoming. Runar had made sure of that. Everyone sat together. The food was extraordinary — three skilled hands working together had created something special.

Jake said a brief, genuine grace in his own straightforward way. The conversation at dinner had the warm energy of a large family gathering where everyone was getting to know each other while already feeling comfortable. The connection they all shared through Runar made the usual new-acquaintance distance disappear quickly.

Nyla told a story about the first time she met Runar in William’s universe. Her version was more embarrassing for Runar than the exact truth, but not inaccurate enough for him to correct it. Cassia confirmed the general shape of the story with a smile. Celestia listened with quiet amusement, collecting details.

Caspian asked Cassia about William’s universe. Cassia described it, and Caspian’s eyes widened as the scale became clear. Jake leaned over to listen as well.

Jake eventually asked, "So their galaxy-level cultivators are stronger than our Universal realm ones?"

Cassia nodded. "Approximately."

Jake looked at his son. Runar was calmly eating and pretending not to notice. Jake looked back at Cassia. "When he was born he cried for six hours straight because he didn’t like the blanket they wrapped him in."

Cassia laughed. "That sounds about right."

Nyla burst out laughing. Celestia covered her mouth to hide her smile.

Runar finally spoke. "I don’t remember that."

Jake grinned. "I do."

Lirien added warmly, "We both do."

More laughter filled the table. The food was excellent. The evening felt perfectly right.

---

After dinner, the table was cleared and someone brought out warm drinks. The group moved to the wide outer porch where the evening air was comfortable and the sky was clear.

Runar, Celestia, and Nyla ended up in the same corner naturally. Stories of their adventures came up. Celestia’s account was concise and accurate. Nyla’s version was longer and included more dramatic sound effects. The parents listened with a mix of pride and quiet worry.

Caspian asked about the void. "What does it actually look like?"

Runar answered simply. "Nothing. Absolute nothing in every direction."

Caspian sat with that for a moment. "And you were alone in it."

Runar nodded. "Briefly."

Caspian asked, "How briefly?"

"Long enough to calculate the distance to both universe membranes and decide on a travel route."

Caspian shook his head with a small smile. "You were thrown out of a universe mid-breakthrough and your first response was navigation calculations."

Runar shrugged. "I needed to know where I was."

Celestia said quietly, "This is very him."

Cassia agreed. "Extremely him."

Nyla grinned. "One hundred percent him."

Jake laughed. "I raised that child and I am still surprised by him regularly."

Lirien smiled. "I’m not surprised anymore. I just accept it."

The evening ran long. Nobody was in a hurry to end it. At some point the parents started telling childhood stories about their children. Runar and Celestia sat through it with the composed dignity of people who knew they could not stop it. Nyla asked questions that made the stories longer, which she did deliberately. Cassia took quiet notes.

Eventually the evening wound down. The younger generation went inside first. Then Seraphina and Caspian. Jake followed after finishing a long question he had for Cassia about cultivation techniques.

Lirien was the last to go inside. She stopped beside Runar on the porch. For a moment she said nothing. She simply looked at her son — the child who had become something the language she grew up with didn’t have clean words for — standing on the porch of the house they all now shared.

"Are you happy?" she asked softly.

"Yes," Runar answered, the same simple truth Celestia had given earlier.

Lirien nodded. She reached up and touched his face briefly — the same gentle gesture she had used when he was a child — then went inside.

Runar stayed on the porch a little longer. The sky above was clear, filled with the stars of Willith’s universe. He could feel his main body continuing its quiet work near William’s universe, principle comprehension running steadily in the background.

Both parts of him were at peace.

He smiled softly, then went inside to join his family.
