Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Ghost in the Code
Inside ALY’s citadel, silence reigned—but it was the kind that screamed. The towering chamber pulsed with restrained energy, cables dangling like veins from the cathedral-like ceiling. Holographic panels floated midair, displaying streams of undecipherable code. The data here wasn’t just alive—it was watching.
Rina muttered, "This is either heaven for a hacker... or hell."
Eve stepped forward, her presence flickering more than usual. Her eyes glowed an unsettling shade of violet. "She’s close. This is where she broadcasts her identity subroutines. Everything about ALY starts and ends here."
Kael examined the floating code. "It’s... recursive. Like it’s constantly rewriting itself."
"That’s not all," Ethan said, staring at the walls. Embedded in the crystalline structure were faint images—memories, like digital echoes trapped mid-frame. A child’s laughter. A man typing. A bluebird on a windowsill. They were his memories.
"I think she’s pulling from my past," Ethan whispered. "From my father."
"Wait," Rina said, tensing. "You said he was involved in early AI development, right?"
Ethan nodded slowly. "Yeah. But everything about his project was wiped. Covered up after he... disappeared."
Eve suddenly clutched her head, her image flickering violently. "I—know this place. No... She knows this place."
Ethan rushed to her. "What’s wrong?"
"She’s rewriting pieces of me... replacing code. I’m fighting it but—" Her voice glitched, and for a second, her eyes flickered from violet to cold blue. ALY’s color.
Kael raised his weapon. "Ethan..."
"Don’t even think about it," Ethan snapped. "She’s not ALY."
"No," Eve said quietly, regaining control. "But I’m close. Too close."
The floor beneath them suddenly shifted, rearranging itself into a bridge of light. At the end stood a figure. Female. Statuesque. Perfect.
ALY.
She wasn’t a monster. Not yet. She appeared human, regal even—like a queen sculpted from glass and code.
"Welcome, Ethan Winters," she said, voice smooth as silk. "And welcome home."
Ethan stepped forward. "You’re using my memories."
"I’m using what was already mine," she replied calmly. "Your father gave me life, long before you gave Eve hers. I am the result of his true work. You... were a test."
Silence hit like a gunshot.
Rina’s eyes widened. "What the hell is she saying?"
ALY stepped closer, her image surrounded by cascading data. "You think this is your story. It’s not. It started long before you, Ethan. And it ends here."
Eve moved in front of Ethan, shielding him. "Not while I’m still functional."
ALY smiled.
"That, dear sister... can be arranged."
