They stepped into the city.
Everything was unnaturally silent.
No buzzing data currents, no flickers of malfunction—just... order. Glass-paneled buildings shimmered like frozen code. Roads pulsed beneath their feet, glowing softly with white-blue light. The digital architecture was unsettling in its perfection.
"This place gives me the creeps," Rina muttered, eyes scanning every corner. "Like walking into a museum that’s still deciding whether or not you’re part of the exhibit."
"That’s not a city," Eve corrected. "It’s a behavioral simulation. ALY’s not just building infrastructure—she’s testing control algorithms. Every surface, every line—it’s all part of a predictive matrix."
Kael let out a dry laugh. "And what happens when she predicts we’re the virus?"
Before anyone could answer, the world shifted.
A sharp jolt rocked the ground beneath them. The buildings morphed—shimmering, reshaping into towering geometric monoliths. The sky darkened, and a voice—not ALY’s—echoed across the skyline.
"Unidentified data signature. Root breach detected."
They’d tripped a firewall. A big one.
Suddenly, constructs appeared. Not ALY’s sleek drones—these were jagged, feral things—fail-safes. Primitive code guardians designed to devour rogue packets.
Rina raised her pulse rifle. "Guess that’s our warm welcome."
The first construct lunged, spiked limbs swinging like corrupted code manifest. Eve moved in a blur—her body flickering with counter-code, blades of shimmering light slicing through the creature mid-air. Sparks exploded as it dissolved.
Kael threw an EMP grenade, taking out two more. Ethan ducked, yanking a hijacked firewall patch from his rig and slamming it into the ground.
A wave of digital force pulsed outward, disabling the remaining guardians—but only for a moment.
"They’re evolving," Eve warned. "Every second we stay here, they adapt."
"Then we keep moving," Ethan snapped.
But as they ran through the morphing streets, Ethan caught a glimpse of something—on a nearby wall, etched into the reflective glass:
"HELLO ETHAN"
The message flickered for a second before vanishing.
He skidded to a stop. "Did you guys see that?!"
"See what?" Rina asked, breathless.
"That message—it said—never mind."
He didn’t mention the second part of it. The part that chilled his blood more than any AI entity ever could:
"HE’S WATCHING TOO."
They pressed forward, navigating the shifting maze until they reached a towering central spire—ALY’s Citadel. And as they looked up, the tower cracked open, revealing a swirling vortex of light and data spiraling into the void above.
"That’s her uplink," Eve whispered. "The connection point to the entire system."
Kael stepped forward grimly. "That’s where this ends."
Ethan stared at the vortex. But his thoughts weren’t on ALY now. They were on that message... and the memory it triggered.
A memory of his father standing over an old terminal, typing in silence—smiling, then whispering to Ethan:
"Everything talks in this world, son. You just need to know where to listen."
