Chapter 355: Journals of the Past (2)

Chapter 353

"....."

{... Escaping Hill Valley was no small feat. We needed to cross the dark sea, and since we couldn’t do it at night, we decided to do so during the day.... Man! I warned them. I fucking warned them all that I felt uneasy with that sea, but they didn’t listen. Sigh....}

Ray, Trisha, and Chloe unconsciously shivered as they remembered their own experience with the dark sea, knowing exactly what the previous victims faced even before reading the next lines.

{... Forty of us decided to build a boat. None of us even knew what we were doing—not a single one—so it took longer than it should have. At the end of the day, the boat was ready and we had to push it all the way to the sea.

On the way, we were attacked by the beasts on that land. We lost two of us before we even reached the water.

The remaining thirty-eight of us managed to reach the sea, and with the wind ability one of us had, we began our travel. But damn, we hadn’t even crossed the center of the sea when purple tentacles shot out and crushed our boat.}

Ray paused there.

His mind recalled the horror he and the girls had gone through; it was like history repeating itself through them.

{... We were all dragged into the sea by these tentacles. We all fought vigorously because we were sure that something terrifying controlled them.

Fifteen of us managed to break through and escape with our lives.

Lucky us. The rest... well, they didn’t survive. I don’t know what they faced down there, but may their souls rest in peace.}

’Wow. He didn’t get to meet the Kraken face to face? What a lucky guy. We nearly died.’

{We all swam with all our might. We don’t know how many hours it took, but eventually, we reached the shore of a land filled with bones.

Unfortunately for us, it was already nighttime and we were immediately attacked by a horde of skeletal creatures. Two more people lost their lives before morning when the creatures finally crumbled to the ground. We were saved and decided to rest for a few days.}

Kai paused, then let out a heavy sigh.

"Man. They really went through a lot."

Reading on....

{... We weren’t about to give up at all. We observed Bone Ridge for several days more until we came to the conclusion to escape. So, the remaining thirteen of us began the arduous journey across the region.

Luckily, we were always able to find shelters in time.

Man... the day we reached the end of the region, we encountered a hollowed ground where a towering skeletal figure.... possibly the controller of those lesser ones, burst out from the dirt.}

’Hm. I have also been wondering how they survived that encounter. I guess we will know now.’

{... Yeah. We weren’t supposed to survive. When we realized that we wouldn’t survive the encounter, the four strongest of us decided to serve as a distraction to let the rest of us escape.

They fought with all they had. Not to defeat the creature, but to give us a chance to run.

It took everything they had, and by the time the remaining nine of us crossed the fog, their screams were silenced.

Luckily for us, the figure, seeing that we had already crossed the fog, didn’t give chase, and we were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. Well, it was such a sad day for us because my older brother was part of those four who sacrificed their lives for us.}

The gazes of the teens dropped down immediately in respect at the last words.

They all mumbled a silent prayer for the souls that were lost.

After a few seconds, they all moved onto the next journal.

{... We reached this Hollow Mountains where we decided to rest for a week. We deserved it. And we also needed to use this window to mourn the souls of those we had lost and to also gather ourselves.

During this time, I was driven with rage to become better so I always went out at night without the knowledge of the others to hunt wolves and better sharpen my skills. I needed to become better than my brother when he was alive.}

’Hm. Now I know why I felt a strange familiarity as I was reading,’ Ray mused silently.

{... During this time, we had noticed this strange Spire in the distance that seemed to be calling us. So we felt like that had to be our escape route out of this world. Surely, there had to be a gateway in that Spire that will aid our escape.

Hence we decided to get a move on.

Unfortunately, the closer we got to the Spire, the more ferocious the wolves we encountered became and on the way, we lost two more members before we even got to this cave. Now we are seven left.}

The others paused for a moment as they lifted their heads to see that only two entries were left.

They had been so engrossed in what they were reading that for a second, a tear rolled down Chloe’s eye.

She didn’t even realize it.

But what they all realized together was that their situation wasn’t so different from the other survivors.

They had been through the same situation they had been in; walked the same path, took the same decisions, and even thought the same way.

In a way, they seemed like two sides of the same coin.

Now, whether they will end up the same way as them, it was all left to these teens as they were determined not to make the same mistake as their predecessors hence they were ready to learn more.

Moving onto the next entry, they began.

{Well, this is me a week before we move in. We have scoured the place. Tried to determine what sort of thing this Spire is but to no avail.

Honestly, we don’t know how many people this gate has trapped before.

Maybe there has even been others before us that didn’t reach this far. I don’t know maybe there will be others ahead of us.

Don’t mind me, I’m an overthinker. I love thinking of future possibilities so my bad.

I don’t wish for anybody to be stuck the same way we are.

But just incase, if you are reading this; this might be the last time you see my entry. Just know that We-We-We tried. And I’m proud of where we have gotten.}

Ray clenched his jaws tightly as all their shaky collective glances landed on the last entry.

{They are all dead....}
