Chapter 130: Explode

The name alone was enough to make him pause.

Adrenaline Burst.

His eyes dropped to the description, skimming it once, then again more slowly.

[Upon activation, the user experiences a forty percent increase in acceleration and movement speed for a duration of seven seconds. Activation is phrase-triggered. Cooldown applies.]

Seven seconds. He turned that over in his head.

Simple. Almost embarrassingly so. No elemental surge, no dramatic transformation, no damage multiplier that rewrote the rules of a fight. Just speed. Just seven seconds of it.

And yet.

His mind drifted back to Patrick. To the moment he’d closed the distance with nothing but his zero-element and sheer nerve — no real power behind it, no skill backing him up. Just timing and the willingness to commit. And that had been enough.

’If I had this then...’

He didn’t finish the thought. He didn’t need to. Because he already understood what this skill actually was — not a weapon, but a key. The kind of thing that didn’t win fights on its own but could make everything else click into place. Close the gap before a person processed what was happening. Arrive inside their guard before they decided to raise it. Leave them flustered for half a second, and then make that half-second count.

Simple. Brutally, quietly simple.

He let out a slow breath through his nose.

’Alright. Activation phrase.’

He thought about it for a moment, genuinely. Something short. Something that felt like what the skill was — sudden, committed, without hesitation.

"...Explode," he muttered.

[Activation phrase saved: Explode]

He almost smiled.

He dried off, got dressed, and stepped out of the bathroom into the quiet of the house.

The kitchen was the first stop. He crossed to the stove, lifted the pot lid, and found exactly what he’d been half-expecting — nothing. Cold. Empty. The kind of nothing that had a person’s name written all over it.

He set the lid back down.

’Maria didn’t cook.’

He stood there a moment, looking at the empty pot with an expression that was almost thoughtful. She was going to have to learn. The man of the house left in the morning — food should be waiting. That was just the natural order of things, and if she hadn’t grasped that yet, well. That was what his punishment tool was for.

A slow, mischievous smile crept onto his face despite himself.

He was still constructing exactly how that lesson would go when a knock sounded from the front door.

Soft. Two precise raps.

He turned immediately, the thought dissolving.

’Someone’s here this early?’

His first instinct was to move fast — not out of urgency exactly, but because the last thing he needed was a second knock loud enough to stir Maria awake. Waking her up was his job. His exclusive jurisdiction. That was between him and his punishment tool, and he wasn’t sharing the moment with a stranger at the door.

He crossed the room quickly and pulled it open just before the second knock landed.

And stopped.

His eyes widened.

Standing in the doorway — composed, still, watching him with those calm, unreadable eyes — was the knight. Patrick’s knight. The one who had stood at his side the night of the fight like a shadow given form, saying nothing, missing nothing.

She was saying something now though.

"Hello, Denzel."

The panic hit him first.

It moved through his chest before his mind had even caught up — sharp and electric, the kind that didn’t announce itself, it just arrived. His eyes stayed on her, fixed, as his gaze dropped once in a motion he barely controlled, checking her hands. Her sides. The distance between her fingers and the hilt of her blade.

Nothing drawn. Not yet.

’Wait.’

His thoughts were already moving, tangling over each other.

’Patrick knows where I live. He found out. He actually found out — how? How does someone find out that fast? How does he even—’

He gnashed his teeth.

’I should have finished him off. I had him — I had the moment and my body just...’

He stopped himself. Breathed.

Because panic wasn’t useful. Panic got people killed in their own doorways, and he was not dying in his doorway.

He forced himself to think clearly, to press down through the noise and find the one thing that still gave him footing.

Patrick didn’t know about the ability. Whatever the knight was here for, whatever Patrick had sent her to do — he was walking into this blind to the most important fact on the board. That meant Denzel still had something. Not much. Not enough to feel comfortable. But something.

Then his eyes moved past her, instinctively, back toward the interior of the house.

Maria.

His jaw tightened for a different reason entirely. Before, this was just him. One fight, one outcome, clean and contained. But Maria was in that house asleep, and now he wasn’t just facing Patrick — he was facing Patrick and this knight, and Maria was ten meters behind him and completely unaware.

His gaze returned to her face.

She was watching him with that same expression she’d worn during the fight — simple, docile, almost mild. The kind of face that didn’t give anything away because it had never needed to.

The silence between them stretched.

"You’re going to kill me in my own house?" he said quietly. Then, after a beat: "At least answer me. Where’s Patrick?"

She looked at him for a moment.

Then she laughed.

It wasn’t cruel. It wasn’t performative. It slipped out of her like something genuine — her head tilting slightly, shoulders dropping half an inch, a soft sound that said she found this actually, genuinely funny. Her hand never moved toward her blade.

Denzel’s mouth tightened.

"Explode."

[Activation Phrase Recognized — Adrenaline Burst: Active]

[Duration: 7 seconds]

The shift was immediate and total. The world didn’t slow — he did the opposite of slowing, every signal in his body sharpening into something urgent and precise, his muscles coiling with a readiness that hadn’t been there a breath ago.

He was already moving.

His fist snapped forward — straight, committed, no wind-up — aimed directly at her face.
