Chapter 129: D Rank

The morning sun did not ask permission.

It came anyway, the way it always did — slow and inevitable, thin fingers of gold slipping through the gap in the curtains and stretching across the floor until they found Denzel’s face. The warmth landed first on his jaw, then crept upward, patient and unhurried, pressing against his closed eyelids like a hand too gentle to be ignored.

He stirred.

His lashes flickered once. Twice. Then his eyes dragged themselves open — slow, reluctant, still half-anchored to whatever dark and quiet place sleep had carried him. The ceiling greeted him. Plain. Familiar. Lit now in the pale amber of early morning.

’...How long was I out?’

He let the question sit there in his chest for a moment, unanswered. His body felt heavy in that deep way — not the aching, restless heaviness of a bad night, but the solid, wrung-out heaviness of one that had taken something from him and given something back. Like a cloth that had been soaked through, twisted until dry, and left to settle.

He exhaled slowly through his nose.

"Morning already," he murmured to no one.

Then, almost as an afterthought, he turned his head.

Maria was there.

She lay on her side just a little away from him, one hand curled loosely beneath her cheek, her breathing slow and even. The blanket had slipped — pulled just enough to one side that it draped over the curve of her shoulder and hip, her figure easy to read even in the dim gold of the early light. She wasn’t trying to be anything right now. She was just sleeping. Still here. Still warm.

Denzel’s mouth curved without him deciding it would.

’...She actually stayed.’

He wasn’t sure why that surprised him. Maybe he’d half-expected to wake up to an empty space, to nothing but the indent in the sheets and the faint trace of her presence. That would’ve been the clean version. The version where last night folded itself away neatly and everyone pretended it had simply been a strange dream.

But she was still here.

He looked at her for a moment longer than he probably should have, then let his gaze drift toward the ceiling again. Last night came back in pieces — not all at once, but in layers, the way things do when sleep has done its work. The milky hot sex they had had last night, reminiscent in his mind.

His ribs reminded him of Patrick the moment he tried to sit up.

The ache rolled through him in a slow, grinding wave — not sharp enough to stop him, but present enough to make itself known. A souvenir. He pushed through it, shifting upright with the careful, measured movement of a man who had learned exactly how far he could push before the pain pushed back.

He was still settling when the system announced itself.

[Ding.]

The notification materialized in his vision, clean and crisp and entirely indifferent to the intimacy of the moment.

[Congratulations! Player has completed a Taboo Act.]

[+30 Taboo Points awarded.]

Then, below it — his stats. The full readout, laid out in that flat, clinical system font.

He stared at the numbers for exactly as long as it took him to decide he wasn’t going to make a big deal out of it.

Then he started allocating.

His fingers moved through the floating interface with the easy familiarity of someone who had stopped being impressed by the miracle and started treating it like a tool. Points shifted. Stats climbed. He confirmed without ceremony, and the system chimed its quiet acknowledgment and dissolved.

Denzel swung his legs over the side of the bed.

He moved carefully — ribs still making their opinion known — but he moved. He grabbed what he needed from the floor without looking too hard at Maria’s sleeping curves, because he knew looking would most probably attract him to completing a whole other round. He padded out of the room and pulled the door shut behind him with a soft, deliberate click.

The morning was waiting. He was going to meet it clean.

Denzel soon made his way to the bathroom, hoping to wash up before he got late for work.

The bathroom was small enough that three steps got him to the washbasin in the corner. He set the bucket down beside the water holder, tilted it forward, and let the water pour slow and even until the bucket was heavy enough to work with.

He glanced at the stat window still hovering at the edge of his vision.

The numbers hadn’t changed since he’d first seen them — they didn’t need to. He looked them over once more, calm now in a way he hadn’t quite been when he’d first woken up, and felt something low and quiet settle in his chest. Not pride exactly. Something steadier than that.

’Not bad,’ he thought. ’Not bad at all.’

He’d come a long way since his first sex with Maria. The thought almost made him smile — almost — but it was immediately followed by the one that had been sitting at the back of his mind since he’d opened his eyes.

Sofia.

The smile didn’t happen.

He stripped off his clothes, hanging them alongside his towel on the window’s metal bars before returning to the bucket. Cool water splashed over his skin as he began to wash.

But his mind stayed elsewhere. He still didn’t know where she kept going. It wasn’t his business — yet his curiosity had already gotten the better of him.

’Next time,’ he decided, scrubbing water across the back of his neck, ’I follow her. Whatever she’s hiding, I’m going to find out.’

He left it there. Filed it away. There was work today — the massage parlor wouldn’t open itself — and he wasn’t the kind of man who let unresolved things eat his whole morning. Besides, he still had to find out the truth about Tara.

As he spilled the last of the bathing water over his skin, he reached for his towel which he carried when he entered, but then.

[Ding.]

[The System has observed Player’s diligence and continued commitment to completing Taboo Acts.]

[Player has demonstrated true marathon endurance.]

[As recognition of this achievement, the System will reward Player with one D-Rank Skill.]

Denzel went still.

The bucket. The morning. All of it stopped.

A D-Rank skill.

"...Holy shit," he said quietly.

He just stood there, water dripping from his hands, the notification glowing in the cramped little bathroom like it hadn’t just rearranged everything. His mouth had opened at some point. He didn’t remember closing it.

’Finally...hopefully this one is a reasonable skill at the very least.’

His mind was already moving — racing through what that meant, what it could do, how it changed a fight, changed his odds. He hadn’t been close. Hadn’t even been tracking for it. And now here it was, sitting in front of him like the system had been watching him the whole time and decided, quietly, that he’d earned it.

He exhaled. Steadied himself.

’Alright. Let’s see it.’

The window shifted, text rearranging into something clean and deliberate.
