Chapter 10: Rabbit King

"You’ve acquired Skill—Light Refraction."

As soon as this message emerged, the two lights representing Dark Veil and Wind Blessing vanished, replaced by another, considerably brighter one.

At the same time, Aurelius felt that these two abilities—which he had just learned—had disappeared from his mind too.

As his gaze moved onto the Player Panel and focused on this new skill, its description instantly popped up.

As he went through the description and felt his ability to activate Light Refraction with a mere thought, Aurelius’ eyes brightened.

He had previously gone through the two skills’ descriptions.

Dark Veil allowed him to slightly reduce his own presence, while Wind Blessing subtly increased his speed.

Light Refraction appeared to have inherited the advantages of both. Moreover, it even built upon these traits and strengthened them even further.

’It seems that the description caused me to underestimate Synthesis.’

’Its effects are even more powerful than I imagined.’

The final result was extremely suitable for his current circumstances.

He already possessed two attack skills, and what he needed the most were auxiliary and defensive Talents and skills.

Light Refraction could perfectly play that role.

Thinking of this, Aurelius couldn’t help but take a second look at the Skills column.

As his gaze landed on Spirit Bullet and the rest of his Class skills, he had the urge to cast Synthesis and make a bet.

Aurelius took a deep breath and calmed down.

He didn’t rush to do anything else, but decided to get familiar with his newfound skills.

First, Light Refraction.

As he activated it, Aurelius sensed the light surrounding him bend around his body and conceal him.

As he looked at himself in the mirror, he discovered that although his figure was clearly there, his outline had now become blurry.

His facial features were impossible to make out, as though he was wearing a veil.

Time slowly passed.

As the day went by, the mansion became increasingly noisy. The maids got to work as even Elena returned from her morning outing.

As the evening approached, Aurelius had a meal with his mother before leaving the mansion once again.

This time, however, he didn’t alert anyone.

A blurry figure could be seen gliding through the colorful garden.

Seemingly familiar with the surrounding landscape, it slipped through the blind spots in the guards’ watch, slowly but surely making its way out of the mansion.

It didn’t take long.

A few minutes later, the figure had appeared across the street.

After it looked around sneakily, as if surveying its surroundings, the light around it retracted.

Its true appearance was revealed. It was none other than Aurelius, who, having used Light Refraction, had managed to sneak off.

Recalling the previous sensation of being next to the guards but them being unable to see him, Aurelius couldn’t help but nod his head in satisfaction.

Reaching into the bag hanging behind his back, he took out a silver mask and a hood and placed them on his face and shoulders respectively.

Then, after taking a final glance at the mansion in the distance, he hurriedly walked away.

The surroundings were familiar.

Looking at the forest around him, which he had visited less than 24 hours ago, Aurelius felt both nervous and excited.

Nervous because this time there were no guards accompanying him. Excited because he could "farm" some Experience and Level Up.

Aurelius cautiously stepped into the forest.

He recalled the lessons he had learned yesterday and followed the instructions he had managed to get out of the guards.

First rule while hunting monsters: one should remain cautious at all times. Possessing maturity beyond his apparent age, Aurelius already had this trait.

Second rule: one should always remain hidden. As Light Refraction was activated, his figure merged with the surrounding trees and lush plants.

He walked deeper.

Although his pace was slower since he was all alone, it only took him a quarter of an hour to reach the clearing where they had encountered the Red Hare Rabbits.

Recalling the Rabbit Killer Title he possessed, and the pitiful Experience these monsters provided, Aurelius spun around and was ready to leave.

But just then, his footsteps halted.

Words materialized in front of him.

"Ding! Mission Issued!"

"Mission—Rabbit Foe: Hunt one hundred Red Hare Rabbits."

"Rewards: 600 EXP. Relic Recipe: Red Hare Armor."

Aurelius grumbled inwardly.

But looking at the handsome promised rewards, he immediately accepted the mission.

His body turned around.

He entered the clearing once more, planning to search for a Red Hare Rabbit.

Initially, Aurelius thought the search would last for a while and that he would have to get familiar with the landscape.

But just as he had taken a couple of steps, a blur of red flashed in the corner of his field of vision.

The familiar interface emerged as he focused, though it quickly faded away when Aurelius slashed at it with a dagger.

However, he didn’t have time to celebrate the kill.

Before he could lean down to examine the corpse, a second blur of red light appeared, then a third, and a fourth one.

Aurelius nearly cursed. He had to admit that he might have underestimated the Rabbit Killer Title.

Even so, he didn’t have any fear.

Red Hare Rabbits were inherently weak. Combined with the effects of this Title and his own abilities, he was able to slaughter them with ease.

The number in the Mission section soared at a speed visible to the naked eye.

1, 2, 5, 10.

Shortly afterward, it had jumped to just short of fifty while the area around Aurelius was filled with rabbit corpses.

After that, no other Red Hare Rabbit came near.

Aurelius seemed to have successfully wiped out their little colony.

Or at least, that was what he thought.

A moment after the silence settled, he came to realize that the rabbits had not disappeared because of him, but because of something else.

As he turned around and focused his gaze on a blurry outline, a red prompt flashed, as though warning him of the danger.
