Chapter 1399: Chapter 1399: Interesting Couple

In the only remaining beautiful eye he had left, there was an overwhelming sense of confusion after being profoundly shaken, so much so that he completely forgot the purpose of his stalking.

"Is it possible to change a fate that has been predetermined since the very beginning?" he whispered softly, as if sinking into an endless abyss of bewilderment.

Ye Lu’s words also stirred many thoughts within him, reminding him of things he had never dared to contemplate before.

He had never considered betraying the Godfather or leaving the organization. Since the moment he was born, that was how he lived—trained to be an exceptional assassin, drenched in blood, with no sense of self and no need for self.

The Godfather had told him: Your purpose for existing is to kill. Your goal is to take lives. You don’t need to think about anything else in your life; just keep killing—kill relentlessly, and that is enough.

At first, he too was overcome with fear, even vomiting at the sight of blood.

But later, he grew accustomed to it. And then, after a time, his heart stopped feeling altogether.

He believed that his life would continue like this forever. Carrying no ambitions, desiring nothing, numb to everything, an obedient dog walking through a life predetermined from the start.

He had never thought that he could change this or that he could live an entirely different kind of life.

Yet Ye Lu’s impassioned words, in a certain moment, stirred something deep within his heart—the faint traces of a dream that had long been extinguished by the passage of time. Once, he fantasized about standing quietly under the sunlight, smiling like a normal person, rather than being a rat in a dark gutter.

Shadow covered his remaining eye with his hand, and a single tear slipped from the corner of his eye.

"So, I do have dreams too."

Before, he had no pursuit, nor did he feel there was anything in this world worth striving for. After all, he had controlled the lives of so many others; could riches and power possibly outweigh the value of life itself? Yet the lives he held in his hands were like garbage to him. What, then, was there worth pursuing?

He thought he had taken hold of the things most precious. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

But tonight, he realized he had been wrong.

More precious than life itself is love!

A deep-seated love willing to endure everything, even sacrifice life itself.

He watched Ye Lu, for Third Young Master Jun, risk everything—prepared to sacrifice her own life—all for the chance to create even the slightest hope for Third Young Master Jun to continue living.

His rigid heart quivered. If someone in this world could also be willing to fight to the death for him...

Perhaps, this kind of goal in life is better, far better, than a numb obsession with murder.

...

Ye Lu naturally did not know that she had accidentally altered the life trajectory of a demon. When she hurriedly brought Dr. K back,

Third Young Master Jun had already passed through the worst phase of his withdrawal. He lay weakly on the bed, his hands and feet tied so tightly that they were streaked with blood. One could imagine the excruciating pain he had experienced during the earlier bout, and Ye Lu’s heart ached at the sight.

She rushed up and used a towel to wipe clean his face and sweat.

He kept his eyes tightly closed, his face pale as death, his lips white to the point of purple. He was clearly exhausted and unconscious.

Ji Mo stood there silently, an expression of deep thought on his face.

Hearing footsteps behind Ye Lu, he turned to see Dr. K and revealed a look of utter astonishment. This troublesome, unwilling-to-cooperate bastard had actually been persuaded by Ye Lu. Truly incredible!

"Why are you looking at me like I’m some kind of monster?" Dr. K grumbled, clearly dissatisfied and feeling a little embarrassed. After being stubbornly unyielding, he had still ended up coming after all, essentially slapping himself in the face.

Ji Mo, however, smiled sincerely. "No, I’m just happy for you. At long last, you’ve decided to step out of your inner demons—that’s a good thing. That couple, they really are fascinating individuals."

One refuses to give up even in the face of death; the other resolves to protect their partner to the very end.
