Chapter 1398: Chapter 1398 Hope

Ye Lu leaned wearily against the wall, tears glistening in her eyes: "I rushed over like a madwoman in the dead of night, driving recklessly, hoping to win your sympathy. But with a heart as cold and unyielding as yours, maybe sympathy isn’t something you even possess. Then I thought yelling and questioning you might wake you up. If that doesn’t work, I’ll use all my money to buy you off, but you still remain unmoved. What do I do? I can’t give up. If all else fails, I’ll use truth, kindness, and beauty to touch you. Is humanity innately evil? Yet I refuse to stop believing it’s innately good!"

Dr. K stared at her, his expression practically mocking her like she was an idiot. Waking up the tiny shred of humanity left in him—was that what she wanted?

"What if truth, kindness, and beauty fail to touch me? What else can you do?"

He was curious to see what other tricks she had. Human effort has its limits, and he didn’t believe she wouldn’t eventually despair.

"If that happens, then there’s only one last move left."

Ye Lu wiped away her tears and pulled a gun from her pocket. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Dr. K’s face instantly changed.

His expression turned angry as he let out a mocking laugh: "What? You couldn’t bribe or convince me, so now you’re resorting to threatening me with your life?"

This was the stupidest, most contemptible thing she could have done, completely obliterating the little shred of compassion he’d felt just moments before.

He had been wavering, genuinely considering helping her.

The sound of a gun’s safety clicking off echoed.

Dr. K’s expression turned even darker.

"What you hold in your hands isn’t just one life—it’s four." Ye Lu lifted the gun without hesitation and pressed it firmly against her temple. "My husband’s, mine, and the lives of my two unborn children."

Dr. K stared at her in shock, utterly dumbfounded.

"Dr. K, is treating a sick child the only way to save lives? Can’t you reach out to help healthy, pain-free children too? If he dies, my four children will lose their father. If you save him, your generosity will grant four children complete lives—happiness. You wouldn’t just be saving five people; you’d be saving six!" Ye Lu’s eyes brimmed with pleading hope.

Dr. K stayed silent for a long time.

Finally.

"I’m defeated by you. You really are a remarkable woman."

Someone capable of speaking such earth-shattering words, and making such earth-shattering sacrifices—she refused to let go of hope, even at the risk of her life.

He wasn’t touched by any sense of morality. He was simply overwhelmed by her resolve, her sheer determination.

It sparked an ember of hope within him as well.

He had always believed his fate was set in stone—that he was destined to live the rest of his life burdened by guilt and seeking redemption. But now, he suddenly thought maybe his life didn’t have to be hopeless. Perhaps it was time to let go of the past and face everything head-on.

"Thank you." Ye Lu broke into tears of joy, disbelief etched across her face that she had actually succeeded.

Dr. K scoffed: "Thank me for what? You forced me into this. You should be thanking yourself, and thank Ling Kong and the others—so many came to plead for you."

Even that brat Ling Kong offered to exchange his own treatment for Third Young Master Jun’s treatment.

They’re all insane lunatics without regard for their own lives!

But perhaps it’s because of fools like them that this world feels so vibrant and unpredictable.

"Let’s hurry up and go already."

Ye Lu grabbed him in her excitement, dragging him toward the exit.

Dr. K grumbled: "Can you let me change out of my pajamas first? And let’s get one thing straight. I can’t guarantee I’ll save him, but I’ll do everything I can."

Ye Lu bit her lip: "No matter the outcome, I won’t blame you."

After they left, a dark and enigmatic figure emerged silently from the shadows of the floor.
