Chapter 336: What we have been waiting for

Just as Gu Heng was about to continue explaining his next move to Fu Lianhua, a sharp vibration broke the silence of the room.

His phone buzzed twice on the polished table, the screen lighting up against the dim yellow glow of the chandelier.

He frowned.

Only a handful of people had this number.

Fu Lianhua looked at him nervously. "Who is it?"

He didn’t answer. Instead, he reached for the phone, his expression darkening the moment he saw the name on the screen.

Private Investigator – Mr. Zhao.

The man he had hired weeks ago.

Back when the tides had started turning in Fu Jing Rong’s favor, Gu Heng had ordered Zhao to dig into every corner of his rival’s life—to find anything that could be used against him. A secret, a weakness, a woman, anything that could be turned into leverage.

Now, seeing Zhao’s name flash on his screen at such a moment, a flicker of curiosity sparked in his chest.

He swiped to answer.

"Speak," Gu Heng said, his tone low and controlled.

On the other side, Zhao’s voice came through, deep and steady but tinged with a strange edge.

"Sir... I’ve found something."

Gu Heng straightened slightly in his chair. "What is it?"

There was a short pause, a crackle of static. Then Zhao’s voice came again—calm, almost eerie.

"Look at your gallery."

The line went dead.

Gu Heng frowned. "What?" he muttered under his breath.

Fu Lianhua, who had been watching him intently, stepped closer. "What’s wrong? What did he say?"

Without replying, Gu Heng opened his phone’s gallery. For a few seconds, the screen was blank—then, suddenly, a stream of new images appeared, each one sharp and detailed.

He scrolled slowly.

And then he froze.

The first image hit him like a slap.

It was Fu Jing Rong.

Even in a still photograph, the man’s presence radiated power. He was standing near a black car, his features as cold and composed as ever, but his hand—his hand was holding that of a woman.

Gu Heng’s eyes narrowed.

He swiped to the next photo.

Then another.

Each one showed the same thing: Fu Jing Rong and the woman. Sometimes walking together, sometimes sitting at a quiet café, sometimes laughing under the evening light.

And in every single frame—

that woman was right beside him.

Gu Heng leaned closer to the screen. The woman was stunning—no, more than stunning. She had an ethereal beauty, the kind that made heads turn even in a crowd. Her hair fell gracefully over her shoulders, her posture delicate yet commanding.

But there was something else.

Something about her eyes.

He zoomed in. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Her gaze, even in the photograph, seemed to pierce through the glass of the screen. There was a faint curve to her lips, but her eyes—her eyes were cold, almost unnerving.

For reasons he couldn’t quite place, a chill ran down his spine.

He had seen many women before, and most of them could be read easily—greed, envy, love, desperation. But this woman... she was unreadable.

Her beauty was almost too perfect, too poised.

And beneath it, there was something dark.

A flicker of recognition stirred in his memory.

"Where have I seen her before...?" he muttered to himself.

Fu Lianhua tilted her head, stepping closer to peek at the screen. "Who is that?"

"I don’t know," Gu Heng said slowly, his brows furrowing. "But she looks... familiar."

He scrolled to another picture. In this one, Fu Jing Rong was sitting at a park bench, his arm loosely draped around the woman’s shoulders. The way he looked at her—gentle, relaxed, almost soft—was a sight Gu Heng had never thought possible.

A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Well, well..." he murmured. "So the great Fu Jing Rong... can fall in love."

He chuckled lowly, the sound laced with both mockery and intrigue.

Fu Lianhua blinked in disbelief. "That’s impossible. He’s always been so cold—he doesn’t even smile."

Gu Heng nodded slowly. "Exactly. That’s what makes this interesting."

He zoomed in again, studying Fu Jing Rong’s expression. In one picture, the man was smiling faintly—a rare, genuine smile that reached his eyes. It wasn’t the polite smirk he showed to the world, but something deeper, warmer.

The kind of smile a man wore when he let his guard down completely.

It was almost shocking.

"This..." Gu Heng muttered under his breath, "this is the first time I’ve seen that man look human."

Fu Lianhua’s lips tightened. "Who is she? Do you think she’s someone from the Fu family? A socialite?"

"Doesn’t matter who she is," Gu Heng said with a lazy, confident drawl. "What matters is that she means something to him."

He leaned back against the couch, his thumb brushing the edge of the phone as he flipped through more images—each one capturing a different angle, a different expression.

Fu Jing Rong holding her hand.

Fu Jing Rong looking at her with unmistakable affection.

Fu Jing Rong laughing.

The man looked... alive.

Gu Heng couldn’t help but grin, his earlier tension melting into amusement.

"So the demon has a heart after all," he whispered. "How ironic."

He could already feel the pieces falling into place in his mind.

If Fu Jing Rong had a woman he truly cared about—someone who could shake that fortress of calm he lived in—then perhaps, just perhaps, he had finally found his enemy’s weak spot.

"Got it," he said quietly, his eyes glinting with malicious delight.

Fu Lianhua frowned. "Got what?"

Gu Heng turned the phone toward her, showing her the picture where Fu Jing Rong’s arm was around the mysterious woman.

"This," he said. "This is what we’ve been waiting for."

He stood up slowly, the corners of his lips curving into a dangerous smile.

He had tried so long to find Fu Jing Rong’s weakness to no avail but right now, it had fallen directly on his lap!

"Fu Jing Rong... you’ve hidden your heart well," he murmured, almost to himself. "But now that I’ve found it... let’s see how well you can protect it."
