Chapter 57: Silver Vanguard
The terrifying magical shockwave that obliterated the heavy adamantine doors carried a gravitational weight that forced Leon to plant his boots firmly into the marble floor just to remain standing.
The air grew incredibly thick and hard to breathe as a dark suffocating aura spilled out from the Patriarch’s private study.
This was not the fiery heat of a Master or the freezing chill of the Ice Queen. This was a localized distortion of reality that signaled the presence of a true apex predator.
Leon instinctively stepped backward and shielded Beatrice from the flying debris using his broad muscular frame.
The Head Maid gripped the back of his torn tunic with trembling fingers her icy blue eyes wide with genuine horror as she stared at the ruined entrance of her master’s sanctuary.
"The Vanguard," Beatrice whispered her voice barely audible over the settling dust. "The elite knights of House Sterling are making their final stand inside the study."
Leon activated his newly acquired Aura Tracking skill to peer through the thick cloud of pulverized stone. The skill provided a highly detailed thermal and magical map of the battlefield illuminating the chaotic clash of monumental powers occurring just beyond the threshold.
He could clearly see several massive bright silver signatures desperately fighting against a single sprawling entity made of jagged black shadows.
"Stay behind me Lady Beatrice," Leon commanded in a low resonant tone projecting his Intimidation Aura to help steady her fraying nerves.
He slowly advanced toward the shattered doorway keeping his kinetic infused ironwood sword raised in a flawless defensive guard.
They reached the jagged threshold and looked into the sprawling opulent study. The room was a massive circular chamber lined with priceless artifacts and heavy mahogany furniture but it was currently reduced to a catastrophic war zone.
Slumped on a grand high backed throne near the massive bay windows was the Patriarch of House Sterling.
The elderly nobleman was unconscious and his pale skin was covered in a sickening dark purple webbing indicating he had been struck by the same highly lethal poison that had nearly killed Seraphina in the woods.
Defending the poisoned Patriarch were six towering figures clad in heavy mastercrafted silver armor.
These were the Sterling Vanguard the elite protectors of the noble family. Every single knight in the room was a Tier Five or Tier Six Master possessing decades of refined martial experience and devastating aura techniques.
Leading the desperate defense was Commander Vance a massive scarred veteran wielding a glowing runic greatsword. The commander’s silver aura blazed like a miniature sun as he coordinated complex tactical strikes with his highly disciplined lieutenants.
They moved with flawless synergistic precision launching devastating waves of concentrated magical energy at the intruder standing in the center of the room.
The intruder was a tall slender man wearing the dark elegant robes of the Eclipse Syndicate.
He did not wield a scythe or a sword. He stood with his hands clasped casually behind his back while a sprawling manifestation of jagged black shadowy serpents violently whipped around his body.
This was a Grandmaster who had achieved true Aura Manifestation and the sheer disparity in power was horrifying to witness.
Commander Vance let out a deafening battle cry and leaped into the air bringing his heavy runic greatsword crashing down with enough kinetic force to cleave a fortress wall.
Two of his elite lieutenants flanked the attack thrusting their glowing spears to seal the Grandmaster’s escape routes.
The Syndicate leader merely sighed in mild annoyance. He did not dodge or attempt to block the coordinated assault.
The jagged black shadow serpents sprouting from his back instinctively surged forward acting with terrifying autonomous precision. The shadows violently deflected the glowing spears and slammed heavily into Commander Vance’s chest blasting the massive knight backward across the room with effortless ease.
Leon watched the brutal exchange with a cold calculating gaze.
He realized his massive one hundred and thirty points of Strength and one hundred and fifty five points of Agility were impressive but they were fundamentally useless against a man who could manifest an autonomous magical defense system.
The Vanguard knights were landing solid tactical strikes that would instantly vaporize a normal man but the Grandmaster’s shadow domain simply absorbed the damage like a bottomless abyss.
Beatrice let out a desperate choked sob as she watched the elite protectors of her home being systematically battered into the marble floor.
She summoned a swirling orb of jagged ice spikes into her palms intending to rush into the study and join the suicidal fray to protect her Patriarch.
Leon immediately reached out and firmly grabbed her slender wrist stopping her reckless advance.
The crystal bell chimed frantically in his skull projecting a glowing pink text box right in front of her pale tear stained face.
[Emergency Tactical Quest Issued: The Restraining Order]
[Context: The Ice Queen is blinded by her fierce loyalty and is about to throw her life away against an opponent she cannot scratch. A true protector knows when to hold his woman back for her own safety. Assert your physical dominance and keep her grounded.]
[Objective: Pull her forcefully against your side, wrap your arm tightly around her waist, and whisper that she does not have permission to die.]
[Reward: +20 Mana, Skill ’Kinetic Domain (Minor)’, 300 Shameless Points.]
[Failure Penalty: Beatrice breaks free and is instantly impaled by a shadow serpent resulting in a gruesome tragic death that permanently ends her romantic arc.]
Leon forcefully yanked her backward utilizing his massive Strength to effortlessly overpower her struggling form.
He pulled her flush against his side and wrapped his strong right arm tightly around her narrow waist locking her securely against his hip.
Beatrice gasped and struggled weakly against his iron grip but her depleted magical reserves and his physical superiority rendered her efforts useless.
"Let me go Leon," Beatrice pleaded in a broken whisper while tears spilled freely over her wire rimmed glasses. "I have to help them."
"I saved your life and it belongs to me now Beatrice," Leon murmured deeply directly into her ear projecting a heavy magnetic authority that demanded absolute submission. "I do not give you permission to throw it away. We wait for an opening."
[Quest Completed Successfully!]
[The Ice Queen remains safely secured by your side.]
[Distributing Rewards: +20 Mana, Skill ’Kinetic Domain (Minor)’ Acquired, 300 Shameless Points.]
A sudden refreshing wave of cool magical energy flooded his expanded core.
The newly acquired Kinetic Domain skill burned into his mind granting him the highly coveted ability to project a small localized area of raw kinetic pressure around his body.
It was a minor foundational step toward true aura manifestation and it provided the exact defensive utility he needed to survive the escalating nightmare in the Patriarch’s study.
The Grandmaster casually brushed a speck of dust from his dark robes and looked down at the battered Vanguard knights struggling to rise from the ruined floor.
"You Sterling dogs are remarkably resilient," the Syndicate leader noted in a smooth echoing voice that carried a chilling sadistic amusement. "But I have grown terribly bored of this pathetic dance. It is time to end this little family lineage."
The air pressure in the study instantly violently skyrocketed as the Grandmaster finally stopped playing around and prepared to unleash the full terrifying scope of his manifested domain.
