Chapter 55: Freezing Library and the Syndicate Assassin
The grand marble staircase leading to the upper wing was a treacherous battlefield littered with shattered armor and deep scorch marks.
Leon utilized his massive Agility to scale the steps three at a time bypassing the chaotic skirmishes between the estate guards and the invading mercenaries.
He focused his enhanced senses and tracked the dense suffocating magical pressure radiating from the eastern corridor.
The air grew incredibly cold the closer he got to the grand library.
A thick layer of jagged frost coated the expensive silken paintings and the polished stone floors. However the freezing temperature was actively fighting a losing battle against a highly aggressive wave of blistering heat.
Leon rounded the final corner and found the heavy gilded doors of the library blown completely off their hinges.
Inside the massive reading room a devastating magical duel was tearing the ancient archives apart. Floating runic orbs flickered erratically casting chaotic shadows over the towering wooden bookshelves.
Standing near the restricted historical section was Beatrice. The Head Maid looked incredibly ragged. Her pristine uniform was scorched and torn along the hem.
A shallow bleeding cut marred her pale cheek and her wire rimmed glasses were slightly askew. She was currently projecting a massive thick wall of solid glacial ice attempting to barricade the corridor leading to the Patriarch’s private study.
Attacking her relentless defenses was a tall imposing Syndicate assassin wearing dark crimson robes. He wielded a pair of short curved blades that blazed with intense concentrated fire magic.
The man was a Tier Five Master possessing a highly refined aura that actively melted Beatrice’s icy barricade with every devastating strike.
"Your persistence is truly annoying Head Maid," the assassin sneered while launching a massive volley of searing fireballs directly at her crystalline shield. "The Grandmaster is already inside the study handling your pathetic Patriarch. Just drop the ice and I will grant you a swift death."
Beatrice gritted her teeth and pushed more of her depleting mana into the freezing wall.
Her internal reserves were running dangerously low and her limbs trembled under the immense magical strain. She knew she could not hold the high tier fire mage off forever but her strict loyalty forbade her from yielding a single inch of ground.
The assassin laughed mockingly and crossed his blazing blades preparing to unleash a massive highly concentrated inferno designed to vaporize the ice and the woman standing behind it.
Leon did not hesitate. He channeled his massive magical core and activated his newly acquired Kinetic Shockwave. He stomped his right leather boot violently into the marble floor.
A devastating invisible tremor ripped through the grand library. The sheer concussive force shattered the nearby windows and knocked the towering bookshelves off balance.
The localized earthquake violently disrupted the assassin’s footing forcing the man to stumble backward and cancel his lethal fire spell.
Beatrice gasped in pure shock and turned her head. Her icy blue eyes widened in profound relief as she recognized the rugged muscular frame and the dark magnetic eyes of her Upper Wing Attendant stepping through the ruined doorway.
The crystal bell chimed beautifully in his skull projecting a glowing pink text box right above the melting ice wall.
[Quest Issued: The Ice Queen’s Shield]
[Context: The fiercely strict Head Maid is exhausted and facing certain death. She desperately needs a hero to step into the flames for her. Claim your position as her undisputed protector.]
[Objective: Step boldly through the melting ice, wrap your arm firmly around her waist, pull her against your chest.]
[Reward: +20 Agility, Skill ’Kinetic Barrier’, 300 Shameless Points.]
[Failure Penalty: The Host will suffer a violent uncontrollable sneezing fit directly into the burning inferno ruining your heroic entrance and alerting the enemy to your exact position.]
Leon fluidly drew his ironwood practice sword and infused it heavily with his kinetic mana. He utilized his Aura Step to instantly cross the vast reading room bypassing the pools of melting water and the scattered burning tomes.
He materialized directly beside Beatrice just as her icy barricade finally shattered into a million glittering fragments under the residual heat.
Leon smoothly reached out and wrapped his strong left arm firmly around her narrow waist. He forcefully pulled her exhausted body backward trapping her securely against his broad chest.
He raised his infused wooden sword and effortlessly parried a stray wave of rogue fire magic sending the flames harmlessly crashing into the ceiling.
Beatrice let out a soft highly scandalous squeak as she was abruptly pulled into his warm secure embrace. The sheer overwhelming relief of his sudden arrival violently clashed with the intense flustered heat pooling in her lower stomach.
"You are late Leon," Beatrice whispered breathlessly while leaning heavily against his solid torso. Her Lie Detector aura wildly flared with blinding flashes of deep romantic gratitude and highly confused submission.
"I apologize Lady Beatrice," Leon murmured deeply his lips hovering mere inches from her ear. "I was busy handling the lower courtyard but I must admit I truly missed your cold attitude."
[Quest Completed Successfully!]
[Your nasal passages remain perfectly clear and heroic.]
[Distributing Rewards: +20 Agility, Skill ’Kinetic Barrier’ Acquired, 300 Shameless Points.]
A sudden explosive surge of weightless energy flooded his legs pushing his total Agility to an astronomical one hundred and fifty five points. The new skill provided him with the knowledge required to mold his kinetic aura into a dense external shield perfectly complementing his close quarters combat style.
The Syndicate assassin recovered his footing and glared at the new arrival. He inspected Leon’s ragged bloodstained uniform and his basic wooden weapon letting out a loud condescending scoff.
"A common servant coming to play hero?" the Tier Five Master mocked while reigniting his blazing curved blades. "You are going to burn alongside the maid boy."
Leon gently pushed Beatrice behind him placing his sturdy body directly between the Ice Queen and the lethal fire mage. He gripped his ironwood sword tightly and allowed a dark predatory smirk to spread across his handsome face.
"I highly doubt that," Leon replied in a chillingly calm voice.
He tapped into his massive core and erected a highly pressurized Kinetic Barrier around his body preparing to test his monstrous physical stats against a true aristocratic killer.
