Chapter 490: Chapter 314: Ningning Agrees to Be Hired by Chen Yuan, the Office Becomes a Sweet Nest? Jiang Yao Faints from Anger
She pouted, crying uncontrollably. Chen Yuan chuckled as he comforted her, taking a tissue to dry the tears streaming down her cheeks.
The tears fell so thick and fast that he scrambled to wipe them away.
"You’re crying so hard. If Ningning comes over, she’ll think I’m abusing you. People will get the wrong idea. Yaoyao, let’s not cry anymore. Try to stop, okay? Just a little."
"I can’t stop! Why did you have to give me a gift out of nowhere? You should’ve told me beforehand so I could’ve been prepared."
"Alright, alright. I promise I’ll tell you in advance next time."
"Forget it," Jiang Yao said, her voice hoarse. "Don’t give me any more gifts. And if you do, they can’t be this expensive. You need to save the money you work so hard for and use it when you really need it."
She added in a small, hesitant voice, "I could never bear to spend my Young Master’s money."
As she said this, Jiang Yao’s emotions stabilized a little. She sniffled a few times, then lowered her head to examine the exquisite wristwatch.
It was true that she disapproved of Chen Yuan spending money so frivolously, but the adoring look in her eyes was just as real.
She gently traced the sharp, elegant edges with her fingertip and turned the dazzling dial. The way the numerous diamonds sparkled on such a delicate watch was truly captivating. What woman doesn’t love luxurious jewelry?
Besides, this was a gift from Chen Yuan.
As these thoughts ran through her mind, Jiang Yao looked up at Chen Yuan and let out a little laugh. The tear-stained ugliness on her face vanished in an instant, replaced by a spring-like bloom on her rosy cheeks. She pressed warm kisses to Chen Yuan’s forehead, cheek, and lips.
The sweet scent of lemon tea wafted from her lips.
"Thank you, Young Master. I love it. This gift means so much. I’ll take good care of it, and on the day I marry you," Jiang Yao said softly, wiggling her wrist and looking him in the eye, "I’ll wear it for you."
"I’d like that. It’ll look beautiful with a wedding dress."
"It’s a deal."
Chen Yuan and Jiang Yao exchanged a smile, whispering to each other in the small, cozy bedroom.
"But whatever you do, don’t tell Ningning I bought you a gift. If she finds out, she’s bound to feel hurt. This will be our little secret, alright?" Chen Yuan said, hesitating and lowering his voice.
"Don’t worry, Young Master. My lips are sealed." Jiang Yao covered her mouth with her hand, giggling as she readily agreed.
"Good."
Chen Yuan finally relaxed. He watched Jiang Yao’s happy expression, a calm and serene smile on his face. ’Now I just need to find the right time to pull the same trick with Ningning,’ he thought.
Because of the gift, the plan Yaoyao and her sister had made—to confront Chen Yuan about who he would choose as soon as he returned—was put on hold. Jiang Yao had completely forgotten about it; she had no time to worry about such things now.
She was too busy being affectionate with her Young Master.
’Besides,’ she thought, ’Chen Yuan gave this expensive gift only to me. Doesn’t that already answer the question?’
’Asking now would just be redundant.’
Some things don’t need to be said; they can be understood through actions. When a person enjoys the privilege of being favored, they suddenly become much more magnanimous.
After giving the gift, Chen Yuan knew he couldn’t stay in Jiang Yao’s room for too long. Worried Ningning might get suspicious, he took his medicine and immediately went back to the living room.
He had no idea.
That after he left, Jiang Yao—who had already taken off the watch and hidden it in its jewelry box—cracked her door open again. She watched until Chen Yuan was out of sight, then hurried over to the drawer beneath her computer desk and took the box out once more.
She opened the box.
Jiang Yao gingerly took out the gift, admiring it.
She sat down in her gaming chair and held up the watch. Like a child with a new toy, she couldn’t get enough of it, turning it over and examining it from every angle, an unconcealable smile plastered on her face.
...
In the kitchen, Jiang Ning’s busy silhouette was visible behind the frosted glass door. Her hair was tied up, and she wore an apron.
Beautiful people look good in anything. Even though the apron was ordinary—just a common household one of slightly better quality—Jiang Ning somehow wore it with an air of warmth and tranquility.
A strand of hair fell across her face as she looked down. When she lifted her head again, the round, moon-like ceiling light reflected in her bright eyes.
Chen Yuan watched her quietly, savoring the moment. It felt as if simply looking at Ningning could melt away the day’s exhaustion.
Jiang Ning was completely focused on her cooking, her movements methodical. The spoons and chopsticks she switched between moved in her hands with magical dexterity. Water gushed from the faucet, rinsing her delicate fingertips and making them flush a healthy pink.
She never wore nail polish, as it would get in the way of her reading and cooking. Her nails were always neatly trimmed, and faint blue veins were visible beneath the pale skin on the back of her hands.
She was so focused that she didn’t even notice Chen Yuan standing on the other side of the glass door.
Not until he slid the door open a crack and took a deep sniff.
"What’s that amazing smell?" Chen Yuan swallowed.
"I saw an old woman selling spring bamboo shoots at a street stall yesterday," Jiang Ning said softly, glancing up at him. "They were freshly dug, with bits of dead leaves and dirt still on the bottom. I could smell how fresh they were just by leaning in. When I peeled one back, it was perfectly tender, so I bought them to make a spring bamboo and ham soup. You and Yaoyao are in for a treat."
"Spring bamboo and ham soup? Just the name sounds delicious."
The whole kitchen was filled with a vibrant, savory aroma that made you want to breathe it in again and again.
It wasn’t that Chen Yuan had never had good food. But anyone who’s lived in a small county town knows you tend to eat the same few things in rotation all year round.
Pumpkin soup, winter melon soup, congee, and locust flower soup; stir-fried bean sprouts, stir-fried cabbage, stir-fried green beans, and stir-fried chicken.
