Chapter 402: 402. The lab
Asher stared at his system interface. He had around 500 Pleasure Points left after using his skill. In this human realm, 500 PP went much further than it did back in the fantasy world, but earning it here was far harder. Fortunately, thanks to his intimacy with Loona, he’d managed to farm a decent stash.
He slipped into his combat boots and pulled the laces tight, listening carefully through his earpiece—the one synced to the wiretap he’d installed in Karen’s room.
Her voice filtered through, mid-conversation:
"I’m ready, my love. Yeah, it’s enough. I know, I know... but I just hope they design the cure soon before things get worse. You’re mutating too, aren’t you? Of course I’m worried about you! What are you talking about? You’re my lover—you’ve been my lover since high school. I only married that random loser as a cover and to get quick cash to drag our family out of this hellhole. Alright, alright... see you in a few."
The line went dead.
Asher stood frozen, a sour grimace settling over his face. Who the hell was this lover his ex-wife was talking about? And she had the nerve to say she only married for money!
’And that loser was me?’ Asher thought bitterly.
He wasn’t even angry anymore. His anger was replaced by a cold resentment. His entire past life had been nothing but a sick joke. If this was the work of the Author, the guy was a massive asshole. How could anyone write such a cliché, humiliating premise?
He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. ’I’m not under his control anymore. My life, my rules. And right now, I want nothing more than to put an end to that bitch. I’ll stop the Shinigami, and I’ll stop my brother Akira. Shipping drugs inside stuffed dolls... it disgusts me to my core.’
A sudden sound snapped him out of his thoughts. The click of a lock, followed by the heavy thud of the apartment door closing. Karen was leaving.
Asher pulled out his earpiece, stepped out into the hallway, and locked his own door behind him.
Down by the main entrance, Karen—hauling a heavy duffel bag clearly stuffed with cash—glanced back. Her eyes landed on the security guard wearing a black hoodie.
’Is he... the one?’ she wondered, scanning him from head to toe. She shook her head. ’No, he can’t be the guy Zero was talking about—the kid in the hoodie who beat him and his crew up in the alley. This one looks like he couldn’t even lift a finger.’
She brushed past him frantically. Out on the main road, she flagged down a taxi, muttered a destination to the driver, and slid into the backseat.
As the cab pulled away, Asher flagged his own ride. He pulled out a thick stack of bills and shoved it straight into the driver’s hands.
"Drive. Follow that cab and don’t lose it, no matter what."
The driver, a middle-aged man, stared down at the cash. It was more money than he made in a month, handed to him by a teenager.
"Say less," the driver muttered, throwing the car into gear and speeding after the cab.
They wove through Tokyo’s traffic until the cityscape dissolved into an industrial district. Up ahead, Karen’s cab pulled up beside a bleak, towering building: a condom factory.
Asher’s driver coasted to a stop a safe distance away. Together, they watched Karen hurry out of her cab and head straight for the entrance. The guards and workers stationed at the doors didn’t even stop her; they simply bowed and ushered her inside.
Asher didn’t waste a second. He unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped out into the smoggy air.
"Thanks, old man," he muttered.
"Old man?" The driver scoffed. "Just so you know, kid, I’m thirty-two! That’s not—" He cut himself off, his eyes widening as he stared out the window. "Huh?"
Asher was gone.
The driver blinked, looking around frantically. The surrounding lot was wide open—there was nowhere to hide, yet the boy had vanished into thin air within a fraction of a second.
Shaking, the driver jammed the shifter into drive. "Did I... did I just give a ride to a ghost?"
Terrified, he slammed on the gas and drove away from the facility.

Meanwhile, Asher activated his invisibility skill and glided silently after his ex-wife.
Inside the factory, he moved with precision, ensuring his footsteps didn’t make a sound. The air was thick with the foul, chemical tang of illicit drugs, poorly disguised beneath the synthetic stench of latex.
And the "factory workers"? Every single one of them had a concealed firearm tucked into their waistband.
"Good day, ma’am," one of the guards greeted Karen with a stiff bow. "Right this way."
He gestured toward a heavy metal door. Another guard unlocked it, swinging the reinforced steel open. The second Karen crossed the threshold, Asher glided in right behind her, slipping through the gap a fraction of a second before the heavy door slammed shut.
Ahead lay a dark, damp corridor with a concrete staircase leading down into the earth. Karen hurried down the steps; Asher shadowed her every move.
At the bottom, the corridor opened into a vast, dimly lit complex—some kind of secret underground hideout. Low-wattage bulbs overhead cast long, eerie shadows across the damp walls.
At the far end of the hall stood a heavy industrial elevator. Karen pressed the button and stepped inside. Just as the doors began to slide shut, Asher jammed his boot into the frame, forcing the sensor to trigger. The doors glided back open.
Karen scowled, tapping her foot impatiently. "What is wrong with this piece of junk?"
She aggressively mashed the close button. The doors sealed, and the elevator shuddered into a deep descent.
When the doors finally parted at the bottom level, it felt as though they had stepped into an entirely different world—a sight that left Asher frozen in disgust and burning with newfound rage.
Spread out before them was...
"Ah, if it isn’t our dear Karen. Welcome back to our little slice of heaven," a smooth, raspy voice called out.
An old man stepped forward—white hair, a neatly trimmed beard, thick glasses, and a pristine white lab coat.
"Can I offer you a cup of coffee?" the doctor offered with a sickening smile. "Or perhaps a one-way ticket to hell?"
Karen snapped, her patience worn thin. "Don’t start with me!"
She unzipped the duffel bag and dumped heavy bricks of cash onto the floor with a dull thud.
"This is all of it. Tell me you’re closer to a breakthrough on the research! I can’t wait much longer!"
The old man chuckled softly, unbothered by her tone. "You really need to learn how to relax, my dear. As you can see, our men are working diligently around the clock. Your son will be good as new very soon."
Hidden from people’s sight, Asher’s heart stopped.
’Son...? She has a... son?’
