Chapter 401: 401. Mutations
Sitting in his monitor room, Asher lazily munched on a packet of potato chips while his eyes drifted across the surveillance screens.
On the feed, three men in dark shades and tailored black suits strode down the hallway toward Loona’s quarters.
They knocked, and Loona opened the door. Through the silent CCTV footage, Asher couldn’t hear their conversation, but the intent was obvious: they were taking her. Exactly as he had anticipated.
Loona clearly found the sketchy men suspicious and refused to go along with them. She opened her mouth to scream, but one of the men pressed a rag over her nose and mouth. Within seconds, her body went limp. They hoisted her unconscious frame and carried her away.
Asher didn’t bother standing up to intervene. He simply watched them haul her out to their vehicle and drive off, his steady crunching uninterrupted.
Today was a crucial Saturday at Sad Mart—payroll day. Which meant his money-hungry ex-wife, Karen, would be receiving her check. Asher needed to see precisely what she was planning to do with those funds.
Loona’s safety mattered, of course. But her capture was a necessary evil—a strategic sacrifice to unearth whatever secrets were lurking in the shadows.
He snatched the Labubu doll off his desk, exited his hidden control room, and stashed the toy into a small duffel bag. Stripping off his work clothes, he changed into plain black trousers and pulled a dark hoodie low over his face. Once dressed, he closed his eyes, the glowing blue lights of his system interface floating against the back of his eyelids.
With a cold smirk, he activated a skill. A swirl of thick, dark mist began to coalesce a few feet in front of him.
His smile widened. ’Works like a charm.’

A few hours later...
As the day bled into evening, Loona stirred. She opened her eyes groggily, instantly hit by a blinding, throbbing headache. Her throat felt like sandpaper, her lips were cracked, and a deep ache in her stomach reminded her that she hadn’t eaten since morning.
The day had started with having sex with Asher, followed by a bath. But right as she was cooking and getting ready to eat, those men in black had broken in and then everything went black.
Panic spiked her pulse as she tried to move, only to find her limbs completely immobilized.
She took in her surroundings through blurry eyes. She was in a cold, unfamiliar space—a dimly lit room containing nothing but a single table, a chair, and a flickering bulb dangling overhead.
Ropes bound her tightly to the wooden chair. When she tried to squirm, the rough fibers bit painfully into her skin.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. ’Have I been kidnapped?’
In the grip of blind terror, her mind instinctively reached for the one person who gave her a sense of security.
"Asher!" she cried out into the gloom, her voice raspy. "Asher!! Help me!!"
Instead of a comforting reply, heavy, echoing footsteps approached. The heavy door groaned open, revealing a man wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet. He let out a low, raspy chuckle.
"Wow... what a bitch," the man rasped, his voice dripping with venom. "Calling out for your lover when you’re in trouble? The boss is going to skin you alive."
Loona swallowed hard, but the ropes wrapped tightly around her upper chest made breathing and swallowing nearly impossible.
"Who... who are you?!" She tried to force authority into her trembling voice; it was the only weapon she had left. "Let me go right now! Do you have any idea who I am? My husband is dangerous. You don’t want to—"
"Oh, let’s drop the act, shall we?" the masked man sneered. "The husband you’re talking about is the one who ordered us to grab you. After all, you’ve been sleeping around behind his back, haven’t you, you little slut?"
He raised his hand and delivered a crack across her face. The blow stung sharply, but the realization behind his words burned far worse.
’The boss...? Did Josh find out about the affair? How?!’
Her heart thundered like a war drum. This was her absolute worst nightmare brought to life. Josh finding out meant a death sentence—not just for her, but for Asher, too. And Josh wouldn’t stop there. He’d hunt down her father next. This time, he wouldn’t just settle for severing fingers or toes; he’d take his head.
Every trace of hope shattered within her. ’It’s over.’
The masked man clicked his tongue, watching her posture collapse. "So you really did cheat on him. I always thought you were just a meek little submissive pet he kept around while playing the normal corporate family man at Sad Mart. When he told me you were screwing the security guard, I didn’t believe it. But look at you... nothing but a shameless whore."
Another slap cracked across her cheek, harder this time. Blood rushed to her skin as hot tears spilled over her lashes. She couldn’t even form a lie to defend herself. She had betrayed a monster, and these were the consequences.
Slap! Slap!
Her head whipped back and forth under the barrage.
Unnoticed in the corner of the dark room, wisps of black smoke began to materialize. As the violence escalated, the smoke grew thicker, swirling and expanding in the shadows. But just as the shadowy mist threatened to spill over into the light, the masked man stopped hitting her.
The moment he paused, the dark fog slowly receded, dissipating back into the gloom.
"You’re lucky, bitch," the man spat, wiping his knuckles. "For what you did, you deserve a bullet between the eyes. But you’ve been spared a quick death. The boss needed to deliver human test subjects today, so instead of rotting in a ditch, you’re going to the lab. Our science team needs to test the side effects of the new P-series serum."
He leaned in close, his visor reflecting her terrified face. "It’s an unrefined batch. High chance you’ll mutate into some grotesque, hideous thing. You won’t even be recognizable. You’re going to die an ugly monster."
Despair choked the air right out of her lungs. She didn’t understand what he meant by "P-series" or "mutations," but she understood the core truth: her life was over.
Yet, beneath the terror, a single memory flared in her mind like a dying ember.
’I’ll always protect you.’
Asher’s promise echoed in her head. She gulped, praying with every fiber of her being that he meant those words.
Suddenly, a muffled shout echoed from the corridor outside.
"Senate! The Boss is here!!"
A moment later, a chillingly familiar voice roared from the hallway, dripping with unbridled rage.
"Where is that ungrateful bitch?!"
Loona’s heart stopped. Josh had arrived.
