Chapter 389: 389. The universe loves drama
After listening in on Karen’s frantic call, I spent the rest of the night glued to the monitors, specifically tracking Josh. He was running unusually late, and I wanted to see exactly what kind of state he was in when he pulled up.
But I never saw him come through the front door.
It was only around 11:00 PM that the bathroom camera suddenly blinked to life, showing Josh casually standing over the toilet taking a leak.
From there, he walked straight into the bedroom, where Loona was already fast asleep.
I blinked a few times, rubbing my eyes in sheer confusion. ’Where the hell did he just come from?’
I had kept my eyes locked on the primary hallway camera and the feed pointing directly at his front door. He hadn’t walked past them. I checked the apartment passages again, rewinding the footage frame by frame to see if I had missed a blind spot or a glitch in the feed. Nothing. There was absolutely nothing. He hadn’t entered the building through any conventional means, yet he was suddenly inside his apartment.
A cold bead of sweat formed on my forehead. ’Don’t tell me... are these crazy P-Series serums capable of granting space-time distortion? Teleportation for example?’
The moment the thought crossed my mind, I forced myself to shut it down. No matter how advanced their underground labs were, breaking the laws of physics and teleporting wasn’t something achievable on Earth. Injecting a chemical to rapidly mutate muscle mass and density was one thing, but bending reality was a whole different ballpark.
There had to be another explanation. A hidden asset, a secret passage, or a blind spot I hadn’t mapped out yet. My logical questions demanded logical answers, and I was going to unearth them tomorrow.

I woke up early at 4:00 AM, determined to see if the morning shift brought any more anomalies. Sure enough, while the sky was still a pitch-black curtain waiting for dawn, Josh’s apartment door opened. He stepped out into the hall carrying a heavy, unmarked black duffel bag.
Because the exterior courtyard didn’t have any hidden cameras, I had to physically slide over to my window, peeling the curtain back just enough to peek outside.
Down in the shadows of the yard, I watched Josh hand the heavy bag off to a shadowy, obscured figure. I couldn’t make out the recipient’s face or tell what was stuffed inside the duffel, but the moment the exchange was complete, Josh slipped back into the complex as if nothing had happened.
Not long after, the morning routine kicked in. Loona dutifully prepared his bathwater and started cracking eggs for breakfast. The arrogant bastard even delivered a hard, proprietary slap to her ass while she was standing at the stove.
But I noticed the subtle shift in her immediately, Loona was distant. Her movements were cold and entirely lacking the submissive warmth she used to give him. Her loyalty didn’t belong to him anymore.
It belonged exclusively to me.
As the sun finally cleared the horizon, the corporate workers began filing out of the complex to head to the Sad Mat offices.
The universe apparently loved drama, because Karen and Josh crossed paths right in the center of the main hallway. Karen hit him with a glare so violently cold it could have frozen molten lava on impact. Josh, completely unfazed, simply flashed a smug, knowing smirk and sauntered past her with his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The raw tension between the two was palpable.
However, Josh’s punchable smirk instantly vanished when Secretary Kim walked into the corridor. She glided past them, her hips swaying almost hypnotically in her tailored pencil skirt. As she passed Josh, she let out a dismissive scoff, rolled her eyes completely to the back of her head, offered a polite nod to Karen, and kept walking.
These three were actively at each other’s throats. Why? I couldn’t be entirely sure yet. Maybe it was standard corporate politics, or maybe they were all aggressively sabotaging one another to climb to the absolute top of the Sad Mat food chain. I could only make educated guesses for now.
Sticking to my usual routine, I compiled a secure copy of last night’s surveillance logs on Karen and made my way over to the Sad Mat corporate headquarters to deliver it to my brother, Akira.
Stepping into his executive office, I slipped flawlessly into my role of behaving like a simple-minded, compliant, ordinary security guard.
Looking at me, he wouldn’t have the slightest inkling that I was actively pulling back the curtain on every single dark secret he, his company, and his high-ranking employees were desperate to hide.
"Last night’s footage, boss," I said, keeping my voice neutral as I slid the flash drive across his pristine mahogany desk.
Akira picked it up, inspecting it briefly. "Good job."
He reached into his desk drawer, retrieved a thick envelope, and extended it toward me. "Your compensation for the week. Keep up the exceptional work."
But as I reached out to take the envelope, his grip tightened on the paper. He didn’t let go. Instead, he leaned forward, his sharp eyes narrowing into slits. "Did you... happen to notice anything unusual last night?"
I kept my expression entirely blank. "Elaborate, sir. Unusual in what way?"
Akira cleared his throat, adjusting his collar slightly. "In Josh’s unit, for example. You didn’t catch anything... unnatural on his feed?"
’Interesting. So the big boss was actively suspicious of his own enforcer, too.’
"No, sir. Everything seemed completely ordinary on my end," I lied smoothly.
Akira nodded slowly, finally releasing his grip on my pay envelope. He settled back into his leather chair, looking me straight in the eye. "And the specific bathroom footages I requested two days ago?"
Ah, right. The boss had explicitly ordered me to hand over the unedited, hidden bathroom feeds of the female tenants bathing. All of them.
Reaching into my trousers pocket, I pulled out a separate, encrypted drive and placed it firmly on the desk.
Akira accepted it, a small, dark smirk playing at the corner of his lips. I gave him a fleeting, subtle look that screamed, ’I know exactly what kind of degenerate you are.’
But as a fellow man of culture, I knew better than to overstay my welcome. A man desperate for his solitary voyeurism needed his privacy.
Exiting the corporate building, I made a straight line back to the apartment complex with one burning priority dominating my mind: discovering exactly how the fuck Josh had bypassed my security grid last night.
Reaching his door, I didn’t even bother with the courtesy of knocking. I simply turned the handle, opened Loona’s door, and stepped right inside.
But in my hyper-fixation on the mystery... I completely forgot of the eyes watching my move from behind me.
To be continued...
