Chapter 388: 388. A promise to my stomach
I immediately let go and leaped backward off Zero’s shoulders. Who knew what this volatile serum was doing to his biology? For all I knew, the old bastard was about to self-destruct into a localized human explosion.
The moment I landed on the ground, the enforcers seized the opportunity and unleashed a fresh hail of bullets. Because of my shattered ribs and the lingering trauma in my chest, I wasn’t nearly as nimble as before. Instead of trying to out-weave and dodge the bullets, I simply manifested my Wind Barrier once more.
The bullets slammed violently into the localized gale, losing all kinetic energy before dropping effortlessly to the ground. I was so proud that my barrier was impenetrable to a point where bullets felt like feathers hitting it’s surface.
I maintained my distance, watching from a safe vantage point as Zero fell to his knees, wriggling and thrashing on the floor in absolute agony.
His remaining lackeys looked completely terrified—partly because their firearms weren’t even fazing me, and partly because their invincible commander was actively mutating into a dying, convulsing beast on the pavement.
"The antidote!!" one of the enforcers roared frantically to his comrade. "The commander needs the stabilizer antidote right now!!"
"It’s in the car!!" the other yelled back in a panic.
We all glanced over at the black sedan, and it was a complete write-off. The entire frame was caved in and twisted from Zero’s earlier rampage. I seriously doubted the doors could even be pried open, let alone access the glove compartment where the medical kit was likely stored.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the third enforcer typing frantically on his phone. Realization clicked. If he wasn’t begging upper management for immediate backup, he was desperately requesting an emergency medical extraction for their dying commander from other high-ranking Shinigami members.
As much as the system-user in me wanted to stick around, gather intelligence, and watch the spectacular aftermath of a P-Series overdose or whatever the heck they call their serums, I was severely running out of time for my primary objective.
The Sad Mat tenants were approaching the end of their shifts. If I didn’t get back to my guard station right now, I’d miss the window to establish my nightly surveillance and stalk my cheating ex-wife, Karen.
"Sorry, boys," I said, offering them a casual wave. "My time here is up. Catch you on the flip side."
With that, I turned my back on them. Reaching into my system inventory, I pulled out a fresh, glowing health vial and downed the liquid in one swift gulp, instantly feeling the warm, soothing magic knit my shattered ribs back together.
I tossed the empty glass aside and shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my black hoodie, walking off nonchalantly.
The desperate enforcers tried shooting at me again, refusing to let me walk away so easily. But my passive barrier remained firmly active, swallowing the incoming rounds of their bullets until the hollow clicks of empty magazines echoed through the alley.
They had completely run out of bullets.
"What the hell is he...?"
"The kid is basically unshootable!"
"I feel like... I’m trapped in a fucking nightmare right now."
I completely ignored their bewildered muttering, pulled my black hood lower over my eyes, and walked out into the main street, blending seamlessly back into the crowded Tokyo afternoon.
And as I had promised my stomach, I took a detour to a local convenience store to stock up on some meals and snacks for tonight’s stakeout.
With two plastic bags packed to the brim with food, I walked back into my quarters, locked the door behind me, and let out a breath.
Grabbing a spoon and a large tub of Greek yogurt I’d just bought, I walked straight into the hidden surveillance room, kicked my feet up on the desk, and sat comfortably as I began to eat.
Right on schedule, the tenants began returning home from the Sad Mat offices one after the other. The first to enter the complex was the husband of the woman who had been eavesdropping on Loona and me earlier.
The moment his face appeared on the monitor, I found myself swallowing a tight lump of saliva. After the horrors I had just witnessed in that dark alleyway, my trust in these syndicate families was officially at zero. If that woman opened her mouth and confessed what she heard to her husband, he would almost certainly run straight to his coworker, Josh. And if Josh found out I was fucking his wife, he would hurt Loona, something I absolutely wouldn’t tolerate.
An explosive revelation like that would blow this place into an all-out bloodbath, which would be terrible for business. I still needed to keep this caretaker gig; I still needed unfettered access to these feeds to dissect my cheating ex-wife, Karen, and expose whatever dark, P-Series secrets my brother Akira was sweeping under the rug.
To my immense relief, the woman didn’t seem to mention a single thing. If anything, she looked thrilled the moment her husband crossed the threshold. She pulled him into a passionate kiss, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck.
They must have been head-over-heels for each other because the second the front door clicked shut, her hands were already pulling at his necktie. She swiftly stripped him of his suit jacket, unbuttoned his white shirt, and led him straight toward the bedroom.
They had sex that lasted all of five minutes before she hopped out of bed, threw on a robe, and headed to the kitchen to serve him dinner.
Leaving them to their domestic bliss, I shifted my attention to another section of the monitor matrix. Secretary Kim had just unlocked her apartment door, falling right into her predictable evening routine: bathing, cooking a quiet meal, and winding down. Nothing actionable there.
Then, the camera over the adjacent unit flashed as my ex-wife, Karen, unlocked her door and stepped inside.
She looked absolutely miserable. The moment she was behind closed doors, she ran her manicured hands frantically through her dark hair, tossing it into a stressed, messy bird’s nest.
Unlike the other tenants, she didn’t even bother removing her corporate attire or running a bath to wash off the workday. She simply kicked off her designer stilettos and threw herself face-down onto the mattress.
’Why the hell does she look so stressed? What’s eating at her?’ I couldn’t help but wonder.
By all accounts, Karen should have been on top of the world. She held the most powerful female position at the firm, her private safe was practically overflowing with illicit cash, and she had a rotating roster of wealthy, married clients lining up to fuck her and hand her massive checks. What more could a greedy woman possibly ask for?
As I kept my eyes locked onto her camera feed, I saw her abruptly roll over, whip out her smartphone, and begin aggressively tapping away at the glass. The hidden camera angle didn’t let me read the text on her screen, but her frantic thumb movements screamed desperation.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated, lighting up with an incoming call. She answered it on the very first ring, pressing the device to her ear.
"Any luck today?" she demanded.
I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end since the volume wasn’t high enough for my hidden microphones to pick up the digital feedback.
But Karen’s response was a harsh whispered yell. "You know those psychos have me on a fucking leash, and you still have the nerve to be this reckless!? Do you want me to rot in a cell the second they catch on to us!?"
She went quiet for a moment, gripping the phone tightly as she listened to the caller’s explanation. Slowly, her brow furrowed into a tight, suspicious line.
"A boy?" she repeated, her voice laced with sudden unease. "In a black hoodie?"
I leaned forward in my chair, my spoon freezing halfway to my mouth as my eyes narrowed at the monitor. That description sounded dangerously, text-book identical to me.
"Got it," Karen assured the voice, her expression hardening into something cold. "I’ll look into it immediately."
She cut the call, staring blankly at the wall as a dark silence filled her room.
