Chapter 14: Terms of Us

"Take your left hand out of your pocket," Ryan said after the staff celebration ended, watching Mika continue to collect glasses with her right, "the account can wait until I know what the last lightning arc cost you."

Mika set the next glass beside the sink before answering. Her public smile had disappeared with the reporters, leaving the room quieter than the settlement deserved.

"Your output degraded after the lightning display," Ryan said, placing the condition alert beside her output sheet, "the budget ended before that last arc against the freelancer."

"You took an E-rank tool through the shoulder last week and called it educational," Mika replied, checking the brace beneath his sleeve, "do not turn concern into a one-way policy."

The counterattack landed because his wrist remained braced beneath the sleeve.

Ryan stopped reaching for the clean argument, then left the alert open on the table.

’She had found the inconsistency before I did,’ he thought, watching her thumb press the jacket seam, ’which was becoming an expensive relationship feature.’

"I price my risks before taking them," he said, sliding the output sheet toward her.

"You price yourself cheaper than everyone else," she said, lifting the alert with two fingers, "which makes the math dishonest."

Her public smile disappeared completely once the reporters left.

Anger remained shaped by a guild that priced visible weakness while Ryan still trusted defined terms more than people.

Neither problem belonged to the regulator or the night’s financial recovery.

Stabilising her pathway would not stop the hiding, while exposing his dishonest risk model would not create trust.

"When my decline became public, sponsors stopped answering before the clinic finished its first scan," she said, flexing the hidden hand inside her pocket.

"My guild kept the medical file," she went on, her voice going flat, "then moved my replacement into my apartment before I finished treatment."

She turned the glass a slow half circle without ever drinking from it.

"After that they put out a statement praising my service," she said, "so looking fine became the only asset nobody could transfer without asking me."

Ryan sat across from her while the club staff pretended to count bottles.

"Terms are how I know where the exit is," he said, keeping his hands on the table, "if everything has a clause, nobody gets to pretend leaving was outside the model."

’He was trying to make safety sound like paperwork,’ Ryan thought, watching her face, ’because paperwork had never asked him to trust it.’

Mika removed her hand after seeing him leave the alert untouched.

A tremor moved through the fingers, weaker than the cascade yet too steady for either of them to excuse.

The tremor stayed visible across the table.

"I noticed it before the toast," she said, placing the hand between them, "I thought I could finish one hour without turning the settlement into another medical emergency."

"You could have told me and finished the hour," Ryan said, then looked at the brace beneath his sleeve.

"I know that now," she replied, tracing the output line with one nail, "knowing it while everyone watched me win was harder."

Ryan offered the reassessment without opening the private view where she could notice his attention change.

"I can recalibrate the pathway through the regulator," he said, keeping his voice level, "nothing about the club, our partnership, or the settlement changes if you refuse, and I will not turn this condition into authority over your answer."

Mika studied him over the edge of the output sheet for several careful seconds. "You keep describing that device like you already know what it will do," she said, "who taught you to read it?"

"I can’t tell you," Ryan replied, meeting her eyes.

The refusal hurt her expression more than the first answer had, because it sounded practiced.

Mika set the sheet down without looking away from his face.

"Did you practice that sentence?" she asked, touching the alert with her knuckle.

"I corrected it twice," Ryan admitted, watching the private view remain closed.

She considered the answer, then leaned back against the bar.

"Then this executive meeting has one medical agenda item," she said, "after that, we discuss why you keep looking at my mouth during negotiations."

"Meeting request denied," Ryan said, keeping the alert between them, "you are avoiding the consent question."

Mika looked down at her shaking hand before returning her attention to him. "Yes, Ryan, reassess the pathway," she replied.

He left the prompt untouched while she considered the offer.

Silence remained an answer until she replaced it with consent.

’She was choosing the risk with her eyes open,’ Ryan thought, waiting beside the table, ’which meant I no longer got to choose it for her.’

The regulator sat inside the treatment room where their first procedure had burned the emergency power bridge.

This time staff remained asleep upstairs, the lights held, plus neither of them had strangers waiting to repossess the equipment.

Mika guided his hand beneath her collarbone and routed the first pulse. Ryan adjusted against new resistance while she controlled their familiar count.

The tremor faded after the fourth controlled cycle through the damaged pathway.

Her output ceiling remained unchanged, yet the repaired pathway returned to its post-investment baseline without another routing error striking Ryan.

’The repair had worked without rewarding either of us for hiding the problem,’ he thought, watching her fingers settle, ’that was a result he could trust.’

Mika tested her hand, then closed the regulator before he could turn relief into analysis.

"Medical agenda finished," she said, stepping between his knees, "the rest requires a simpler answer, your private arrangement stays outside it, any return belongs somewhere else, and concern does not get to hide the question, do you want me?"

"I want you," Ryan said, leaving no clause between them.

"I want you too," she replied, taking the front of his shirt, "I am done pretending the sound-booth kiss solved anything, and I refuse to schedule what happens next as an executive meeting."

She kissed him without the camera smile, opening his collar while Ryan asked once whether she remained certain.

Ryan counted the pauses between her questions as carefully as the output cycles, because a relationship could survive an awkward answer more easily than it could survive another decision made by one person in a locked room.

Her unambiguous yes removed the last excuse he had been using as caution.

He stopped creating distance she had not requested from him.

They reached the apartment without scheduling another conversation that night.

Mika led until performance gave way to nerves, while Ryan met the woman beneath the public image without asking her to become less dangerous.

Her jacket reached the chair while his brace protected the fracture. Each pause received an answer, with Mika asking plainly whenever she wanted more.

’He could follow a direct answer,’ Ryan thought, listening to her change the pace, ’the difficult part had been allowing one to exist.’

Caution had lost its argument for once.

Ryan followed her answers, then stopped when the shoulder tightened. Mika pulled him closer after the first pause, keeping concern from controlling the moment.

Later, Mika rested against him while the city continued discussing their finances without either principal present.

"This is not payment for the regulator," she said, tracing the edge of his wrist brace, "it does not buy the club, our partnership, or whatever comes after it."

"Understood," Ryan said.

"I don’t think you do," she said, leaving her hand where it was, "so if either of us starts confusing help with ownership, we say it out loud."

She waited until he stopped scanning the room for exits and looked at her properly.

"I need to know you can want me without owning me," she said, steady about it, "while you need to know I can take help without calling it a debt."

"And the money doesn’t get a vote," Ryan said.

"The money doesn’t get a vote," she agreed, satisfied.

"We name it before silence gets the chance," Ryan agreed, turning toward her.

"I also refuse to perform wellness at you again," Mika continued, placing her steady hand over his brace, "if the hand shakes, you see it before the internet does."

"Then I stop pricing solo risks without showing you the model," Ryan replied, accepting the rule before he calculated its cost.

"That term is going to be expensive for you," she warned, tracing one line on the napkin beside the bed.

"The useful ones usually are," he said, turning the napkin toward her, "especially when both people can enforce them, and neither person gets to call silence an acceptable disclosure."

Staff messages brought morning while Mika slept past her first alarm in a month. The interface waited for the room to become ordinary before settling.

Morning arrived with poor timing again.

[Relationship Milestone Recognized]

[Investment Ownership Claim: Invalid]

[Mutual Bond Qualification: Verified]

The rejected ownership line held longer than the others on the display.

The boundary had become part of the private rules instead of decorative language.

[Bond Dividend Acquired: Spark Sync: Stage One]

[Function: Shared Reaction Timing at Close Range]

[Portfolio Status: Compounding]

Ryan felt her reach before she moved toward the phone. He found it at the same moment, stopping with both sets of fingers against the screen.

"Either we became disturbingly coordinated overnight," she said, opening one eye, "or your private arrangement attended a meeting without permission."

"Both possibilities require testing after coffee," Ryan said, drawing the phone closer.

The display compared her relaunch lightning with old B-rank footage beneath a recovery headline.

Her former guild had replied with watching eyes beneath the recovery headline.

’They had missed every private decision,’ Ryan thought, reading the reply, ’then arrived for the photograph.’

Mika read the message once, then set the phone down without hiding her steady hand.

"Let them watch," she said, placing the phone facedown beside their joined hands, "they missed the part that mattered, and I am finished correcting people who only recognise recovery after a camera confirms it."
