Chapter 13: Cross Default

The lender arrived to seize a club whose defaults no longer existed.

Ryan had one chance to turn its paperwork against the company before litigation consumed their relaunch money.

He layered cured defaults above the predatory structure while Mika invited reporters under a renovation briefing.

The lender’s vulnerable facility stayed sealed beneath both preparations while the reporters took their places.

"You are letting them enter," she said from the bar, positioning three phones toward the front doors, "but how far?"

"Until the officer repeats the legal basis on camera," Ryan replied, checking the empty chair beside the notary’s table, "then he directs someone toward an asset, commitment first, reversal afterward."

"The last man who entered on those terms left pinned to my furniture," Mika said, touching the new bar with one finger.

"Repairing the bar is included in our settlement demand," Ryan told her, sliding the demand beneath the camera feed.

’She was describing a warning as a memory,’ Ryan thought, watching the freelancers gather outside, ’which meant the warning had already worked once.’

Before the doors opened, Ryan gave every employee one instruction card. Nobody received a speech to memorize because the cards contained everything required.

They only needed to record who entered, what the officer ordered, plus which asset each freelancer touched.

Mika placed the strongest phones where the lender could see them.

She hid two more among ordinary customers, because a well-behaved officer would leave signatures while a performer would create evidence.

The notary received an empty chair positioned beyond the likely path of violence. Ryan checked that choice twice before accepting the risk of a crowded room.

Three D-rank freelancers entered beside the lender officer with matching gray armbands.

A legal observer followed, plus a notary who introduced himself by saying he had read the previous incident report.

"I am present to document condition plus transfer," the notary said, checking the exits before opening his log, "I am not authorized to restrain anyone, interpret threats, or remain during preventable violence, and I have defined preventable broadly."

"Your client hired three reasons for violence," Mika said, angling her phone toward the freelancers.

"I have documented all three," the notary replied, writing the first time beside his name.

The officer read the acceleration notice aloud for every phone in the room. He instructed his team to secure the regulator, sound controls, plus liquor-license records.

One freelancer touched the medical screen beside the regulator’s warning label.

Ryan stood between the other two with his collapsed spear visible at his hip, allowing the order to finish before he opened the first folder.

’He wanted the room to react before the paper did,’ Ryan thought, watching the officer perform for the cameras, ’that made the timing useful.’

"Your acceleration relies on three defaults," Ryan said, giving the officer certified copies, "combat income was cured through the auction contract, occupancy through the relaunch, while safe operation was witnessed by your representative and recorded on the device still inside his pocket."

The officer ignored the documents while keeping his attention on the cameras.

He ordered work to continue, so Ryan opened the injury-rate increase, medical-equipment bundling, plus the income clause triggered by lost combat capacity.

The cameras kept recording every hand.

"Proceeding after written notice converts every seizure action into evidence for a predatory-structuring complaint," Ryan said, handing copies to the notary, "please record that the officer received them before directing further contact, including the freelancer whose hand remains on certified medical equipment."

The notary recorded the repeated instruction, the contact point, plus the exact time with visible care.

Two freelancers left the equipment after the notary repeated the timestamp.

The third kept his hand on the screen, waiting for whoever paid him to decide whether pride counted as a task.

Lowering his voice, the officer asked Ryan, "what do you want?"

"Release the liens, restore the original rate, refund every dollar the injury increase produced," Ryan said, keeping the terms inside the cameras’ range, "then extinguish the seizure rights your defective clauses created."

The officer kept his attention on the cameras rather than the paper, so Ryan carried on.

"You can call the settlement ordinary risk management," he said, sliding a copy toward the notary, "though if your freelancers touch another asset after notice, he records a decision your creditor will eventually read."

"That is not a settlement," the officer said, keeping his voice beneath the nearby cameras.

"You have not seen the settlement pressure yet," Ryan replied, placing one finger on the sealed facility schedule.

He gave the officer the only sealed copy after confirming the cameras could see it.

The facility schedule placed Mika’s loan inside the borrowing base beside provisions governing defective pledged debt.

’A nightlife loan had entered a banking facility,’ Ryan thought, watching the officer stop at the marked page, ’the room had finally become somebody else’s problem.’

The officer tried reading only the marked provisions before returning to the first page.

The facility amount placed the club’s debt in perspective beside the lender’s larger obligations.

Challenging Ryan’s evidence meant inviting a creditor hundreds of times larger to audit every similar loan in the portfolio, which could freeze a facility network whose paperwork reached far beyond this club before the original acceleration received review.

The facility total ended the performance before the officer reached his next instruction.

A formal complaint could freeze lending across a portfolio worth far more than the club.

Three armed freelancers had entered behind the officer, yet Ryan watched him realise that the most dangerous weapon in the room was the page inside his hands.

"You intend to cross-default a facility over one nightlife loan," the officer said, keeping the folder below the cameras, "your complaint could freeze lending across the whole portfolio."

"Your company put this loan inside that facility," Ryan replied, letting the officer keep the schedule below the cameras, "I only read the terms, followed the collateral reference, and noticed your employer cannot afford the review it invited by accelerating after cure."

The officer held his gaze across the folder. "Who gave you access to this?" he asked, tapping the schedule.

"I can’t tell you," Ryan said, keeping his voice flat while Mika looked at him from the bar.

The refusal made the officer impatient while leaving the lender with the more reasonable theory, that somebody larger had placed Ryan in front of the club.

The third freelancer pulled aside the medical screen with one gloved hand.

Mika crossed without Lightning Step, then placed one shaped arc beside his feet before he touched the regulator.

"Whoever is paying you is reconsidering the job," she said while pink current held across her fingers, "give him time."

All three freelancers waited for instructions that never arrived beside the silent regulator.

The third restored the screen after repricing his day rate against Mika’s controlled lightning.

One freelancer’s team channel surfaced through a screenshot before settlement talks finished. It recorded the moment their easy assignment changed categories for the group.

{client withheld active B-rank capability}

Mika’s phone received the next line while the notary signed a timestamp.

{job says damaged B, the lightning stopped exactly at the tape}

The notary’s pen continued across the page while the freelancers read the room.

{damaged is not the same as harmless}

The recommendation arrived on another phone while the officer remained busy performing confidence for the cameras.

He still had not checked his own messages despite the warnings crossing the room.

{recommend withdrawal unless client authorizes hazard premium in writing}

It reached every phone except the officer’s, then forced the freelancers to reconsider.

He returned the folder, then requested privacy before Ryan allowed only enough distance for counsel to answer on camera.

Mika let silent freelancers answer reporters while settlement talks moved into the sound booth.

The agreement returned the original rate, refunded excess interest, released liens, plus extinguished seizure rights.

Northstar remained indebted after the settlement, though the contract could no longer turn Mika’s injury into automatic ownership.

The lender exited beneath cameras with empty seizure folders.

For once, the bottle stayed unopened.

Ryan’s restructuring share reached his account before the settlement signatures finished drying.

Five figures replaced the seventeen-cent balance, causing his banking app to lock the account for suspicious activity before displaying its celebration animation.

"It thinks financial recovery is fraud," Mika said, reading the alert, "your bank finally understands our business model, though locking the account before launching confetti suggests unresolved feelings."

’The bank had waited for a profitable night,’ Ryan thought, watching the account lock, ’then decided the result looked criminal.’

The interface settled its returns after the lender’s wire cleared through plausible records.

[Investment Milestone Verified: Debt Restructured]

[Cash Return Issued: Documented]

[Original Investment ROI: Recalculating]

The percentage resolved high enough for Ryan to close the screen before Mika noticed his expression.

[Automatic Financial Reinvestment Available]

He rejected the prompt while staff opened a hidden bottle. The lender’s team crossed a crowd that had watched its muscle arrive before signed releases left.

Mika raised a glass with her right hand while her left stayed inside her jacket pocket, a choice Ryan noticed because everybody else watched the celebration.

She caught him looking, then used her public smile before speaking to the phone.

"The account unlocked yet?" she asked, lifting the glass toward his phone.

"No," Ryan said, keeping his attention on the pocket, "show me your hand."

"We can audit me after staff stop pretending they cannot hear us," Mika replied, holding the smile for one more camera.

The answer sounded reasonable until the private interface opened across her silhouette, replacing celebration figures with a condition warning.

[Target Condition Alert: Output Degradation Detected]

[Recommended Action: Immediate Reassessment]

[Target Consent: Required]

Ryan left the alert private while Mika refilled glasses one-handed.

The lender’s releases waited inside the sound booth beside the empty settlement folder.
