Chapter 216: B - Shocking confession (2)

Her calm words make my blood run cold. Every muscle in my body goes rigid. My breath catches in my throat, and a shiver runs through me from head to toe.

I hesitate for a moment, then force myself to stay calm.

"Kimberly... aren’t you a little too old to believe stuff like that? Everyone knows vampires aren’t real..."

But the look she gives me is dead serious. Trying to convince her otherwise would be completely pointless.

A heavy silence drags on for what feels like an eternity before I finally speak again.

"How do you know...?" I ask quietly, unable to meet her eyes.

"I know because I saw you, Axel. Twice. The first time, you had already killed someone. But luckily, the second time I managed to stop you before it was too late..."

Wait... so it was her...?

"T-That Monster Slayer...? I-Is that you, Kimberly...?"

She simply nods.

I can’t believe it.

Kimberly... is a Monster Slayer?

It sounds completely insane, and yet... damn it, now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense. How the hell did I not figure it out sooner?

A thousand little details that seemed meaningless on their own suddenly fall perfectly into place.

At first, Kimberly barely even acknowledged me. She only started opening up after the first attack, when she saw me with Joe, Frank Pyton’s lackey everyone calls Green.

She’d clearly seen my face that night... that’s why the wall she’d built around herself suddenly came down.

And then... Frank said his right-hand man, the dark tiefling Philip Serghel — Black — had wounded that Monster Slayer in the right leg.

The following week, Kimberly stayed home with an injury to her leg.

She said she’d cut herself on a sharp branch during a hike, yet Elenoire mentioned it was a burn while she was fitting her dress.

And then there was the night she attacked me in Long Island City...

Yeah... it all fits.

Now I finally understand how she managed to be in the right place at the right time. Kimberly must’ve noticed those two thugs were following us too and figured out what I was about to do.

She probably got off the bus as soon as she saw me walk away and followed me to stop me from slaughtering them.

More importantly, now I understand why she only fought me with her bare hands instead of killing me. From what she just said, it’s obvious she’d grown at least a little attached to me.

...Man, I was such a complete idiot. How the hell did I miss all those signs?

And yet, even after admitting she’s a Monster Slayer, she still looks so calm. So unfazed. Like she just told me something completely ordinary.

"So... what happens now?" I ask, doing my best to sound confident, even though it isn’t easy.

I’m face to face with someone who’s already proven she could kill me without breaking a sweat.

All I can do is hope she doesn’t say something like, Now I’m going to kill you.

Luckily for me, she does nothing of the sort.

"I don’t know. You tell me what I should do. You’re a vampire, and I’m a Monster Slayer. By nature, one of us is supposed to kill the other. After everything you’ve done, killing you would probably be the right thing to do. But I didn’t come to New York because of you, so I could look the other way... if you promise you’ll stop hunting criminals."

"Instead of thanking me for getting rid of all the scum in this city, you’re telling me to stop? You Monster Slayers really are something else. Instead of going after creatures from other worlds who are actually trying to make your society a better place, maybe you should start worrying about what humans are doing instead!"

"Dealing with human criminals isn’t HESPARC’s job. And it isn’t yours either. That’s what the police are for. If everyone took justice into their own hands, the world would fall into anarchy. Anyway, my parents should be home soon. They aren’t Monster Slayers, but they both work for HESPARC. So it’d be better if they didn’t find you here. You see, my mom can recognize a vampire just by their scent. It’s a family gift."

"Yeah... I’d better get out of here as soon as possible," I mutter, taking a few steps toward the bedroom door.

But just as I’m about to walk into the hallway, I turn back, a question suddenly crossing my mind.

"Why did you tell me you’re a Monster Slayer?" I ask, genuinely confused. "None of this makes any sense. Someone with a job like yours should keep their identity secret no matter what."

She gives me an amused smile.

"Axel... why do you think I didn’t kill you? I had plenty of chances. Even now, I could do it without any trouble. And yet you’re still alive."

"Didn’t anyone ever teach you it’s rude to answer a question with another question?"

"The answer to your question is the same as the answer to mine," she says with a teasing grin. "It’s simple. Even if you’re a vampire... I really like you."

"I... you like me?" I stammer, completely stunned, doing my best to keep my emotions in check.

"Don’t get the wrong idea," she giggles. "I like you as a person, not in a romantic way, dummy. The way you’ve always treated me—especially after what happened at the fashion show—made me realize you’re not just some ruthless, bloodthirsty predator. There’s a heart in your chest that’s capable of compassion and selflessness, more than a lot of humans I’ve met. I just think you’re a good guy deep down. And if I killed you... I’d probably miss you. So be good, and don’t make me do it."

She smiles brightly, the warmth of it clashing with the quiet threat behind her words.

"Anyway, I’ll see you at school tomorrow, Axel. And remember... even if you can’t see me, I’m always keeping an eye on you."
