Chapter 215: B - Shocking confession (1)
Just like I expected, Kimberly didn’t show up at school this morning. And honestly, who could blame her?
The only thing people are talking about in class is that old bastard priest’s speech and how he broke down after everyone turned on him, crying in front of the whole world.
Only Naomi — by far the smartest and most compassionate out of all of them — doesn’t say a single word about it.
Either way, I can’t let Kimberly deal with all this on her own. So as soon as class is over, I head straight to her house.
I’ve only been there once, when she paid me back for the dress, but I still remember exactly where it is.
I try calling her a few times to let her know I’m on my way, but she doesn’t answer. She doesn’t call back either.
It’s only normal to start worrying in a situation like this, right?
The news is full of stories about people doing something drastic after being publicly humiliated, and I don’t even want to think that Kimberly might’ve done the same.
If anything happened to Kimberly... I swear I’d burn that fucking church to the ground with everyone still inside!
I finally make it to her apartment building and keep pressing the buzzer.
No answer.
Shit... now I’m really starting to worry.
A few seconds later, I start ringing it again, over and over.
I let out a sigh of relief when the front door unlocks with a buzz... but it doesn’t last long.
Kimberly wasn’t the one who opened it. It was just another tenant heading out.
Now the anxiety is really starting to twist my stomach.
I slip inside before the door closes and sprint up the stairs, reaching her apartment in no time.
Why am I even doing all this? Good question...
I don’t even buy my own excuse anymore that this is just some personal challenge. If that were really true, I wouldn’t be this worried about her.
I always thought she was the one who had a crush on me, but... fuck, what if it’s actually the other way around?
No... come on. That’d be crazy. I think...
I pound on the front door.
Knock! Knock!
Once. Twice. Three times — I keep knocking until I hear the soft sound of bare footsteps stopping right behind the door.
Then comes the click of a key turning in the lock, and finally the door opens just a crack, enough for Kimberly to peek out.
Seeing her alive, and knowing she didn’t do anything desperate, takes a huge weight off my shoulders.
Still, saying she’s okay would be a huge understatement.
Then Kimberly opens the door all the way. She’s wearing nothing but a pair of tight shorts and a white tank top that shows off her huge breasts.
Normally, a sight like that would get me hard instantly. But right now I barely even notice it, completely overshadowed by the sadness written all over her face.
"...Come in, Axel. To be honest, I’m really not in the mood to go out or have fun today, as you can probably imagine. Actually, I don’t even feel like seeing anyone. But I can’t exactly turn you away after you came all the way here just to check on me."
I follow her inside, and once again we end up in her bedroom—the one that looks more like a national library than a place to sleep.
Judging by the thick book still lying open on the bed, I must’ve interrupted her in the middle of some serious reading.
Kimberly seems like the kind of person who buries herself in novels to escape the mess of the real world.
But when I take a closer look, I realize it isn’t a fantasy novel at all. It’s the Liber Luminis, the holy book of the followers of the God of Light.
The moment I see it, one question pops into my head.
"Kimberly... I don’t mean to pry, but why the hell are you still wasting your time on that? Yesterday you saw with your own eyes how cruel the earthly representatives of the God you worship can be."
Kimberly doesn’t answer right away. With slow, listless movements, she closes the Liber Luminis and carefully places it back on the shelf. Then she sits on the bed and pats the mattress beside her, clearly inviting me to sit next to her. I don’t need to be told twice.
"God is God. People are people," she says softly. "It’d be stupid to blame the God of Light for someone else’s sins, wouldn’t it? Besides, what happened during the fashion show, or everything people said on TV, in the newspapers, and at school... that’s not what’s really hurting me. Sure, it hurt at the time, but thanks to my mom and dad, who stayed by my side until dawn after you walked me home, I realized I have nothing to be ashamed of. My conscience is clear, and the words of one old extremist won’t change who I am."
"So if that’s not it... then what’s bothering you?"
"It’s funny you never asked me about what that old priest said," she says, a faint smile curling her lips. "About how much I talked about you."
"I was pretty worked up at the time, so I wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying. But now that you mention it... I’m curious. What could you have possibly told him to make him that angry?"
"I told him a lot about you. I told him you’re kind, caring, and brave. That you didn’t hesitate for even a second to stand up to two terrifying thugs to protect me. But that’s not all. You also gave me the courage to do something I never would’ve dared to do. If it weren’t for you, I don’t think I ever would’ve stepped onto that runway. And even though the evening ended in disaster, I’m proud that I found the courage to fight my shyness and insecurities. It was all thanks to you, Axel. I told him a lot of other things too. And, as you can probably guess, I had nothing but good things to say about you. So much so that one of my former friends from church pointed out that my eyes lit up every time I talked about you. And that’s terribly wrong..."
"What’s so wrong about saying nice things about me?"
"It’s not really about saying nice things about you as Axel Lustsilk... It’s about saying them about a vampire."
